the Conservancy provided environmental education to over 45,000

individuals in 2008, with more than 20,000 visitors to the Conservancy nature Center. our education team

expanded their dynamic partnership with the Collier County public school

system to offer a variety of educational opportunities to middle and elementary

our vision

our Mission

We envision a Southwest Florida where our land, water and wildlife are protected, our citizens are engaged and our leaders make decisions with the health, well-being and sustainability of our region in mind. We seek to increase our knowledge of the natural world through continued scientific research and to increase our impact through collaboration with our partners. We work to protect a high quality of life for both our current residents and generations to come.

To protect Southwest Florida’s unique natural environment and quality of life ... now and forever.

the mangrove shoreline is the principal developmental habitat for game fish in southern florida. But large portions of this vital habitat have been destroyed

or altered by coastal development. the Conservancy of southwest

florida has been involved with the study and tagging of over 5,000

mangrove trees to help understand why mangroves are disappearing .

i am pleased to bring you our 2007-2008 annual report. it is just one example of the immense public support of our work. As you peruse the list of donors, I hope you will be as impressed as I am by the broad and diverse base this organization enjoys. We are beholden to no one other than you, the members. We are nobody’s group but yours.Your support has allowed us to tackle the thorny issues of water quality, land use planning, and preservation of natural resources. Seldom has that challenge been greater than in the past year. Much of our environmental science, education and wildlife rehabilitation work is highlighted throughout this report.Public policy activities often grab the headlines, and some of these were difficult. One would think with the downturn in the economy that development pressure would at least ease if not go away completely. But that has not been the case. The Department of Community Affairs in Tallahassee, the agency that oversees growth management, has been inundated with development proposals. Over 500,000 acres of new entitlements are pending. Whether these proposals are being fueled by a fear of future regulation or a desire to get out in front of the next Florida boom is unclear. But for the Conservancy it has meant expanding our presence in the policy arena. The challenges have included:

Preventing private beach clubs, public docks, boardwalks, public •shuttles, and other inappropriate development on Keewaydin Island.Putting limits on future development in far northeastern Collier •County. According to the Collier County Planning Commission, some developer-driven proposals would have allowed 400,000 people to live east of Golden Gate Estates. Creating policies that protect the amount of water we have and •improve its purity. During this past winter our rainfall was only slightly ahead of Death Valley. We need to ensure that we are not continually putting more and more pressure on limited drinking water supplies.

For these reasons I hope you will continue to support the work of the Conservancy. You have been our friends through good and bad. In 2009 we turn 45 years old. With your continued support we can continue for another 45 years, keeping Southwest Florida a unique part of America, and not the kind of burger-this and taco-that urban sprawl so common in other parts of Florida.

as i come to the end of my term as board chairman, i know that our supporters are more committed than ever to protecting our future and quality of life.On January 13, 2008, the Conservancy launched the “Saving Southwest Florida: Campaign for the Conservancy.” At the time of the announcement, we had already raised 80% of our $25 million goal. Since then, we have raised additional philanthropic support and, in response to critical unmet needs, have raised the goal to $33 million. More than $27 million has been raised to date. The Campaign is not only about numbers. It’s an indication of the commitment of supporters and friends to protecting our quality of life. Not only has the Conservancy received its largest gift in its 45 year history, it has received a record number of $1 million gifts. I am confident that we will achieve the goal for the Campaign, which will strengthen our efforts to protect our region’s water, wildlife, land and our future. While the Campaign has been a tremendous success, we must not lose sight of the importance of maintaining our funding for day to day operations which total more than $4 million annually. Each day and each month the pressures on our environment continue to escalate, and our talented and imaginative staff are eager to meet the challenges before them. The Conservancy has a critical need for continued and enhanced support to its annual fund. Many opportunities exist on how you can support the daily work of the Conservancy. Renew or upgrade your membership. Urge others to join. Continue your contributions to the Sea Turtle and Wildlife Rehabilitation funds. Attend special events and invite your friends to participate as well. By supporting the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, we protect the paradise we love and leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy. While I end my term as board chairman, I am more committed than ever to promote the mission and support more of the work of the Conservancy, one of the most effective environmental organizations in the United States. Your funds go toward protecting one of the greatest remaining natural treasures in our country for future generations --- the Western Everglades.

rehabilitation Clinic (wrC) team released a bald eagle back into the wild at Mediterra in north naples in June. the eagle had spent

the prior five months recovering from a broken left wing. “it was one of those success stories

we weren’t sure would happen,” according to Joanna fitzgerald-vaught, wrC director. the wrC treats over 2,400 injured, sick and orphaned wildlife and successfully releases

about half of them back into the wild. conservancy.org/wrc

capital campaignsavinG southwest florida:the Conservancy announced a $25 million capital campaign goal on January 13, 2008 and at the same time announced that over $20 million had been raised to date. over 200 guests attended the special announcement celebration at the Conservancy nature Center. nine leadership gifts of one million dollars or more had been contributed to the campaign by the time of the announcement. the Conservancy Capital Campaign has four major goals:

Conserve Our Natural Resources by expanding advocacy, 1. research, native wildlife protection and education programs.Build a Strong Endowment and ensure that the staff and 2. resources needed are available to sustain the work of the Conservancy.Create a World-Class Nature Center, a 21-acre oasis and focal 3. point of conservation and sustainability.Create a Gateway to the Conservancy & Gordon River Greenway. 4. discovery Center“The Conservancy is in major need of rebuilding and we believe that supporting a new Discovery Center is extremely important to teach and involve newcomers in the Conservancy mission and help develop the next generation of conservationists.”- Sue & Bill Dalton

Conservation hall“We are all very fortunate to live in Southwest Florida and it is our respon-sibility to support the Conservancy in its effort to preserve the gifts of na-ture: clean and abundant water being one of the most important.”-Bob & Connie Eaton

environmental planning Center “It seems very appropriate to be funding one of the first green public buildings in our own community. The Environmental Planning Center

is a big step for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and I am pleased and proud to be part of this critical effort to move toward sustainable building.” - Geri Martin, The Martin Foundation, Inc.

learning laboratory “I wanted to give the Conservancy a boost as it moves forward with this important campaign. If people who move to Southwest Florida’s paradise don’t protect the area, they will lose it.”- Nancy Seeley, Leadership gift from the Leonard C. and Mildred F. Ferguson Foundation

Conservation policy “Being second generation supporters of the Conservancy provides a lot of long term perspective for us. Though the Conservancy has grown in size, the breadth and depth of the issues it tackles are increasing at an even faster pace. Our leadership gift to the campaign is directed at strengthening the immediate and long term needs for policy and science-based advocacy. We believe strongly in the Conservancy’s talented and tenacious staff and its proven ability to get the job done.”- Lynne and Chip Shotwell

Gateway to the Conservancy & Gordon river Greenway“As new residents and long time visitors of Naples we felt obliged to get involved in the community. It didn’t take long to realize what the Conservancy is doing to protect Southwest Florida’s unique beauty, resources and inhabitants. We are pleased to support this vital organization. Our hope is that a new entrance to the Conservancy will help bring more awareness to the organization and its tireless efforts.” - Jeannie and Christopher B. Smith

wildlife rehabilitation Clinic“The Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic has an important dual role in caring for and rehabilitating injured wildlife, but also introducing more people to the Conservancy than any other program. We chose to make a leadership gift to build the new Clinic with the hope that it will enable the Conservancy to expand and enhance its work.”- Dolph and Sharon von Arx

the Blair leGaCythe Conservancy gratefully acknowledges the lifetime

contributions of the late Mrs. dorothy r. Blair to

the cause of conservation, including her decision early

in the campaign to assist the Conservancy in purchasing

the 8 acre fleischmann property. this property acquisition was vital in

allowing us to link Goodlette frank road to our revitalized

campus and help create a significant new preserve in

the heart of naples.

CRITTER CAREour wildlife clinic admitted nearly 2,500 injured animals, a record. Most of

these had been hit by cars, tangled in fishing gear, or attacked by dogs and cats. to address these problems we have partnered with public and private

organizations to encourage greater awareness of human impacts on wildlife; we hope to prevent more injuries in the future.

DISAPPEARING WILD PLACESCollier County’s “rural lands stewardship area” (rlsa) was initially hailed as a landmark plan to protect eastern Collier County rural lands. the intention was to limit urban sprawl in rural areas and offer incentives for landowners to direct development to less environmentally-sensitive lands. while the Conservancy supports the rlsa concept of balancing growth, conservation and agriculture, the Conservancy has been actively involved in proposing key improvements in the original plan. this work will continue for the next several years as developers and others push for additional land credits and increased development. SUSTAINABLE GROWTHin lee County, density reduction/Groundwater resource area (dr/Gr) is critical to replenishing our underground water supplies. the Conservancy policy team worked with the lee County Commissioners and advocated for science-based review of these lands and additional hydrologic studies to direct development to less environmentally-sensitive areas. the Commission has incorporated many of these recommendations into their growth planning.Sign up for e-alerts and to take action at conservancy.org

despite a lack of peer-reviewed science, the u.s. environmental protection agency (epa) and the florida department of environmental protection (fdep) have adopted

a controversial policy that allows developers to increase their water pollution and destroy more wetlands. Known as the harper Methodology, it inaccurately presumes

that natural wetlands are a significant source of pollution, which fundamentally creates incentives to destroy wetlands for development. the Conservancy continues to

pursue actions to prevent the adoption of the methodology before vital wetlands, and our water supplies, are destroyed.

sea turtle protection

the Conservancy has been monitoring sea turtle nests on Keewaydin island,

a barrier island located off the coast of naples, for 27 years. research data

gathered by Conservancy staff includes nesting sites, frequency of nesting,

measurements of nesting sea turtles and egg and hatchling numbers. during the

2008 sea turtle season, Conservancy staff and volunteers counted 233 nests,

which was an increase from 150 in 2007. approximately 10,000 hatchlings from

100 nests made it off the beach into the Gulf of Mexico prior to the extreme storms

of 2008.

41ConservanCy of southwest florida

It is estimated that only one in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings

reaches adulthood. The few that survive can live 70 years or more.
