From the Pastor: Christmas is such a mercy!
Here’s how Chiara Lubich puts it:
Christmas, feast of the birth of Jesus, is for me the reply
of God and the Church to a need of the soul: to hear repeated to me every year, through the commemoration of that fact so sweet, so sublime,
so simple and so deep, that God loves me.
Yes, if in my existence, I am able to fulfill my deepest
aspirations,
it is only because God has looked also upon me, as he has upon every-one, and has become man to give me
the laws of life that, like light on the road, help me walk safely
towards our common destiny.
But Christmas for me is not just a commemoration,
however meaningful. It is a spur
for me to work to restore the presence of Christ in the midst of the society in which I live.
He is there where two or more are united in his name(Mt 18:20), like an everyday spiritual Christmas,
in homes, in factories, in schools, in public buildings…
This day of Christmas, furthermore, opens my heart to
the whole of humanity.
Its warmth goes beyond the Christian world and it seems to invade every land, a sign that that Baby came for everyone. In fact it is his plan: that all may be one (Jn 17:21) And every Christmas then I al-ways ask myself: ‘How many more Christmases will I see in my life?’
This question, which has no answer, helps me to live every year as if it were the last with a greater awareness of my own Christmas day, the die natalis, the day which will signal for me the beginning of the life that never dies.
Merry Christmas! Thanks be to God. Christmas and East-er are the greatest Thanksgiving Days of all!
With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

CHRISTMAS LETTER FROM FR. FRANCIS
My dear Brothers and Sisters:
I begin with a personal and heartfelt wish for each
of you for a joy filled Christmas and Spirit filled new year, 2020. I also want to
thank you all for your prayers, support, appreciation, Christmas greetings and gifts
and, above all, for the joy you bring to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish com-
munity. I am so grateful to God for placing me as your pastor and to be loved by
you and being able to love you in return. You truly bring tremendous joy into my
priestly ministry.
As we come close to the end of this year and beginning of another new year, it
is inspiring to recount the number of blessings and graces God has brought into
our parish community. Time has gone by so quickly. I have started the 6th
year as
your pastor. We were also blessed to welcome our new Parochial Vicar, Fr. Peter
and our first Deacon, Deacon Joseph Dass.
Prayerfully reflecting on 2019, we see that God has blessed our Parish com-
munity with 54 newly baptized beautiful children. We had buried 51 beloved pa-
rishioners, married 7 loving couples, Confirmed 62 adolescents, and 64 children
received First Holy Communion. This is truly a sign of our parish growth in strength
and unity.
Our Chapel has a special place in the hearts of many of our parishioners.
Many of you share unforgettable and personal memories with the chapel. While we
have not made any additional renovations this year, I am thankful and grateful
to God and to all of you for your generous contributions and prayerful support
which allows us to maintain this parish treasure.
This year has been a continued year of blessing too for our ORATORIAN FA-
THERS. We are so thankful to God for His continued blessings and graces upon the
Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. In next week’s bulletin we will inform you of our new
leadership team.
Many of you are so thankful for our Liturgy, Learning and Outreach commit-
tee. They are doing tremendous work both spiritually and physically. We had one
“Taize” prayer and meditations evening, and collected coats, food and school sup-
plies for those in need.
The St. Monica Prayer Group already celebrated its 4th anniversary. It is very
important to have them pray for our families and our children. Without prayers we
are so weak, and all our activities are worthless. This group meets every Tuesday
evening at 7pm in the Oratory Chapel to imitate St. Monica’s commitment to pray
for their children, especially those facing challenges. Everyone is welcome.

Christmas Letter from Fr. Francis, cont’d:)
A number of our parishioners participated in a European Pilgrimage with the
Daughters of St. Anne, praying for us in some of the most beautiful churches in the
world.
Thank you for your support for our Parish, especially in
our Christmas collection. I truly appreciate your generous support and contribu-
tions. We encourage you to use on-line giving both for your convenience and to help
ensure a predictable parish income.
I would like to encourage you to use modern technology and social media
such as our website, Face Book, Flock Note, daily readings, etc. to stay in touch with
what’s going on in our parish. It will help all of us to shorten our announcements.
God willing, in the new year 2020, we would like to invest time, talent and re-
sources in our Religious Education program and help our children grow in their
faith and come closer to Jesus. We have 390 children in our RE program and approx-
imately 50 volunteers catechists and teachers.
As you know we have been participating in the Archdiocese of New York “Renew
and Rebuild campaign” to support important archdiocesan programs and minis-
tries and activities in our parish. Current information is found on pg. 8 of this Bul-
letin and we will have a final report in the near future.
Christmas is a time of gratitude and on your behalf I want to thank all of the
people who work tirelessly “ behind the scenes “ the many, many volunteers and
Parish Office Staff, whose efforts every day help make our parish a true family.
I will end this Christmas letter by inviting you to give each other the most
beautiful gift of Christmas in the words of saint John “love one another, because love
is from God and God is Love.”
As a symbol of our appreciation please accept a gift book from Matthew Kelly –
“Rediscover the Saints” which will be distributed at all Masses on Christmas.
I love you all with all my heart and…once again, on behalf of all the Oratori-
an Fathers, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Joyful Happy New Year!
With my love and prayers,
Fr. Francis

Christmas Giving to our Parish
Our special, annual Christmas Collection, fills a very important role in the financial health of our parish. Just as is the case with your own home, the Christmas Collection provides the resources needed to extra winter expenses in our parish home, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, as well as allowing us to have a reserve of funds available for unexpected and often costly emergencies.
Please use the envelope that is found in your packet or be sure to add Christmas Donation to your on-line contributions and be as generous as you can.
God Bless You !

Thinking about your New year’s resolutions?
Why not consider sharing a bit of your time and talent with our parish? Here are two possibilities!
LITURGY, LEARNING AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE
The role of the LLO committee, which began in the summer of 2015, is to plan parish events to help celebrate the lit-urgy and liturgical seasons; provide adults with the opportunity to grow in their faith as part of a community and provide outreach and support to members of the parish family as well as the community at large.
Members of the group often serve on other parish ministries and have as a goal bringing the parish together in support of each other. Many of their initiatives are based in fulfilling the Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy. Just a sample of their activities have included Special Remembrance Poster and Mass in November; a woman’s retreat, Taize services, sending a note to check in on families who have suffered loss of a loved one; supporting the Back to School with Dignity Program at People to People, establishment of the Caring Community; Christmas gift books; Prayer Shawl ministry , wellness workshops and many others!
We welcome new members with new ideas who might want to serve on the Steering committee which meets approxi-mately every 6-8 weeks on a Tuesday evening – as well as individuals who might be interested just in supporting one or more of the LLO’s activities. For more information leave your name at the Parish Office and someone will contact you.

PARISH HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE
One of the most wonderful things about the Parish community of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is our ability to come together as one single family. At times there are parish events which represent ALL of us as a parish community ra-ther than an event which is offered by only one group or ministry.
The parish is working to establish a Parish Hospitality Committee the members of whom would take turns assisting when this type of event - such a simple reception to follow the 12 Noon Mass on a Sunday in June, to celebrate all of the babies baptized in each calendar year or a renewed and VERY SIMPLE parish picnic - comes up.
Many wonderful activities take place in our parish and it’s important that we work together, sharing the tasks, to make each one successful. We promise to keep track of the activities and rotate among the volunteers .
If you are interested … please leave your name in the Parish Office. This is very important effort and we need your help to keep the community of OLSH alive and well!

Pastor’s Explanation of the Purpose of Letters of Good Standing
As Pastor, we often receive requests to sign a statement that a certain individual is a practicing
Catholic and eligible to serve as a Godparent, Confirmation sponsor, or RCIA sponsor. This is some-
times referred to as a LETTER OF GOOD STANDING. What I or the office staff sometimes notice is
that the person who requests my signature:
Has not registered in the parish,
Has no record of any involvement in the parish,
Has no record of attending Mass,
Has moved to another area or has just arrived from another area and has no record of being
involved either here or there.
This makes it very difficult for me and my representative to sign our name to something that we
are not sure is true. Therefore, please take note of the following guidelines for requests that you may
make in this regard.
IF YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED A PARISHIONER of our parish and would like validation of this
from the parish office, we need you to please:
Register as a parishioner.
Become involved in some parish activity or ministry, if you are not already involved.
Fulfill your obligation to participate at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and either do-
nate on-line or use our envelopes for cash or a check which allows us to track your attendance
(this is not to see how much you give, but that you attend).
If you are an adult child of parents in the parish, register yourself here or wherever you attend
Mass.
If you have moved from another parish and would like us to offer a Letter of Good Standing for
you, please bring some statement from your previous parish that you were a practicing parishioner
there.
Finally, if you move, notify us that you have moved and register in the parish of your new home.
THE PURPOSE OF a LETTER OF GOOD STANDING is to show that we value the example
and commitment of godparents and sponsors, and it is hypocritical to stand up for someone when you
either do not believe or practice what you profess. The letter assures the parish seeking it that the
person recommended to it is serious about his or her Catholic faith and will share that faith with the
one to be baptized or confirmed.
Finally, please note our parish registrations are to be used only by our parish and our diocese. In no
way do we share the information you gave us with the government or any outside organization.
With my love and prayers,
Fr. Francis Conka
