2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
Principal’s Message:
During this time of Thanksgiving and remembering all of the comforts, bounty
and blessings that God has given us, may we always call to mind those who are
suffering, marginalized, forgotten. Pope Francis once stated that “Jesus does not
come to call the righteous, but the sinners.” We are called to a higher purpose in
leaving behind actions which are self-serving and helping those in need. At Our
Lady of Wisdom CS, in full recognition of the Ontario Catholic Graduate
Expectations and a renewed sense of belonging, during this initial phase of our
pastoral plan: Rooted in Christ: We Belong, we applaud the already evolving
efforts of staff, students, and their families in helping those in need, as
evidenced during our Terry Fox Run 2018-2019, our ongoing Fall Food Drive,
fundraisers, and the directions set by our Eco Club, We Team, Student Council,
and Peer Mediators. The school year holds much promise, and we look forward
to reaching our goals which are inspired by Jesus’ example.
Please remember to walk your children on to the school grounds, especially if
they must cross the street in the interest of safety. We look forward to catching
up with all of you during our Curriculum Night, as well as, journeying together
and learning how best to support our students in French Immersion. Wishing
everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless!
Sincerely, W. Kwon Principal

OCTOBER 2018
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
Safe School Arrivals for 2018-2019:
Please leave a message by calling the school at 416-393-5273 when your child will be absent or late. Please make sure
that all students who arrive late check in at the front office to receive a late slip.
STUDENT INFORMATION:
Please ensure that all information regarding your child is up-to-date. We need to have the CORRECT HOME
TELEPHONE, CELL NUMBERS, WORK NUMBERS, HOME ADDRESS AND EMERGENCY CONTACT. If these
numbers change, please let the school know promptly, IN WRITING and/or by contacting the school secretary, Ms.
Pagnello.
LUNCH ROUTINES:
Students who remain at school for lunch (11:45-12:45) may NOT LEAVE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS anytime during the
lunch hour. For safety reasons, children are not permitted to leave the school property for lunch, unless they are expressly
supervised by parent(s)/guardian(s).
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL:
A reminder that “ALL” visitors must enter the school building through the front doors by using the video monitoring
system and sign in at the main office. Entrance through the school yard doors or other entrances and exits, i.e. the
Kindergarten wing is strictly PROHIBITED. In the interest of safety for all students and to ensure that classes are
uninterrupted, we need everyone's total co-operation and understanding on this matter. If an item is being dropped off for
your child or pick up is required for an appointment, please come by the office. We will contact the class directly.
If you need to speak with your child’s teacher or the principal, kindly call and make an appointment. We are glad to meet
with you at a mutually convenient time.
APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE POLICY:
All students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately and in a manner that reflects the aims and atmosphere of
a Catholic school. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has adopted a BLUE AND WHITE DRESS CODE.
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
APPROPRIATE DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS
For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop off your children in the appropriate sections of the school
yard and leave them with our staff. This will help the students develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe
school yard. The bell rings at 9 a.m. Please ensure that your child is dropped off no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Parents
should be aware that the supervision of the children remains their responsibility before and after school. Kindly
note: There is NO SUPERVISION in the school yard before 8:30 a.m. and after 3:45 p.m. Supervision in our school
yard begins at 8:30 a.m.
CELL PHONES:
The school understands the need for some students, specifically in the older junior and intermediate grades to bring a
cellphone device to school, as some students may have alternative methods of getting to school, i.e., by public transit, school
bus, walking, etc…. This being the case, we do understand and respect that students may need to communicate with their
parents upon arrival at school and after dismissal. However, the use of cell phones is NOT permitted throughout the school
day, and the expectation is that cellphones are put on silent mode and stowed away, out of sight. If a student needs to make
a phone call, they may ask a trusted adult staff member to use the phones in the main office. Thank you for your assistance
in this matter.
Standardized School Hours for 2018-2019:

STUDENT LEADERSHIP: WE DAY 2018
“WE is a movement that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world.
Get involved with your family, school, company or as an individual. WE makes doing good,
doable.”
Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School’s WE team of nine students had an inspirational,
educational, and fun time at this year’s WE Day conference at Scotiabank Arena. This year’s
members consist of Own Sexton, Jayden Connors, Emil Tawil, Savannah Stonehouse, Kamea
McKennon, Elizabeth Magboo, Mackenzie Silva, Cherese Torcato, and Danika Wong. These
students will be working alongside Mme. Ongpin to plan events that encourage awareness and
action towards social justice. Students in our school community are going to “Scare Hunger”
for the month of October. We will hold a food drive to contribute to our local community, and
to raise awareness of the root causes of hunger.

Congratulations to all of our newly elected student council representatives, a truly diverse unit
from our junior grades to our intermediate grades.

ECO CLUB:
Mlle. Falsetti and our ECO Club are ready to implement their vision of responsible stewardship
for environmentally responsible practices for 2018-2019. This year’s club is comprised of:
Milan
Azailia
Paige
Milan
Danika
Jessica
Here are some of the eco-friendly, green ideas that the Eco Club would like to explore:
1. Ensure that we use the garbage/recycling/green bin properly. They would like to ensure that
each class has a poster that explains what goes where. They would like to have an assembly that
will teach and engage the audience on this topic.
2. Collect used pens/markers/highlighters and drop them off at Staples.
3. Litterless lunch and a letter to the parent community informing them of how they can help
their children.
4. Planting of greenery around the school and beautifying the front of the school grounds.
5. Work on Eco school designation.
6. Remind all of the student body that the TCDSB bans water bottles and encourage the use of
reusable bottles.

ATHLETICS UPDATE:
On Thursday, September 27, the Wisdom Warriors kicked off the 2018-2019 athletic season with an Ultimate
Tournament at St. Kevin's. The Warriors played with admirable heart and sportsmanship, finishing in second
place (behind host St. Kevin's) with an overall record of 3 Wins and 3 Losses at the end of the day.
Starting last year in June, students from grades 5 through 8 had been learning the sport for the first time with
Mr. Chen. 18 students in particular developed both passion and skill for the game and were selected for the
team. The team was led by captains Eleazar Reyes, Maria Yiannacouros, and Caleb Bwamiki, who all
demonstrated exceptional leadership in addition to their athletic abilities. Eleazar in particular played a key role
in recruiting and advocating for the sport amongst his peers.
Mr. Chen would like to recognize Grade 6 students Caleb Bwamiki and Elizabeth Magboo, this year's first
recipients of the Wisdom Warriors Athlete of the Month award. Both athletes were instrumental to the
Warriors' success, completing some jaw-dropping as well as playing lockdown defense.
The sport has grown quickly in the OLW community, with many younger students excited to try the sport after
seeing Intermediate students practicing during recess. Given that a large portion of this year's squad was
comprised of Grade 6 students, OLW is looking forward to next year's tournament with a handful of veterans
ready to compete.

TRAFFIC PROTOCOL
To start off the school year with all students’ safety at the forefront, we need to ask for your increased vigilance with all of
our surrounding roads. We ask for your additional attention to the safety of our students, specifically in the areas in front
of our school. We need everyone’s help to work for the safety of all our children.
We have an ongoing concern with traffic congestion in front of the school during student drop-off and pick-up times. The
disorderly flow of traffic can jeopardize the safety of students and all pedestrians.
PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR CHILDREN:
1. During morning and afternoon peak times, follow the directions on the map illustrated below for approaching and
leaving the school area;
Use White Abbey Park to approach Japonica Rd.
Use Crosland Drive to leave the area.
Use the loop/cul-de-sac on White Abbey Park and wait in any of the spots where parking is allowed (maximum 30
Minutes). Use these roads in the direction indicated on the map.
2. The area in front of the main door of the school cannot be used as a drop-off OR a pick-up area. It is a school bus
loading zone! Please observe the Bus zone signs from pole to pole. There are two signs which indicate the exact
area of the bus loading zone!
3. The staff parking lot is NOT to be used to drop off or pick-up our child(ren).
4. Do not stop on the south side of Japonica Rd. It is a no stopping zone.
It is unsafe for our children to run across the road.
5. The newly paved passage way to the west of the school near the new addition is an emergency Fire Access route. Pick
up and drop off and Parking are strictly forbidden and any cars in the area will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s
expense. Parents can access the kindergarten area at the north end from the main school grounds in order to drop off and
pick up their children.
Have a meeting place a short walking distance away, established in advance so your child knows where to look for you.
Please, do not double park, block residents’ driveways OR park in the staff parking lot before school or after
school. NB: Please be advised that there is AMPLE PARKING on Crosland Dr. and Alice Crescent.
As members of the Our Lady of Wisdom community, please feel free to report dangerous situations directly to the Toronto Police services using the
following link, as this allows for the issue to be dealt with legally. https://www.torontopolice.on.ca/core/driving_complaint.php

Kids and Flu
The flu germs spread when people cough, sneeze or talk. The flu germs can also live on surfaces like
toys, countertops, and door handles for up to eight hours.
Students can pass the flu germs to each other, to school staff and to family members before they show
symptoms. Children under five, seniors and people in poor health are at greater risk of complications from flu.
Vaccination is the best protection against flu. It takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective so get it
early.
Tips on staying healthy this flu Season:
1. Get your flu shot early 2. Wash your hands often 3. Avoid touching face and eyes 4. Cover your cough or sneeze 5. Do not share drinking cups and utensils 6. Disinfect common surfaces like door handles, hand railings, keyboards, cell phones and tablets.

OLW CSPC Corner
Welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year! It is great to see our OLW families again as well as to meet and
welcome families new to our school.
Our World’s Finest Chocolates fundraiser is off to a fantastic start. Many thanks to the parents and students who are
taking the time and effort to make this fundraiser a success. There are exciting prizes to be won! A friendly reminder
all monies are to be returned to the school by October 19th. Students who bring the chocolate money back to school
promptly will be entered in draws for some fun prizes.
With Thanksgiving approaching we reflect on all we are thankful for. Our students, teachers, school administration,
parents, neighbours and our churches make up the community where our children can grow in a loving and nurturing
environment. We are thankful for our school community and we are blessed. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Please consider those families in need during this time of giving thanks. Please send a non-perishable food item to
school with your child or bring one on Curriculum night. Baskets are located near the office.
Halloween is a great opportunity for family fun and togetherness. It is wonderful to see the creativity the students (and
parents!!!) put into their costumes and celebrations. Have fun but please keep safety at the forefront of your minds.
Here are some Halloween safety tips:
TRICK OR TREAT SAFETY
Have your child carry a flashlight.
NEVER go into a stranger’s house.
Trick or treat with people you know.
Children should always stay in groups if no parent is present.
Younger children should ALWAYS be accompanied by an older person.
Accompany your child when trick or treating.
If you are unable to accompany your child, then know the route your child will take.
Remind children of road safety rules. Cross only at corners. Go up one side of the road and
down the other side. Never cross between parked cars. Walk facing on-coming traffic if
there is no sidewalk.
If adults are driving their children, drive slowly, with lights on and cautious when pulling to
the side of the road.
Children should NEVER eat any treats until parents have had a chance to go through them
and inspect them. Parents should look for tampering of packages and discard any they
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
believe to be unsafe.
Remind children that not everyone celebrates Halloween, and to avoid any homes that have
no lights on. Also remind children not to run through yards or gardens.
With older children, be sure to know what other events (such as parties) they plan on
attending.
Set time limits when children should return home.
Our next CSPC meeting will be held on October 17th at 6:30pm in the school library. All are welcome to
attend.
Thank you for your support!

Guidance Corner – October
In the month of October, we celebrate the virtue of gratitude. Gratitude is one of many
positive emotions. It is about focusing on what is good in our lives and being
thankful for the things we have. Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate the
things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water,
friends, family, even computer access. Check out the link below for some gratitude
activities that you can do as a family.

High School
The TCDSB has decided that this year, high school applications will be completed on paper and not online. High school
applications will be sent home at the end of October. The After 8 Booklets and Transition Guide for Parents will also be
sent home to assist in completing applications. Open houses will be taking place this month. Parents/Guardians are
encouraged to attend more than one open house to explore what opportunities are available. It is highly recommended
that grade 7 students also attend the open houses to get an idea of what
school may interest them for the near future. The open house dates are
available at the link below:

to determine whether parents wish to continue or initiate an International Languages (Elementary) program at their
child’s school.
Surveys will be sent home with the progress report the week of November 12th, with the only or oldest child in each
family. Families are asked to complete one survey per family and submit it to the school principal by November 27,

RAIL SAFETY WEEK
A Special thank you is owed to Constables DiBiase and Constable Silvestre, Community
Services and Social Media police unit for CN and CP Rail for educating our student community
on the dangers of the various track systems in North America. Students learned about the perils
of multi-track systems, the present dangers of the train overhang, how to check their blind spots.
We thank these officers for adding to students’ knowledge on a topic that has at times been
underemphasized all in the name of student safety!

UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS FOR STUDENTS:
Covenant House:
Both Mrs. Robertson and Mme. Ongpin’s Grade 6 classes will be participating in a series of workshops which
address Youth Homelessness Awareness and Prevention on October 26, 2018, entitled “Before you Run.” We
welcome Mr. Newnham to the OLW community, and it is our hope that students gain additional insight into the
sub-topics of mental health, self-harm, suicide, substance use, bullying and online safety as a result of taking
part in these presentations.
Junior Achievement:
Once again, our intermediate students will be taking part in the Economics for Success program thanks to the generosity

OLW HEALTHY SNACK PROGRAM
In conjunction with the non-profit Angel Foundation at the TCDSB, please continue to support Our Lady of Wisdom
Catholic School’s universal nutrition and healthy snack program. The program will continue for the academic year, 2018-
2019 and has as its aim the provision of healthy snacks for all students which adhere to Canada’s Food Guide and
incorporate 3 food groups. The program is a non-profit initiative which is monitored by Toronto Public Health.
Snacks will be delivered to classrooms daily. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please direct them to
Mrs. Shirley who is the nutrition program coordinator. Again, we would like to emphasize that the administration and the
program coordinator are well aware of allergies that students have and will take appropriate measures to ensure that the
program reflects these needs.
We ask that in order to sustain the program and keep it running efficiently that the parent community contributes a modest
donation of $10 or more to contribute towards the program. For donations of $20 or more, donor tax receipts will be made
directly by the Angel Foundation for Learning. Thank you for your generosity. The well-being of our students is always
our top priority. We are confident that the program will serve the nutritional needs of our diverse student population well,
and the program will take into account the health and safety of all.
ANAPHYLAXIS ALERT
Our Lady of Wisdom is an allergen aware school. There are students in attendance who suffer from severe and
life threatening allergies to certain foods such as peanuts, tree nut products, sesame seeds, eggs, seafood and
shell fish. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction.
Accordingly, please DO NOT bring in snacks/treats/cake to acknowledge/celebrate a child’s birthday. A
safe practice that the school encourages is the distribution of non-edible birthday themed treats, such as,
pencils, erasers, stickers, etc… A reminder to parents that administration, teachers and support staff of the
TCDSB are NOT permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we
have written signed authorization signed by you the parents and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense
any medication may be updated on a regular basis and are available from the principal. Please send back the forms
for the administration of medication as soon as possible. Please be advised that staff will NOT dispense non-
prescription medication to students. Should you require additional information or have any questions about this
protocol please contact the school principal. We kindly ask that parents refrain from sending foods containing
nuts to the school. Please do not send edible treats in for birthdays, a small token (pencils, or stickers) would
suffice.
IMPORTANT: If your child requires an EPI-PEN for anaphylactic emergencies THEY MUST WEAR one on
them AT ALL TIMES. Please supply an additional EPI-PEN for safe keeping in the office. We also
STRONGLY recommend ensuring that your child wear a medical alert bracelet to indicate ALL allergy or other
serious medical conditions they may have. The Office Requires an updated photo of your child, as well as, a
current signed consent form for the administration of oral and/or injection medication. These forms are
available in the main office. Please speak with the secretary or principal.

CANADA 150- CITY OF TORONTO LEGACY TREE PLANTING AT OUR LADY OF WISDOM
CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Celia Johnstone, Master of Forest Conservation and Tree Canada Community Adviser has
shared some fantastic news with the school, just prior to the end of the 2018-2019 academic
year. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has been selected to participate in the Canada
150-City of Toronto Legacy Tree Planting project. OLW will be receiving a commemorative
sugar maple tree this fall, along with a distinct commemorative plaque. The school is
extremely honoured and excited to receive this gift of nature, which I’ve been told will
provide a massive canopy, natural shade, enhance existing ecosystems and serve as a symbol
of beauty for many years to come. The school is in the midst of preparing for this Legacy
event which is tentatively set for late fall towards the end of November. This tree planting
celebration will include students and staff of the school, members of the local community
including trustees and members of city council and the local media. Students will give a
short presentation, which may consist of verbal or visual pieces on the environmental, social
and economic benefits of trees, or a piece on Canada’s 150 year history or another relevant

MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK: (HTTPS://WWW.YOUCUBED.ORG/TASKS/BROKEN-EGGS/
Broken Eggs
An old woman goes to market and a horse steps on her basket and crushes the eggs. The rider offers to pay for the
damages and asks her how many eggs she had brought. She does not remember the exact number, but when she had taken
them out two at a time, there was one egg left. The same happened when she picked them out three, four, five, and six at a
time, but when she took them seven at a time they came out even. What is the smallest number of eggs she could have
had?

FALL FOOD DRIVE
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the month of October is often a time when we think of our most
vulnerable community members and feel the call to spring into action and donate much needed alms. Thank you
to all of the staff, students and their families for their generous donations of non-perishable food items, which
will definitely go to a beneficial use for those families who are without. Gratitude is a virtue that permeates our
lives, and we are confident that at Our Lady of Wisdom CS students understand the importance of helping
those people in need.

International Languages (Elementary) Program Update: October, 2018
International Languages Parent Survey
On July 12th, the Board of Trustees of the TCDSB approved a motion to survey parents in all TCDSB elementary schools to
determine whether parents wish to continue or initiate an International Languages (Elementary) program at their child’s
school.
Surveys will be sent home with the progress report the week of November 12th, with the only or oldest child in each
family. Families are asked to complete one survey per family and submit it to the school principal by November 27,
2018.
Should parents wish to have a translated version to assist with the completion of the English survey, they are asked to
request a copy from the school principal or a special web page will be set up with translated versions of the survey.
Translations will be available in the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Arabic, Filipino, Chinese
(Simplified and Traditional) Tamil, and Italian.
To ensure that results reflect the school community, surveys will be coded to ensure reliability, as well as, surveys from
67% of all families in the school must be completed and returned in order for the results to be considered viable. In the
current schools that offer International Languages within the five hour school day, in order to determine if the program is
to be continued using the Board approved model, or to move the IL program to an alternative model, the majority of 51%
should be attained for the preferred selection.
For updated information regarding the International Languages Program please visit:
