District 308 Computer Use Guidelines
Using Computers at Home thru your ISP Internet Safety Pledge – should have with your
parent/guardian Use Windows Password Protection (especially on
admin ids and laptops) Use Operating System Protections – Windows has a
built-in firewall.– Make sure it’s turned “On”. Check it regularly!– Make sure “Automatic Updates” are turned On

TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF WHEN NOT USING IT!!!
Wireless Network Protections - If you have a wireless network in your house, make sure it’s password protected. Don’t use a neighbors unsecure network. That’s against the law!
Internet Safety Pledge Review An agreement with your Parent/Guardian for what times and
web sites you can visit DO NOT give out your PII or your Parent/Guardian’s PII DON’T setup eMail, Gaming, or Social Networking web sites
accounts without your Parent/Guardian’s knowledge– DO NOT share you password for these accounts with anyone except your
Parent/Guardian– Make sure you setup the Privacy Settings on any of these accounts
Be a good online citizen and follow proper Netiquette– Remember, just because you have a Screen Name, doesn’t mean that what
you do cannot be found out– EVERYTHING you do on the Internet is fully traceable– You can be punished at school and by law enforcement for things you do that are
against the law (for example, Cyberbulling someone) Tell a trust adult if you encounter something online that makes
you feel uncomfortable NEVER MEET A STRANGER THAT YOU’VE MET ONLINE IN
PERSON!
What is PII? Personal Identifiable Information
– Birthday– Social Security Number– Parent/Guardian Names– Full Name– Home Address– Gender– Picture of you– School Name– Parent/Guardian Place of Work– IP Address
Online Gaming and Social Networking Web Sites Like Facebook, Roblox, Xbox Live, or Twitter Use proper Privacy Setting
– Check them regularly to make sure they are still set correctlyhttp://www.getnetwise.org/videotutorials/
Only add friends you know in real life Where possible, use a Screen Name that doesn’t
disclose your PII Photo share only with friends Never post an inappropriate picture of yourself or
someone else Don’t post your future plans or whereabouts
Online Gaming and Social Networking Web Sites (continued) Use Proper Netiquette
– Don’t response or send eMails, IM, or BLOG messages when you’re angry.– It’s permanent and can’t be taken back.
You’re NOT Anonymous – Your IP Address can be tracked Screen Names or Login ID’s – pick ones that don’t disclose too
much of your PII Don’t Give Out Your PII Online (Personal Identifiable
Information)– You’re risking “Identity Theft”
Don’t Give Out Other People’s PII Tell a Trusted Adult – If you or someone you know encounters
something inappropriate NEVER MEET A STRANGER YOU MET ONLINE FACE-TO-
FACE!!!THEY’RE PROBABLY NOT WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE…
How to handle Cyberbulling NEVER respond to a rude comment Save or print evidence ALWAYS be respectful of others and use
proper Netiquette If you get upset, walk away from your
computer You can get in trouble at school or with law
enforcement for what is posted online KNOW everything that’s posted online is
traceable back to you through your IP Address
THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!!
#3 Using Computers at Public Locations For example, Public Library, Starbucks, Airport, etc. Acceptable Use Policy (Public Library) Your Internet Use is still being tracked several ways Don’t leave your computer unattended! Use Windows Password Protection
#4 Using Internet Content on School Assignments For example, web site facts, pictures, music, videos, etc.
It’s OK to do because it falls under what is known as the “Fair Use” rules for copyright laws in education
You MUST cite your sources (see the Plank LRC Writing & Research web page)
Plagiarism: The adoption or reproduction of ideas, words, or statements of another person without a Work Cited: – It’s unethical– At Plank Jr. High, it will result in a zero on assignments– In high school, you will get suspended from school and a zero on the assignment– In college, you will get expelled from school and it will ruin your academic reputation
Not all information obtained on the Internet can be trusted– For example www.wikipedia.org?
