Here Jesus's Divinity is manifest in the first of His mir- acles, as He changes water into the best wine. The Church's tradition has always used nuptial language in the Epiphany liturgies because this first miracle of the Lord takes place at a wedding. He is revealed as the Divine Bridegroom, Who has come to this world to claim His Bride, the Church, composed, at least potentially, of all men. This nuptial miracle is worked through the intercession of the New Eve, the Blessed Virgin Mary, God's Bride, whose consent to the marriage of God and man was besought on behalf of the entire human nature. Thus, the New Ad- am and the New Eve manifest at Cana the new wine of the new covenant of divine life to which we are all called. What glorious mysteries! It is a source of great honor and dignity for Catholics in the married state that Christ attended a marriage (the Author of marriage attends a wedding!) and chose a wedding feast for the first of His miracles. Indeed, Christ is symbolically indicating the sacramentality of Christian marriage at Cana, as He takes water (natural marriage) and elevates it to a higher level of being by trans- forming it into wine (sacramental marriage). This new wine will be capable of signifying His own Marriage to the Church, which is itself indicated by the presence of the Divine Bridegroom and the New Eve. Our Blessed Mother's words - her final words recorded in Scripture - are particularly poignant considered as a kind of loving word of counsel to Catholic married couples: "Do whatever He tells you." It is as if she is saying to our families: "Trust in Him. He is your Bridegroom. He is your God. He is my Son. He is the Author of Marriage and has promulgated its laws. Follow them. Do what He tells you. Lay down your lives for each other on the Cross. Shun all selfishness and lust. Send away any pride or stubbornness. Be generous. Keep His commandments always. Receive children generously. Never defile your marriage by unspeakable evils that separate love from childbearing and make a mockery of God. Keep yourselves holy and pure. Die on the life-giving Cross. Do what- ever He tells you because He loves you." Mary, Mother of the Church, New Eve, Glorious Bride of God, Resplendent at Cana, pray for all Catholic married couples. Pray also for the healing of marriage and family in our culture, so ravaged by lust, contraception, mortally-sinful entertainment, and divorce. Keep us all in your Immaculate Heart, revealed at the Wedding Feast at Cana. Amen. WEDDINGS/ BODAS Couples planning to be married must contact a priest well in advance of the wedding date. They must also receive personal preparation for enter-ing marriage. If either party has previously gone through any form of civil or religious marriage with another person, the priest is not permitted to set a date for the wedding until the Archbishop’s office has been consulted. It should be noted that Catholics, in order to marry validly, must marry before the parish priest or his delegate and two witnesses. A civil marriage or a marriage be-fore a non-Catholic minister is not a valid marriage. Couples in such “marriages” should contact a priest to have the situation rectified.

Q. 39: OF THE BAPTIZING OF CHRIST (EIGHT ARTICLES) We have now to consider the bap zing of Christ, concerning which there are eight points of inquiry: (1) Whether Christ should have been bap zed? (2) Whether He should have been bap zed with the bap sm of John? (3) Of the me when He was bap zed; (4) Of the place; (5) Of the heavens being opened unto Him; (6) Of the appari on of the Holy Ghost under the form of a dove; (7) Whether that dove was a real animal? (8) Of the voice of the Father witnessing unto Him. Art. 1: Whether it was fi ng that Christ should be bap zed? OBJ 1: It would seem that it was not fi ng for Christ to be bap zed. For to be bap zed is to be washed. But it was not fi ng for Christ to be washed, since there was no uncleanness in Him. Therefore it seems unfi ng for Christ to be bap zed. OBJ 2: Further, Christ was circumcised in order to fulfil the law. But bap sm was not prescribed by the law. Therefore He should not have been bap zed. OBJ 3: Further, the first mover in every genus is unmoved in regard to that movement; thus the heaven, which is the first cause of alter-a on, is unalterable. But Christ is the first principle of bap sm, ac-cording to Jn. 1:33: “He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit de-scending and remaining upon Him, He it is that bap zeth.” There-fore it was unfi ng for Christ to be bap zed. On the contrary, It is wri en (Mt. 3:13) that “Jesus cometh from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be bap zed by him.” I answer that, It was fi ng for Christ to be bap zed. First, because, as Am-brose says on Lk. 3:21: “Our Lord was bap zed because He wished, not to be cleansed, but to cleanse the waters, that, being purified by the flesh of Christ that knew no sin, they might have the virtue of bap sm”; and, as Chrysostom says (Hom. iv in Ma h.), “that He might bequeath the sanc fied waters to those who were to be bap-

zed a erwards.” Secondly, as Chrysostom says (Hom. iv in Ma h.), “although Christ was not a sinner, yet did He take a sinful nature and ‘the likeness of sinful flesh.’ Wherefore, though He needed not bap sm for His own sake, yet carnal nature in others had need thereof.” And, as Gregory Nazianzen says (Orat. xxxix) “Christ was bap zed that He might plunge the old Adam en rely in the water.” Thirdly, He wished to be bap zed, as Augus ne says in a sermon on the Epiphany (cxxxvi), “because He wished to do what He had com-manded all to do.” And this is what He means by saying: “So it be-comes us to fulfil all jus ce” (Mt.

3:15). For, as Ambrose says (on Lk. 3:21), “this is jus ce, to do first thyself that which thou wishest another to do, and so encourage others by thy example.” Reply OBJ 1: Christ was bap zed, not that He might be cleansed, but that He might cleanse, as stated above.

Reply OBJ 2: It was fi ng that Christ should not only fulfil what was prescribed by the Old Law, but also begin what appertained to the New Law. Therefore He wished not only to be circumcised, but also to be bap zed. Reply OBJ 3: Christ is the first principle of bap sm’s spiritual effect. Unto this He was not bap zed, but only in water. Will con nue next week.
