Today’sreadingistheculminationofathemethatMarkhasbeenweavingintohisGospel.TowardstheendofChapter4ofMark’sGospelwereadhowJesuscalmedthestormwhenthediscipleswereterrifiedthattheirboatwouldsink.Attheconclusionofthatstory,wearetoldthatthediscipleskeptsayingtooneanother:“Whocanthisbe,thatthewindandseaobeyhim?”(Mark4,41).So,we have two examples of family members and the people of NazarethdismissingJesusasanobodyorassomeonewhohasgonecrazy.Infact,theyeffectively say to one another: “Who does this carpenter, whom we haveknownsincehewasakid,thinkheis?Whomishetryingtoimpress?”Atthesame time, his disciples are seriously trying to come to terms with who hereallyis.Meanwhile,Jesusisclearlysayingthathe’ssomeoneonamissiontowakeuptheworldtothemercy,compassionandkindnessofGod:“WhoeverdoesthewillofGodisbrotherandsisterandmothertome.”
TheordinarypeopleofNazarethandmembersofJesus’extendedfamilywereconvinced that they understoodwho Jesus reallywas. They took offence athim because they concluded that he was full of his own importance. Theyfailed to recognise that in theperson theyhad seen growupGodwas reallypresent.Familiaritydoesindeedbreedcontempt,over-familiaritycanblindustothepresenceofGodinourverymidst.
WhileweourselveshavenodesiretoreduceJesustothelevelofsomeoneouttomakeanameforhimselforasthekidfromdownthestreettryingtomakean impression, there are probably times when we are unable to see Jesuspresentintheordinaryandnot-so-ordinarypeopleweencountereverydayofourlives.
Whiletoday’sgospelgivesusanexcellentexampleof how we can all unfairly read faults andlimitationsintoothers,today’ssecondreadingfromCorinthians is an invitation to look at our ownlimitations.Inreallife,weareconstantlystrugglingwith the call to confront our own faults and
limitationsandtheinclinationtomagnifythelimitationsandfaultswewanttoseeinothers.Pauladmitstobeingafflictedwith“athornintheflesh”tostophimfrombecominguppityabouthisspiritualgrowth.Isuggestthatthekeytounderstandinghimliesinhisdisclosurethathetookhisweaknesstohisprayeranddidnotpretend toGod thathewasanythingother thanweak. Indoingthat,hecametoappreciatethatGodlovedhimsomuchthathedidnothavetoearnGod’sapprovalbylivingandactingflawlessly.

SacramentofPenanceThis year Our Lady of LourdesCommunity is offering theSacrament of Penance and theSacrament of First Eucharist to
thosewhoareeligible.
The Sacrament of Penance will be celebrated in theafternoon of Monday September 10th and TuesdaySeptember11th.
TheSacramentofFirstEucharistwillbecelebratedontheweekendof24th/25thNovember.

The Parent Meeting for 1st Penance will be held onMonday30th July at 7.30pm in theOLOLSchoolLearningCentre.Thismeeting isessential ifyouwishyourchildtoparticipateinthisSacramentalProgramin2018.
If your child is8 yearsof age, (Year3 orabove)andhasbeen baptised he/shewould be verywelcome to receivethe Sacrament of Penance followed by First Eucharist in2018.TheChurchrequiresthatyoumusthavereceivedtheSacrament of Penance before you can receive theSacramentof First Eucharist. Youare therefore invited topresent your child for these two Sacraments through theParishProgramatOurLadyofLourdes.
