THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT Morning Worship - 9: 30 a.m.

March 7, 2021

Silent prayer for use in preparation for worship: Dear Father, take this day’s life into Thine own keeping. Control all my

thoughts and feelings. Direct all my energies. Instruct my mind. Sustain my will. Take my hands and make them skillful to serve Thee. Take my feet and make them swift to do Thy bidding. Take my eyes and keep them fixed upon

Thine everlasting beauty. Take my mouth and make it eloquent in testimony to Thy love. Make this day a day of obedience, a day of spiritual joy and peace.

Make this day’s work a little part of the work of the Kingdom of my Lord Christ, in Whose name these my prayers are said. Amen.

A prayer of John Baillie, 1886-1960

PRELUDE Erhalt Uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort J. G. Walther (Keep us, Lord, Faithful to Your Word)

John Black, Organ

Thy Word arr. K.L. Phillips Alexandra Nichols, Violin

*PSALTER CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 19:1-4, 14)

The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims His handiwork.

DAY AFTER DAY THEY POUR FORTH SPEECH; NIGHT AFTER NIGHT THEY REVEAL KNOWLEDGE.

They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them, yet their music goes out through all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

MAY THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH AND THE MEDITATION OF MY HEART BE ACCEPTABLE IN THY SIGHT, O LORD, MY ROCK AND MY REDEEMER

*HYMN The Heavens Declare Thy Glory / The Church’s One Foundation PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison):

ALMIGHTY GOD OF PURITY AND GRACE, IN ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS I CANNOT CLAIM A RIGHT TO BE FORGIVEN, BUT ONLY CAST MYSELF UPON THINE UNBOUNDED LOVE. I CAN PLEAD NO MERIT OF MY OWN; I CAN PLEAD NO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES; I CANNOT PLEAD THE FRAILTY OF MY NATURE; I CANNOT PLEAD THE FORCE OF MY TEMPTATIONS; I CANNOT PLEAD THE PERSUASION OF BEING LED ASTRAY. I CAN ONLY SAY, FOR THE SAKE OF JESUS CHRIST THY SON, MY LORD, FORGIVE. AMEN.

A Prayer of John Baillie, 1886-1960

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (responsively, from Jeremiah 31) “The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new

covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.” “THIS IS THE COVENANT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THAT

TIME,” DECLARES THE LORD. “I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR MINDS AND WRITE IT ON THEIR HEARTS. I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY WILL BE MY PEOPLE.”

“For I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more.” IN JESUS CHRIST, WE ARE FORGIVEN. AMEN.

*GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen, amen. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed

WE BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, AND OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE; AND IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER BEFORE ALL WORLDS, GOD OF GOD, LIGHT OF LIGHT, VERY GOD OF VERY GOD, BEGOTTEN, NOT MADE, BEING OF ONE SUBSTANCE WITH THE FATHER BY WHOM ALL THINGS WERE MADE; WHO FOR US AND FOR OUR SALVATION CAME DOWN FROM

HEAVEN, AND WAS INCARNATE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN MARY, AND WAS MADE MAN; AND WAS CRUCIFIED ALSO FOR US UNDER PONTIUS PILATE. HE SUFFERED AND WAS BURIED; AND THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES, AND ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN,

AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER. AND HE SHALL COME AGAIN WITH GLORY TO JUDGE BOTH THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, WHOSE KINGDOM SHALL HAVE NO END. AND WE BELIEVE

IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD AND GIVER OF LIFE, WHO PROCEEDETH FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON, WHO WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON TOGETHER IS WORSHIPED AND GLORIFIED, WHO SPOKE BY THE PROPHETS. AND WE BELIEVE ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. WE

ACKNOWLEDGE ONE BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND WE LOOK FOR THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD, AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU.

Lift up your hearts.

WE LIFT THEM UP TO THE LORD.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE. ALMIGHTY GOD, WHO HAS GIVEN YOUR ONLY SON TO DIE FOR US, AS WE ARE UNITED IN THE COMMUNION OF HIS MOST PRECIOUS BODY AND BLOOD, SO MAY WE BE CLEANSED FROM OUR SIN, AND STRENGTHENED TO FOLLOW HIM. MERCIFUL GOD, WHO HAS GIVEN US A NEW COMMANDMENT THAT WE SHOULD LOVE ONE ANOTHER, GIVE US GRACE THAT WE MAY FULFILL IT. HALLOW OUR LIVES, FOR HIS SAKE WHO LOVED US AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR US. BLESS AND SANCTIFY WITH YOUR WORD AND SPIRIT THESE YOUR OWN GIFTS OF BREAD AND WINE, THAT WE MAY RECEIVE BY FAITH CHRIST CRUCIFIED FOR US, AND SO FEED UPON HIM THAT HE MAY BE MADE ONE WITH US AND WE WITH HIM, THAT OUR LIVES MAY PROCLAIM THE ONE CRUCIFIED AND RISEN, WHO TAUGHT US TO PRAY:

“OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD; AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US; AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOREVER. AMEN”

Genesis 12:1-5The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Luke 4:5-8 (1-4, 9-13)

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, He was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” [Deut. 8:3] And the devil took Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to Him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”

And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’” [Deut. 6:11]

And he took Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” [Psalm 91:11-12]

And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:13] And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

TODAY is the third Sunday of our annual Lenten coin drive to benefit Heifer International. All funds raised through this drive enable the Sunday School to purchase domestic animals for impoverished families worldwide. The purchase of these animals will help feed families as well as generate income for them through the sale of eggs, cheese, milk, wool and other animal byproducts. Last year the pandemic restrictions discontinuing in-person worship commenced the third week of Lent, but several of you continued to direct special contributions to compensate the anticipated loss of coin income. Some brought coins to the office, others wrote checks for the value of the coins they had, and still others simply made designated donations … and through your generosity we received just about the exact amount as in 2018 (and just a bit less than the record amount received 2019). Under current protocols we will NOT have the children collecting these coins during the service of worship as in years past, but we will continue this annual appeal (which I think began seventeen years ago … I’m still checking to verify that!). You may leave your bagged coins in the offering plate, bring them to the office, or designate a donation by check and send it to the church office.
