Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, After a year of many challenges living through the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, it was announced that we will actually be moving forward with getting back to normal in the next month or so. Sporting events, restau-rants and other public venues will be relaxing protocols that have been in effect since March of 2020. The Archdiocese will be holding a webinar this coming Wednesday to offer instructions regarding these changes as they apply to our Sunday and daily Mass worship and other gatherings. We will be sharing this information with all of you as soon as we receive it. So, once again, we are in a transitional time of change as it pertains to many aspects of our daily lives. Transition and change, even a welcome change that we look forward to-can be a challenge, because we are creatures of habit. After Jesus’ Ascension to the Father, which we celebrated this past Thursday, the Apostles and disciples find themselves also in a transitional time of change, as recounted for us in our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. As creatures of habit, they too, were in a place where they were trying to cling to what they know, while realizing simultaneously that things are not what they were before. This time was frightening for them. They had to rearrange their priorities, their lives and reconstitute their community. In order to faithfully carry out our Lord’s command to bring the Gospel to and baptize all nations, they needed to navigate their way through this period of transition. Accepting this “tweener” time and remaining faithful to their religious tradition would be two of the biggest challenges for the Apostles and Jesus’ first disciples. Yet, it was in the promise of His sending the New Advocate, the Holy Spirit, that Jesus would guarantee that this fearful band of disciples would succeed in their call to continue His mission. The transition that we speak of really has a twofold understanding. It refers, firstly, to the proximate experience of Jesus’ Ascension and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It also refers to the Second Coming of Jesus at the end times. For the early Church community, the belief was that Jesus’ return was imminent. The Holy Spirit’s guidance of the Church for more than 20 centuries has helped the Church to adapt to every circumstance and get through great trials, difficulties and even scandals, as well as through plagues, pandemics and persecutions. During this past 14 months of living through a pandemic, the Church universal, local and our own beloved OLC Parish Family has faced a lot of challenges, changes, loss of loved ones, sacrifices and transitions. Yet, through it all, we found new ways and opportunities to continue to celebrate our faith and share that faith, especially to a world hampered by fear and anxiety. The Holy Spirit has inspired and guided us to adapt and to share the love of Christ with others, no matter what we are dealing with. As St. Augustine said long ago, “We are a Resurrection People and Alleluia is our song!” This needs to be our approach as we face yet another traditional time. As we look forward to getting back to “normal”, we know it won’t be exactly as it was before. However, the power of the Holy Spirit, as He had done with the Apostles and the Church up to this present time, has transformed us. We come out of this even more equipped to bring the Good News of Christ’s love to the world. May the Lord’s High Priestly Prayer, empowered through the Holy Spirit, continue to unite us, keep us from the evil one and give us the motivation to share His joy with the world. In Christ’s Peace, Fr. O’Neill
