The Holy Mass: The Liturgy of the Word
Each Sunday we listen to three readings. The first reading is almost always from the Old Testament, the part of our Bible that was written before the time of Jesus. Often the readings are from the prophets, or they tell us the story of our Jewish ancestors and their discovery of God's love and law. The second reading is from the New Testament. Usually, the reading is from one of the letters of St. Paul or of the other apostles. These letters are instructions of the early church leaders directed to the community of believers, encouraging them to live their faith and to behave according to their Christian call. The third reading is one of the four gospels. The Gospels tell us the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The readings are taken from the Lectionary, which has divided almost the entire Bible into the brief readings we hear at Mass. Every year one of the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) is read. If one goes to Mass every Sunday of the year, he/she can hear almost the entire gospel. The Gospel of John is used in special moments, such as Easter. Also, because the Gospel of Mark is short, it does not fill every
Sunday of the year. Therefore, part of the year is dedicated to John’s gospel. After the readings is the homily, which is not only to explain the readings, but to say what they mean to us today. The homily, the profession of faith and the universal prayer conclude the liturgy of the word.
