The ADA is an equal opportunity law, guaranteeing people with disabilities the same opportunities as other Americans when it comes to: earning a living – an employer cannot discriminate against a person who has the experience, education or training required for the job, but may need changes in the job or work environment that will enable the person to do the job using public accommodations such as restaurants, movie theaters, and stores – barriers that prevent the use of such places by persons with disabilities must be removed (examples are a step-less entrance, credit card machines that can be reached independently, accessible restrooms, large-print materials) traveling by bus or railroad (some examples are that buses and trains must be accessible or have lifts to accommodate wheelchairs, stops need to be announced) taking advantage of government programs and services including those provided by other organizations paid for through government funding communicating by phone such as telephone relay service must be offered without an extra charge The ADA is a law that has been amended to keep up with the many changes we experience in technology. Our society has also discovered that many of the changes the disability community fought so hard for benefit all of us. Director: Sabine Ingerson

Time to Celebrate! By Sabine Ingerson

Our nation is going to be 238 years old. Our team is making decorations for

the ARISE float for the Oswego Fourth of July Parade. Our focus is on sharing ways our society has made strides to improve inclusion of persons with disabilities into our society.

Another big reason to celebrate is the 24th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. The ADA is an equal opportunity law, guaranteeing people with disabilities the same opportunities as other Americans when it comes to:

earning a living – an employer cannot discriminate against a person who has the experience, education or training required for the job, but may need changes in the job or work environment that will enable the person to do the job

using public accommodations such as restaurants, movie theaters, and stores – barriers that prevent the use of such places by persons with disabilities must be removed (examples are a step-less entrance, credit card machines that can be reached independently, accessible restrooms, large-print materials)

traveling by bus or railroad (some examples are that buses and trains must be accessible or have lifts to accommodate wheelchairs, stops need to be announced)

taking advantage of government programs and services including those provided by other organizations paid for through government funding

communicating by phone such as telephone relay service must be offered without an extra charge

The ADA is a law that has been amended to keep up with the many changes we experience in technology. Our society has also discovered that many of the changes the disability community fought so hard for benefit all of us.

During their July meeting the Oswego County Legislature will issue a proclamation commemorating the ADA. To celebrate the anniversary of the ADA we are inviting you to join us for a picnic lunch at our office on July 10 at noon. If you would like to attend, please contact Jen Stanard at 342-4088 ext 209 with your reservation.

I love thanking people for the great things that they do. It is one of the rewards of my job. I do not find it un-comfortable because when others come together to support us, our job becomes even that much more ful-filling in that we get to assist yet one more person. I do regret that when I say thank you, I always seem to miss out on getting everyone. So I want to do a quick blanket coverage thank you to everyone that support-ed our Ride for Ramps event this year. The event will allow us to reach out to change that many more lives because of you. “Because of you, I get to build ramps”. James Karasek, Manager of IL Services

MSC Blog Hello, my name is Danielle Bonner. I currently work as a Medicaid Service Coordinator here at ARISE. I have been employed as a Medicaid Service Coordinator since October 2013. I have been with ARISE since July 2013. My topic of choice for this month’s news-letter is that of summer safety.

The summer months are a time for fun and celebration, but let’s not forget to maintain our health and safety during this time. Independence Day is just around the cor-ner, and many of us will be actively involved in outdoor activities throughout the summer months. Whether we are around fireworks, having BBQ’s with friends and family, swim-ming, or enjoying our time in the sun, here are some safety tips to keep in mind.

One of the most popular ways to celebrate Independence Day is with fireworks. Though fireworks are exciting, it is estimated that over 200 people pay visits to the Emer-gency Room on a daily basis around the 4th of July holiday. Fireworks are illegal in the state of New York, but if you find yourself at an event where fireworks are used, please keep these safety tips in mind: 1. Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. 2.

Children should always be supervised when playing with sparklers, as temperatures can reach up to 2000 degrees! 3. Never place any part of your body in the pathway of fireworks and always back up after lighting the firework. 4. Don’t try to re-light or touch fireworks that have not ignited fully. 5. Lastly, always keep a gar-den hose or bucket of water close by in case of a fire.

Throughout the year, but mostly during the summer months, many of us like to have BBQ’s. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind when having BBQ’s this summer. 1. Thaw meat and poultry completely prior to grilling so that it cooks more evenly. Use the refrigerator to thaw slowly or microwave to thaw more quickly. If thawing in the microwave, make sure to place the food on the grill immediately, to avoid bacteria growth. 2. Always use clean utensils and platters to separate cooked and uncooked food, to avoid contamination. 3. Al-ways cook food to the minimum internal temperature to destroy harmful bacteria. Safe minimum internal tem-peratures are as follows: Whole poultry: 165 °F, Poultry breasts: 165 °F, Ground poul-try: 165 °F, Ground meats: 160 °F. Beef, pork, lamb, and veal (steaks, roasts and chops): 145 °F and allow to rest at least 3 minutes. 4. After grilling meat or poultry, maintain a temperature of 140°F or higher, until the food is consumed. 5. Refrigerate leftovers in shallow containers promptly. Discard food that has been left out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if temperatures are above 90 °F.

Swimming is one of the most popular recreational activities during the summer. There are several tips to remember while we are enjoying our time in the water. 1. Never leave children unattended while swimming! 2. Keep a phone close by where people are swimming, in case of an emergency. 3. Learn how to perform CPR and understand the basics of life-saving. 4. Always wear sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher with both UVA and UVB protection. UV exposure is most hazardous between 10 am to 4 pm. To avoid the risk of developing skin cancer, besides using sunscreen: stay in the shade when possible, wear clothing that covers arms and legs, and wear a hat and sunglasses.

May everyone have a wonderful and safe summer! Remember to stay safe while having fun. For more information on summer safety check out this website: http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Independence-Day.shtml

ARISE is pleased to announce a new event for Oswego County. On September 13th, we will be hosting our first annual “Light up the Night” run.

The run will start at dusk and runners\walkers are encouraged to use their wildest imagination to light them-selves up – use of glow sticks and lights are strongly encouraged! We look forward to seeing others that may come in costumes. Will you be a gorilla, a tiger, clown, or zombie? Parents dress up the kids to go with your theme. Light up the strollers, bring your best, and most of all, bring your dancing shoes.

We will run\walk the course, stop and dance to party music, then run\walk some more and dance again. De-tails are coming soon so, start planning now. Think outside of the box, do your best, and help us “Light up the Night”!
