first sunday of lent / 10 domingo de cuaresma 3

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,This is the First Sunday of Lent and during Lent many strive to perform acts of penance (i.e. give up something, etc.). Christians are asked to perform penances as a means of humbling themselves before the Lord and recognize how vulnerable they are to sin.

In today’s gospel we learn that after His bap-tism in the Jordan River Jesus went into the desert. He fasted for forty days. He was fam-ished and vulnerable. The devil appeared to

him and offered Jesus three temptations. These temptations were reflective of the temptations the Israelites encountered while wandering in the Sinai Des-ert. The first temptation had to do with sinful pleasures by filling the prover-bial “hole in the soul.” We are tempted to believe that satisfaction comes with wealth, celebrity, and power.  Jesus responded “Man does not live on bread alone…” The second temptation the devil offered to Jesus was an easy path to the Kingdom of God through political power. The third temptation planted in Jesus the temptation to doubt God and to trust in the devil. Jesus overcame the various temptations we all surrendered to.

I would ask you to reflect upon your own sinful inclinations and use this Lenten season to examine your conscience, confess your sins, to do penance and to amend your life so as to grow in holiness and true happiness.

First Week of Lent - CRS Rice Bowl/ Primera Semana de Cuaresma – CRSPlato de Arroz

Growing Food in Burkina Faso/ Cultivamos alimen-tos en Burkina FasoIn the small West African nation of Burkina Faso, 80% of the population are farmers. Frequent droughts make it difficult to produce enough food for the

entire year. Often, farmers can only grow enough to feed their families for seven months. The rest of the year is called “the hungry season.” This week, we pray for families in Burkina Faso and give to CRS Rice Bowl to help small-scale farmers.

Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty.

Richard Lodgya (l) and David Baba participated in the annual men’s retreat held on the weekend of January 25-27 at the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre. This event takes place each year in late January and is open to all men in the parish.

I have never been on a retreat before and truly enjoyed the experience. The solitude and spiritual guidance, shared with friends, made for an exceptionally rewarding weekend.

— Richard Lodyga
