Welcome: The Redemptorist Community and Pastoral
Staff of the Redemptorist Renewal Center extends a warm and loving welcome to all who come here to pray and worship in our church. We are a community that welcomes all people as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Together we are the body of Christ, living and active today.
Our Lady of the Desert Dear Church family,
Ah the 100+ degree heat of Summer! This year Summer is also accompanied by smoke
and Covid-19. Please do not stop praying for those affected by Covid-19 and the
Bighorn fires. Pray for the hundreds of firefighters and for the front-line health and
emergency workers, all of whom are making great sacrifices in the face of fire and
contagion, to keep us safe. God bless them all!
Recent deaths. Four of our church members have recently died. They are: Tom Jackson, Ray Kovash,
Carolyn Hasenoehrl and Ed Bumby. Church services and burial arrangements are pending and I will keep you
informed. Ed Bumby succumbed to the Covid-19 virus in a hospital in Mequon, Wisconsin, having contracted it in
Arizona. May all of these our heavenly friends watch over Our Lady of the Desert community, which they loved so
much.
K of C. Our Lady of the Deser t received $3,007.50, which is 50% of the
proceeds of sales of the K of C State Raffle, as was determined by the
Council at the start of the raffle. Even with the setback of Covid-19, state
sales were good and we are grateful to our Local Council # 15704 for this
generosity toward our Church community. God bless our Knights!
Pictured are (left to right) Ray Obral, Council Treasurer; Father Ed Vella,
C.Ss.R., Council Chaplain, and George Horton, Grand Knight. This is the
latest of many donations from the K of C that has lovingly been donated to
help the Redemptorist Renewal Center during these rather tough times.
Big Event in the Fall! This is a “heads up”! We are planning a Multicultural Celebration for the afternoon and
evening of Sunday, September 27. Why? To recognize and honor the richness of our community’s ethnic roots
and celebrate the many traditions we bring to the world…different foods, colors, dance, and family and celebrate
the bond we share in Jesus Christ’s teachings. Please see the ad in this bulletin which contains more event details.
The encourage you to join in and share in the opportunity to come together.
There will be a special EARLY BIRD opportunity to purchase tickets after
Mass every weekend during the month of July through August 2. Dinner group
tables will be available for those who wish to be with friends and family. There
will be plenty of open seating available as well. A volunteer will be available
to handle check or cash ticket sales after Masses. Credit card sales are done in
the office. Remember, this begins next Friday, July 3.
We need volunteers. Please visit the VOLUNTEER binder after Masses in the church plaza and sign up. You will
be contacted. This is going to be A LOT of fun and will help to bring us together as one.
4th of July Holiday. Spend some time praying, reflecting and discussing what July 4th actually means for us,
living in a blessed land with racially diverse communities. So, what are we really celebrating when we break out
the red, white, and blue? Justice and freedom for all? All Americans do not enjoy freedom and justice to the same
degree. This year, reconsider the meaning of freedom and racial justice. As a first born of immigrants to this
county, I think about it quite a bit. You and I are to spread love, peace and inclusion. I am not the first to say it;
Jesus is. “All will know by this that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

Give praise to God that we are able to reopen! We must allow a maximum
capacity of 97 chairs in our church, approximately 1/3 of full capacity. When
we reach capacity, we will have to request that persons return for the next
Mass.
Church Hours. During the Phase I process toward full reopening, our church building will be open Monday
– Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for private prayer only. No groups or public worship is to take place. On
Fridays the church will be locked all day until the time for gathering for the 4:00 p.m. Mass, in order for the
building to be thoroughly disinfected.
Illness. If you are ill, regardless of age, please shelter in place and worship from home. Online Mass:
https://www.youtube.com/c/OurLadyoftheDesertChurch
Risk. There has been an increase in Covid-19 cases in Arizona. Please understand clear ly that there is an
inherent risk, regardless of age or health, in attending any public event, including religious services, especially for
those who are vulnerable of age or health. While we are working to reduce the risk, there are no risk-free
situations. A person’s presence at Mass constitutes his or her understanding and acceptance of this essential level
of risk. This is very important. Reflect well on this.
Wear a face mask! This is a requirement for all persons who will be present for weekend Masses at Our
Lady of the Desert. The use of a face mask is a sign of our desire to do our part in helping to prevent others from
possible infection. Please do not try to come to Mass without wearing a face mask.
Distancing. While on Renewal Center proper ty, all persons must maintain str ict social distancing protocols;
this entails maintaining approximately 6 feet of space between unrelated persons indoors as well as outdoors.
Hope. Following the protocols is definitely a discipline. It is also a sign of hope for better times to
come. Give thanks to God that we are moving forward!!

Points of importance:
Invitation from K of C Council
# 15704
My name is Ray Obral. I have been a Knight
of Columbus for over 20 years. I am glad that I joined. I am blessed to be with
like-minded men and their families who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ. Knights
share a desire to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors, and role models. We
put family, charity, and community first. Our principles are Charity, Unity, Frater-
nity and Patriotism. Since our founding by soon-to-be Blessed Father Michael
McGivney in 1882 in New Haven, CT, membership in the Knights of Columbus
has been open to practicing Catholic men 18 years of age or older.
We support our Priests and Deacons. Bishops Weisenburger and Kicanas are
Knights of Columbus and they support this article inviting men in the Diocese to
consider becoming a Knight of Columbus.
If you feel that you do not have the time to be Knight, you can choose the projects
you want to be involved with. Above all however, the Knights of Columbus be-
lieve that family comes first. All we ask for is that you give 24 hours of work
within a year.
The following are service activities accomplished during the 6 years that we
have been a Council: cleaned up the outdoor Stations of the Cross, painted the stor-
age shed, ‘retired’ old and damaged American flags, served as Greeters, Ushers,
Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and Sacristans in the church, planned and hosted
the Christmas Gala and Reverse Raffle fundraiser ($6,400.00 went to the Renewal
Center). We sold State Raffle tickets and half of the ticket sales go back to the Re-
newal Center ($3,000.00 this year and $5,000.00 last year). We collected dona-
tions at the neighborhood stores where 3/4‘s of what was collected went to local
entities that aid persons with intellectual disabilities. Recently, we collected over
$40,000.00 in donations from the Knights in our Council for the Renewal Center.
This donation came at a critical time when the scheduled retreats for April, May,
June, and most of July canceled because of the Covid – 19 pandemic, resulting in
no income from retreat ministry.
Do yourself and your family a favor, consider joining the Knights of Columbus!
If you would like to talk about becoming a Knight of Columbus and receive
more information, please call me at 520-403-5003.
Serving God – Serving the Community, This is Who We Are – This is What We Do!
God of Heaven and Earth, you created the one human family
and endowed each person with great dignity.
Aid us, we pray, in overcoming the sin of racism. Grant us your grace in eliminating this blight
from our hearts, our communities, our social and civil institutions.
Fill our hearts with love for you and our neighbor so that we may work with you
in healing our land from racial injustice. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
~ United States Conference of Catholic Bishops~
Our mission is to be a place where the contemplative spirit of the human person may be discovered, fed and nourished. It is a place, an oasis in the Sonoran Desert, where Individuals encounter God and “feel the burn” of the Holy Spirit.
You may request additional envelopes on the table at the side entrance of the Church; the envelopes will
be available the following weekend in the box on the table at the side entrance of the Church.

Bishop Weisenburger has written us that the Arizona spike in Covid-19 cases is very disconcerting. There clearly has been an increase in infections and deaths. At present the Bishop has decided not to reverse the decision on opening parishes. However, he says that we cannot presume that a temporary return to closing our parishes is out of the question. Please continue to follow all protocols everywhere. . Don’t take any risks. Remember that our Weekend Mass is recorded and available online.
