PDF ME PLEASE. Thanks.

From the Desk of Fr. Dooley Hello friends,

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ). We are observing a liturgical feast that makes us uniquely Catholic. It may seem ra-ther odd to have a day dedicated to the Eucharist, but the Church gives us this day to rein-force our wonder at the mystery contained in the Eucharistic Sacrament. We cannot over-stress the nourishment that Christ gives us from the Altar. It is what makes us unique. The moment the Church takes the Eucharist for granted is the moment we cease to be. One of my favorite and one of the most unique writers in American literature is Flannery O’Connor (1925-1964). She grew up in the predominant Protestant American south as a Roman Catholic. If you want a crash course on her life, watch the newly released episode of American Masters: Flannery (PBS). Her short stories and writings describe the obscene and chaos of society in the deep south. Some of my favorite short stories include: The River, Everything That Rises Must Converge, and The Violent Bear It Away. Her novel, Wise Blood, is a perfect analogy of contempo-rary Christianity attempting to preach to the world without Christ. Flannery’s works contain the American Catholic imagination. This led to her popular-ity as a writer, but also caused her to be greatly misunderstood. Her short story, A Temple of the Holy Ghost, gives us the theme of the Holy Eucharist and the love of Christ. I will not spoil the plot, but it is a story that describes the Incarnation, our limitations, and the search for the Truth. In essence, the Catholic is tasked to see grace amidst the cynicism of the world. Grace can be described as the loving presence of God and the individual’s response in that presence. We can look to the First Reading from Exodus: “Then he (Moses) took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, ‘This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words of his.’” Moses is inviting the audience to this moment of encounter with God. Likewise, O’Connor knew her audience in her literary works. She states: “there is a moment in every story, in which the presence of grace can be felt as it waits to be accepted or rejected, even though the reader may not recognize the moment.” The Eucharist allows us to be attentive to those moments of grace, especially in times of confusion and trouble. Is the Eucharist part of your story as a human being and Christian? “….she looked out the window and looked over a stretch of pasture land that rose and fell with a gathering greenness until it touched the dark woods. The sun was a huge red ball like an elevated Host drenched in blood and when it sank out of sight, it left a line in the sky like a red clay road hanging over the trees.” (from: A Temple of the Holy Ghost). May the Eucharist give you grace to tell your story. May the Eucharist empower our parish and school. Under the protection of Our Lady of Peace, Fr. Dooley Note Well: PLEASE read A Temple of the Holy Ghost or any of Flannery O’Connor’s works. Her works should be on every American Catholic bookshelf.

Flannery O’Connor

If you’re curious about the Catholic Faith, or you have even thought about becom-ing a Catholic, our Rite of Christian Initia-tion for Adults (RCIA) program is just for you. Adults from all faith traditions, or no religious background at all, are welcome to participate in our program of instruc-tion designed especially for the needs and lifestyles of busy adults. There are no obligations, pressures or commitments in your participation—just come and learn! Our Lady of Peace’s program is unique for a number of reasons. It is a structured, in-structional, interactive program, paced for adult learners. We meet weekly beginning in early September and culminate with Initiation on the Church on Easter Vigil in the Spring. Our RCIA team is dedicated to meeting the needs of the individual partic-ipants. They are back up by a clergy that is involved and caring. It’s worth at least one phone call or email to find out more! Please contact Deacon Jeffrey Fortkamp at 614.578.5420 or [email protected].

Please note that we are changing our system for the

devotional candles in the Church. If you want to light a

candle at the Blessed Mother Shrine or the St. Joseph Shrine, you may light any unlit candle. There are money boxes on the

walls beside the candle racks where you can pay for the

candle(s) that you light. We will no longer be keeping candles

or collecting money in the cupboard near the old

confessionals.

We need your love, energy and support! For more information call Mary Pardi - Serra Club Downtown, 614-284-8019, [email protected] or Colleen

Alpha Survey

All parishioners are asked to take a moment to complete this brief survey regarding your partic-ipation or non-participation in the Alpha program. The survey results will help us respond most effectively to the needs of our parish community. Please scan the QR code to complete the survey. Thank you!

Our Thanks and Appreciation for the continued support the parish has given the Our Lady of Peace St Vincent de Paul Conference during the pandemic time. Because of your generous dona-tions, we have been able to assist many families with food, utility and rent assis-tance; and other things like vital repairs on their homes, beds for their children, and motel rooms for homeless. In addi-tion, we have continued to donate over 1,000 sandwiches a month to the St Law-rence Haven food line. We will be col-lecting donations at the door of the church after the Masses on 5 and 6 June. (The collection at the doors is an opportunity to give for those who did not give though the envelope.)

Transportation Needed! There are five residents of Wesley Glen who would like to attend in-person Mass at OLP. However, transportation is needed! We are looking for a team of people who would be willing to help with transporting them. We would like to provide transportation on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. It would also be nice to have 2-3 drivers on these Sundays, so that it is not necessary to have a van in order to transport them. If you can help with this project, please contact Rose Daiga at 614-565-0795, or e-mail Rose at [email protected]. Thank you!
