Word of Life study will pick back up on Wednesday, September 7,
2016. The study will be from the book “Praying with Paul” by D.
A. Carson & Brian Tabb.
It’s doubtful that there is any Christian who has not sometimes
found it difficult to pray. In itself this is neither surprising nor de-
pressing: it is not surprising, because we are still pilgrims with
many lessons to learn; it is not depressing, because struggling with
such matters is part of the way we learn. The apostle Paul found the
kind of spiritual closeness in his own fellowship with the Father
that is available to all of us. Praying with Paul leads group mem-
bers into the Epistles to see what Paul taught in his "school of pray-
er." The book covers the priorities of prayer, a God-centered frame-
work for prayer, and practices for a more meaningful and dynamic
prayer life. Christians today can still achieve the confidence Paul
enjoyed by following his life-shaping principles and searching for a
deeper devotional experience.
The cost per book is $15.
To secure your copy, complete the tear off form below and see
Sis. Peggy Palmer in the Narthex with your form & payment
after church TODAY. NOTE: W e will only order books for
those who have paid in full.
Instructions for Commitment Card
The building fund line on our regular envelope will now be used for building
maintenance and improvement.
Our building campaign is two (2) phases. The first 2-1/2 years are dedicated to
paying off the mortgage. We rounded it off to three-year gift amount for con-
venience. If we get at least 200 people to commit to $25 weekly above their
normal tithes and offerings, we will pay the mortgage off by June/July 2018.
The last 2-1/2 years (for a total of 5 years) will be funds dedicated for when a
building/land becomes available for us to build/move to a larger location where
we will have more classrooms, office space, parking, a larger sanctuary, and so
we can do more ministry. If you are committed to the entire 5 years, please fill
out under “ I/We plan to give accordingly:” on the commitment card.
Example: Total Three-year Gift Amount $25 weekly
If you are committed or all 5 years
I/We plan to give accordingly:
$25 weekly for 260 weeks
You can drop your completed commitment card in the offering basket OR
turn it in directly to the Trustees OR Church office.
The official start of our Building campaign was Vision Sunday, January 17,
2016. It’s not too late to be a part of this endeavor. Pastor Coleman is asking
each member to prayerfully consider the level of weekly contributions above
your normal tithes and offerings. As you pray, meditate on the campaign theme
and scripture, “Let Us Rise and Build,” Neh. 2:18 (NASB), “And they said, let
us rise up and build, so they strengthened their hands for this good work.”
If you need an envelope and commitment card, ask any usher.
The Ministry of the Unnoticed
Blessed are the poor in spirit… —Matthew 5:3
The New Testament notices things that do not seem worthy of notice by our standards. “Blessed
are the poor in spirit….” This literally means, “Blessed are the paupers.” Paupers are remarka-
bly commonplace! The preaching of today tends to point out a person’s strength of will or the
beauty of his character— things that are easily noticed. The statement we so often hear, “Make a
decision for Jesus Christ,” places the emphasis on something our Lord never trusted. He never
asks us to decide for Him, but to yield to Him— something very different. At the foundation of
Jesus Christ’s kingdom is the genuine loveliness of those who are commonplace. I am truly
blessed in my poverty. If I have no strength of will and a nature without worth or excellence,
then Jesus says to me, “Blessed are you, because it is through your poverty that you can enter
My kingdom.” I cannot enter His kingdom by virtue of my goodness— I can only enter it as an
absolute pauper.
The true character of the loveliness that speaks for God is always unnoticed by the one pos-
sessing that quality. Conscious influence is prideful and unchristian. If I wonder if I am being of
any use to God, I instantly lose the beauty and the freshness of the touch of the Lord. “He who
believes in Me…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). And if I examine
the outflow, I lose the touch of the Lord.
Who are the people who have influenced us most? Certainly not the ones who thought they did,
but those who did not have even the slightest idea that they were influencing us. In the Christian
life, godly influence is never conscious of itself. If we are conscious of our influence, it ceases
to have the genuine loveliness which is characteristic of the touch of Jesus. We always know
when Jesus is at work because He produces in the commonplace something that is inspiring.
