What is Our New Cross?

An opportunity for community members to come together to protect and

improve the area through projects, events and developing a

Neighbourhood Plan

Page 3: Our newcross assemblypresentation

What is a Neighbourhood

Plan?

• Introduced under the Localism Act 2011

• Gives new rights to allow local communities to shape new

developments in their area

• Land use policies developed by the community relating to the area

within a given boundary

• Adopted after approval in a community referendum

Page 4: Our newcross assemblypresentation

When was Our New Cross

started and by whom?

• Two neighbours living in Amersham Road instigated the idea in early

February 2014

• Since then a large number of local residents, employees and

volunteers have become involved to varying degrees

Page 5: Our newcross assemblypresentation

Why?

• The pace of change in New Cross is starting to increase, with both

positive and negative impacts for the community

• The Mayor has made the area part of the Lewisham, Catford and

New Cross Opportunity Area with over 8,000 new homes expected

• Lewisham Council’s Core Strategy proposes 2,300 new homes

across Deptford and New Cross

• Lewisham Council policy states that land previously allocated for

employment uses will now be used for housing to meet these targets

• Producing a Neighbourhood Plan is one way to guide this investment

towards a community-led vision of New Cross

Page 6: Our newcross assemblypresentation

What has happened so far?

• 4 Neighbourhood Forum meetings with between 25 – 65 attendees

• 3-hour workshop on early ideas for constitution and engagement

• Establishment of 7 working groups on various aspects of

Neighbourhood Plan

• Talk and discussion on community-led housing models

• Expression of interest for TfL’s Future Streets Incubator Fund

Page 7: Our newcross assemblypresentation

Who can get involved?

• Anyone living, working, volunteering, studying, shopping or travelling

in New Cross, or who simply cares about the area, is welcome to join

our Forum meetings and get involved with our Working Groups

• Involvement can mean anything from attending one meeting to

committing to a long-term involvement in writing the Plan

• It is not necessary to live within the boundary to get involved in this

way

• HOWEVER only those living within the approved boundary will be

able to vote in the Referendum on the Neighbourhood Plan
