A Note from Music Ministry…
The “Ave Maria” was composed in 1825 as part of a collection of songs written by German composer, Franz Schubert. It is based on a Scottish poem by Walter Scott, “The Lady of the Lake”, which takes place in the Scottish Highlands. Ellen, the main character, has been sent into exile with her father fleeing from the reigning monarch, King James. As war is about to break out, Ellen begins to sing a prayer to the Virgin Mary, ac-companied by a harp and calling upon her for help. The warriors pause to listen and then begin their battle.
In its original form, the “Ave Maria” is a German song with German lyrics describing a woman imploring the Virgin Mary. The opening words of the song “Ave Maria” (Latin for Hail Mary) led to the idea of adapting Schubert’s melody for the traditional Roman Catholic prayer. The Latin version of the "Ave Maria" is now so frequently heard with Schubert's melody that it has led to the misconception that he originally wrote the Latin version which we hear at mass.
At Our Lady of Light we will hear a number of Ave Maria song settings: The Schubert Ave Maria (German), The Bach-Gounod Ave Maria (French), The Caccini Ave Maria (Italian),
The Santiago Ave Maria (Phillipines).
For the past year the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul at Our Lady of Light has partnered
with two other local charities to provide
transitional housing for homeless families.
They have access to a 2 bedroom fully
furnished mobile home which is provided at no cost to the
family. This gives them the opportunity to secure
permanent housing without worrying about “where do we
stay tonight.” To date we have assisted 7 families in
successfully finding a permanent place to live.
If you are in need of assistance or know of someone in
need please call, St. Vincent de Paul Society at
239-690-6685.

SHARE the JOURNEY
The Diocese of Venice continues to promote ‘Share the
Journey’, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father,
Pope Francis. Below is the second of the series designed
to answer questions specifically on Refugee Resettlement.
This will serve as an aide to build bridges of reconciliation,
understanding and hospitality.
How Do Refugees Contribute?
1. Refugees must pay back the cost of their travel to
America through a loan arrangement with the International
Organization for Migration, a U.S. Department of State
contractor. Flight costs range from $1,500 - $9,000. The
U.S. is the only resettlement country that requires refugees
to pay for their transportation. Source: MRS
2. The MRS resettlement agency network of over 80
affiliates hire employment specialists to prepare refugees
for the job market. Eighty five percent of refugees get a job
and are self-sufficient within six months of arrival. Source: MRS Refugee Research Blog
3. Refugees find work far earlier in the U.S. than in
other countries and start businesses at a quicker pace than
the U.S.-born population. Source: Chmura Economics & Analytics: MP

Growing in Faith Beyond Sunday
Pentecost Sunday - The great feast that marks the birth of the Catholic Church by the power of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost Sunday, is May 20th. Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated 50 days after Easter, marking the end of the Easter season. Red is the liturgical color for this day and the faithful are encouraged to wear red to Church that day. Red is symbolic of the love of the Holy Spirit and recalls the tongues of fire in which the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles that first Pentecost. The color red also reminds us of the blood of the martyrs. These are the believers of every generation who by the power of the Holy Spirit hold firm to the true faith even at the cost of their lives.
This is the one feast of the Church’s year when we focus on the third person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit. The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit are: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (meaning right judgment), Fortitude (meaning courage), Knowledge, Piety (meaning reverence), Fear of the Lord (meaning wonder and awe in God’s presence). Without these we cannot be true followers of Christ. Pray for an increase of whichever you need most.
A Prayer for the Graduate
As you start your new journey, May the Lord lead the way ~
Upholding, sustaining with each passing day. While you walk this new road, May God be your guide
As you follow His path and with Him abide.
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path."
Psalm 119:105

Parenting Pointer As we near the end of a school year, children may look forward to more free time during the summer; maybe you do too. Summer can be more relaxed but also an opportunity to include your child in tasks you need help with.
Consider starting the custom of a summer job jar. Children pull as many jobs as assigned, and after their
jobs are done, their time is free. www.susanvogt.net
