PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

What a beautiful day for a run! Our Cross Country took place this morning with some very eager (and some not so eager!) students heading over to Kenny Park to complete the course. It is always great to see the students trying their best, regardless of their sporting prowess, and also wonderful to hear them cheering for and encouraging their classmates. Thank you to the parents who were able to come along to help man the course and those who were there to cheer their children on. We even had a few parents taking part! correct age for this. Please return these notes as soon as possible so that we can organise our group for lessons.

Last term we reported that our Easter Hot Cross Bun drive raised $410.00 for Project Compassion. Our money boxes from the classrooms, as well as some coins brought from home added to this to make a total of $647.15 for Project Compassion – a fantastic effort from all of our students! Teaching children to give money away to a charity or cause also teaches them empathy – a great quality to have in life. We are always very proud of the way our students (and families) support those less fortunate than themselves. Our Easter Raffle raised a total of $1531.50 – also a healthy amount to go towards resources for our students. We thank all families who bought and sold tickets for the raffle. Your support is appreciated!

Since returning to school this term, we have had to send quite a number of our students home due to being unwell. Some of these have been tummy upsets, but there are a number of children who are unwell with head colds. Unfortunately, we just cannot have students at school if they are in any way coughing or congested, as this breaches all covid safe rules. Thank you to the families who are keeping their children home if they are off-colour.

This week the dental van was to visit the students at OLSH. Unfortunately, there was an issue on their end and they didn’t show up! The van will now visit over approximately 3 days from this Monday, 3rd May.

Enjoy the beautiful weather on the weekend!

Yours sincerely, Narelle Gallagher

Book Fair / Dress Up – Tuesday 25th May Our annual Book Fair is coming up on Tuesday 25th May. This will be a dress up day so we are asking the children to come dressed as their favourite book character! The children will have an opportunity to view the books prior to the Fair and will bring home a "wish List" of items they wish to purchase along with the relevant prices. There will be a parade for the students to show off their costumes on the morning of the Fair!

Sustainability Did you know? By recycling one aluminum can you are saving enough energy to run a television for three hours. Please remember to put drink cans into the recycle bin and not the rubbish bin. We would like to say a big thank you to the Goldsmith family for donating wheat for chicken feed. Congratulations this week to Grade One/ Two S for being the class with the most rubbish free lunch boxes. In our whole school we had 75% of students with rubbish free. Well done to everyone.

It is the responsibility of the parent to make OLSH aware of any changes.

date. Melbourne Camp prices are being organised, however this will be subject to numbers attending and other costs. We will let you know ASAP when a final price has been organised.

The Victorian Police will be visiting the senior unit next Friday to continue the Safety Program. We look forward to seeing Joe and Amy again.

Grade Five News: Diaries need to be signed and returned to school each day for me to sign. Please make sure the diaries are available each

day. This term we will be reading a class novel - Because of Winn Dixie. This will be completed in class with some homework

activities expected to be completed. NAPLAN testing will take place for Grade Five children on Tuesday 11th, Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th of May.

Good luck to all the children. Grade Six News: Homework was sent home on Monday and is due back this coming Monday.

Students should have completed some revision work on fractions and also had a reading comprehension sheet to complete.

Wonder is our class novel this term. Students will have required readings and need to make sure they are reading each night to keep up with the class. Please don’t read ahead, as this also ruins it for other students. Students who haven’t completed their reading each night will have to read before school or at recess to catch up.
