The art of persuasive writing is a skill that is acquired over many years of education. Students at OLMC School are introduced to argu-mentative writing in 1st grade and continue to hone the process for the next eight years. The 8th grade students recently submitted their final persuasive essays which consisted of four to six page, research-based arguments on social topics of their choice. I had the chance to read the fourth grade students’ essays this week, and I was impressed by the quality of writing and the critical thinking skills on display! Some of the students chose serious topics to discuss such as why we should have safety nets around baseball fields, why more people should use solar panels and wind turbines and why marine life should be protected. Others focused on topics such as why going on a cruise is the best vacation, why you should adopt a dog, or why Randazzo’s Pizza Shop is the best. One student even set out to persuade his audience that clowns shouldn’t exist! And naturally, some of the students wrote about academic issues such as why students should have less homework and that the school day should be shorter because teachers need a lot of rest (a personal favorite)! One of the most touching essays was written by a student who joined our school at the beginning of 4th grade. He writes:
“Looking for a good school? I recommend Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Doylestown. The school has good teachers, nice students, and a welcoming spirit that makes you feel like you are part of a school community.
The first reason you should go to OLMC is the teachers are nice. They are very smart and teach in a way you would understand. The teachers make the school seem fun. They encourage each student to work hard and do his or her best. Secondly, the students are very nice. Being social is an important part of the school experience. It is fun to talk with your friends at lunch. Also, when you are at recess, it is fun to be able to play with all of your classmates.
Finally at OLMC, you feel like you are a part of a school community. Everyone helps each other. When you walk into the school, you can tell that everyone is working together to help each other get better. Students are caring, for example, if somebody drops their books because someone stops to help them. That spirit of caring is all around the school.
This is why you should go to OLMC. There are good teachers, nice students, and you feel like you are a part of a school community. “
I don’t know about you, but I’m convinced! God bless, Dawn Parker
