From the Pastor:

This week we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Con-ception. St. Bernard writes beautifully about our Blessed Mother. Consider praying with this and be reminded each time you see her in a Nativity scene these coming weeks:

Through you, O Mary, blessed finder of grace, may we have access to your Son, that through you we may be received by Him who through you was given to us.

May your integrity and purity excuse before him the stain of our corruption; may our humility, so pleasing to God, obtain from him the pardon of our vanity.

May your abundant charity cover the multitude of our iniq-uities, and your glorious fruitfulness supply our indigence of merits.

Our Lady… our Advocate, reconcile us to your Son, com-mend us to your Son, present us to your Son.

By the grace you have found, by the prerogative you have merited, by the Mercy you have brought forth, obtain, O blessed one, that he who vouchsafed to become partake of your infirmity and misery, may through your intercession, make us partakes of his blessedness and glory.

Mary, Immaculate Conception, pray for us!

With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

2017— the Year of Grace

Last Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, marked the begin-ning of a new church year. The sacred readings for Sundays are

organized into three cycles, A, B, and C. In this church year, we will follow the lectionary read-ings in Cycle A. In Year A, we read mostly from the Gospel of Matthew. The Gospel of John is read during the Easter season in all three years. The first reading, usually from the Old Testa-ment, reflects important themes from the Gos-pel reading. The second reading is usually from one of the epistles, a letter written to an early church community. These letters are read semi-

continuously. Each Sunday, we pick up close to where we left off the Sunday before

At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart we are blessed to open this year with our beautiful new missals, many of which have been dedicated to our loved ones. Dedication plaques are found inside the front covers and we ask that you remember the named individuals in your prayers at Mass. We are especially grateful to Pat and Ed Hoening who engraved our parish name on each missal.

If you were not able to donate or dedicate a missal at first but wish to do so now, there are a limited number still available . Please pick up a form at the back of church or in the rectory and return it as soon as possible. A second set of plaques will be placed in missals in late January.

The Caring Community of OLSH is ready to serve!

With thanks to the generous members of our parish, a true caring community, we are ready to offer assistance to those members of the OLSH parish family who need support in one of the following ways:

Respite: If you care for the ill or elderly full t ime at home and would benefit from having an hour or two where someone would visit with your family member giving you time to take care of your own personal needs, please let us know. There can be no medical responsibilities.

Visit the Homebound: Are you or do you know of parishioners who can no longer leave their homes and would truly enjoy spending an hour with a visitor? Let us know.

Rides: Do you no longer drive and would appreciate a ride to Mass, local shopping, or a medical or personal appointment? Please call the rectory to let us know.

Family Support: There are times when a family is dealing w ith unexpected illness, accident or family emergen-cy and would appreciate the gift of a meal. If this would help you navigate a difficult time, please let us know.

Please call the Parish Office during regular hours , 845-359-1230, to let us know how we can help.

Help Wanted!

Ushers are often the first persons parishioners see as they enter church and one of the last as they leave to go about their day. Ushers greet people with a smile, assist those with special

needs, take up the collection and distribute the bulletin or other materials. It is a beautiful ministry of service.

Additional ushers are needed—especially at the 12 Noon Mass on Sunday. Men and women who would like to become ushers or are interested in learning more should contact the rectory. 845-359-1230

Will You Have the Best

Advent Ever???

It’s Not Too Late !!!

Advent, at its heart, is about getting ready to en-counter Jesus at Christmas. Opening your heart to Him. Getting to know Him. Becoming a better husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, friend, etc. Best Advent Ever is a tool to help you do that.

This year the program Rediscover Christmas! will help you slow down and focus on what matters most during the busy holiday season. Experience Christmas like you never have before! When does the program run? It began on Sunday, No-vember 27 but you can still join! The program ends Monday, December 26. What can I expect? You will receive an email every day during Advent: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday – Watch a 1- to 2-minute video from one of their great presenters who dives deeper into the theme for the week.

Thursday – Watch a short, personal video from a Dy-namic Catholic team member.

Saturday – Get a free song from their brand new Christ-mas CD. Sunday – Catch up on any videos you missed, and get a preview for the coming week.

Who was St. Nicholas ????

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the 3rd century in the village of Patara which is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th. Nicholas' tomb in Myra became a popular place of pilgrimage. Because of the many wars and attacks in the region, some Christians were concerned that access to the tomb might become difficult. For both the religious and commercial advantages of a major pilgrimage site, the Italian cities of Venice and Bari vied to get the Nicholas relics. In the spring of 1087, sailors from Bari succeeded in spiriting away the bones, bringing them to Bari, a seaport on the southeast coast of Italy. An impressive church was built over St. Nicholas' crypt and many faithful journeyed to honor the saint who had rescued children, prison-ers, sailors, famine victims, and many others through his compassion, generosity, and the countless miracles attributed to his intercession. The Nicholas shrine in Bari was one of medieval Europe's great pilgrimage centers and Nicholas became known as "Saint in Bari." To this day pilgrims and tourists visit Bari's great Basilica di San Nicola

Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas' life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as protector and helper of those in need. (http://www.stnicholascenter.org/)
