The par ish staff is al-ways looking to update our communion call list so that all can celebrate the sacraments with regular

Mensaje De Nuestro Pastor

La semana pasada tuve que acudir para servir como Jurado. Es la tercera vez que he sido llamado desde que estoy aquí en Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Como siempre, ha sido una experiencia fascinante para mí. Esta vez sin embargo me trajo mucho materi-al de lectura. Sentado en la Sala de Espera con cientos de per-sonas, fue increíble apenas oír a nadie hablar o a cualquier perso-na hacer alguna clase de ruidos. ¡No recuerdo a nuestra Iglesia siempre sonando más que tranquila! Como estas últimas pocas veces, nunca pensé que me llamarían como jurado a causa de la larga tradición de eximir a clérigos y a otros profesionales para servir de jurado. No es en referencia al título de confiar o a la posición de alguien eximido. Por el contrario es especialmente en relación con el clero, hay una serie de factores en juego. Para unos, muchos clérigos han Servido en muchas partes del Bronx. Es sin duda más que posible confiar que pudieran conocer a una de las personas en cualquier lado del juicio. Más que eso, espe-cialmente para un sacerdote Católico, podría ser una cuestión de conciencia que le exige que no se siente en un jurado y juzgue los méritos del caso, especialmente porque es sacerdote para ambos, para el acusado y los acusadores. En cualquier caso, fui este pasado martes ha jurado y pase la mayor parte del dia allí. Para mi sorpresa, por primera vez, fui llamado a un caso, inmedi-atamente comence a preguntarme lo que esto implicaría y como afectaría a la parroquia, especialmente si el juicio prolongado durara semanas y que nos dijeron era una posibilidad remota. Sin embargo, tan pronto como entre en la Sala de Audiencias, reconocí al Juez inmediatamente. Le conocí en varias ocasiones, incluso aquí en Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Fue muy gracio-so para todos nosotros y explico tan bien las cosas a todos de una manera que podíamos entender. Cuando preguntaron si alguien quería hacer su caso en cuanto a porque no querían ser miembros del jurado para este caso, junto con otros levante mi mano, iba a ser mi caso hablando de dificultades que mi Iglesia y yo su-friríamos debido a las exigencias del Ministerio aquí en nuestra parroquia. Antes de poder hablar, el Juez dijo: "Padre, y le ex-plique a todos la naturaleza de nuestra relación". Respetuosa-mente me expulsaron del jurado. Tome el tren "B" a casa, como echaba de menos el tren "D" a lo largo del camino, comence a apreciar a las muchas personas trabajando dia a dia en nuestro sistema judicial. He sido un crítico muchas veces en el pasado y con razón. Sin embargo, sobretodo me sorprendió el respeto y la profesionalidad de este Juez. Debe de dar este tipo de discurso tantas veces. Sin embargo, nada parecía rutina en la manera en que él nos habló a nosotros como miembros del jurado para el juicio pendiente. El entro en grandes detalles sobre una acusación que significo y que no debería perjudicarnos contra alguien acusado. Fue amable, paciente y desafiante diría, justo. En este dia y tiempo, cuando hay mucho que decir sobre nuestro sistema judicial, solo quería decir que tuve un verdadero sentido de equidad y justicia en el trabajo la semana pasada. Siempre estaremos mejor cuando nos respetemos y escuchemos unos a otros. Espero que su Cuaresma vaya bien. Ordene unos libros para leer durante cuaresma por el Padre Robert Rolheiser, OMI, uno es profundizando en nuestra madurez Cristiana, otro es acerca de la Oración y estoy guardando el tercero para la Semana Santa ya que ofrece reflexiones sobre la Pasión de la Cruz. Rolheiser es un gran escritor espiritual Estoy deseoso poder compartir sus libros con ustedes pronto. ¿Que están leyendo para la Cuaresma?

From the Pastor’s Desk

This past week I had to report for jury duty. It is now about the third time that I have been called since I have been here at Our Lady of Angels. As always, it was a fascinating experience for me. This time around, however, I brought plenty of reading ma-terial. Sitting in the large waiting room with hundreds of people, it was amazing to hardly hear anyone speaking or anyone mak-ing any kind of noise. I can’t recall our church ever sounding that quiet! Like these past few times, I never thought that I would be called as a juror because of the longstanding tradition of exempting clergy and other professionals from serving on jury duty. It was not in deference to a clergyperson’s title or someone else’s position that exempted them. Rather, especially with re-gard to the clergy, there were a number of factors at play. For one, many clergy have served in different parts of the Bronx. It is certainly more than possible that a clergyperson could know one of the people on either side of the trial. More than that, es-pecially for a Catholic priest, it could be a matter of conscience that would demand that he not sit on a jury and judge the merits of the case, especially because he is priest to both the accused and to the accusers. In any event, I went this past Tuesday to jury duty and spent most of the day there. To my surprise, for the first time ever, I was called to a trial. I immediately began to wonder what this would entail and how it would impact the parish, especially if the trial dragged on for weeks which we were told was a remote possibility. However, as soon as I entered the courtroom, I recognized the judge right away! I had met him on a number of occasions, including here at Our Lady of Angels. He was very gracious to all of us and explained things so well to all of us in a way that everyone could understand. When he asked if anyone wanted to make their case as to why they couldn’t be jurors for this case, I, along with oth-ers raised my hand. I was going to make my case by speaking of hardship that my church and I would suffer because of the minis-try demands here at our parish. Before I could speak, the judge said, “Father, I explained to everyone the nature of our relation-ship.” I was respectfully dismissed from the jury. I took the “B” train home as I missed the “D” train. All along the way, I began to appreciate the many people working day in and day out in our court system. I have been a critic many a time in the past, and for good reason. However, I was especially struck this time by the respect and professionalism of this judge. He must give this kind of speech to the jury so many times. Yet, nothing seemed routine in the way he spoke to us as jurors for the pend-ing trial. He went into great detail about what an indictment meant and how that shouldn’t prejudice us against someone charged. He was gracious, patient and I would dare say, just. In this day and age, when there is a lot to say about our court system, I just wanted to say that I had a real sense of fairness and justice at work this past week. We are always at our best when we respect one another and listen to one another. I hope your Lent is going well. I ordered some books to read for this Lent by Fr. Robert Rolheiser, OMI. One is on deepening our Christian maturity, another is on prayer, and I am saving the third one for Holy Week as it offers reflections on the passion of the cross. Rolheiser is a great spiritual writer. I look forward to sharing his books with you soon. What are you reading for Lent?
