The new landscape improvements for Osborn Road Complete Streets project will feature a ’Structured Southwest Arid-Oasis’ planting theme emphasizing transparency in the planting design which takes on a more structured pattern approach with a notion of repetition as a device to organize and guide travelers along the Osborn Road corridor between Hayden Road west to Scottsdale Road. The landscape plant pallet includes a combination of protect-in-place mature trees, salvaged and relocated native plants along with new plant materials influenced by the confluences of the Indian Bend Wash with its wide swath of open greenery combined with the natural Southwest Arid-Oasis plant materials of the unique urban character of downtown Scottsdale. All new, existing and salvaged plant materials within the project limits will be irrigated by a new automatic drip irrigation system. The primary street tree is the Tipu Tree (Tipuana tipu). The Tipu Tree, known for its use as a shade tree with its bright yellow summertime flowers, will frame the Osborn Road corridor and be planted in landscape rights-of-way areas adjacent to the roadway (when applicable). The Tipu Tree will be supported with secondary trees, shrubs, groundcovers and accent plants native to Arizona’s intermediate desert along with a selected mixture of subtropical plants characterized by dense greenery and rich, vibrant color. All the new plant materials are listed on the Arizona Department of Water Resources low water use drought tolerant plant list and is in compliance with the City’s DS&PM standards and design guidelines with specific attention to the unique urban character of Indian Bend Wash and downtown Scottsdale. The new landscape will function as an Urban Ecosystem incorporating sustainability principles which are integrated in the landscape design reflected in the use of water harvesting principles, low impact development (LID) components and a selective use of a natural topping of decomposed granite and angular crushed rock as ground plane surfacing materials in planting areas, swales, and berms.Hardscape aesthetic elements within the corridor will be integrated with the landscape areas. These hardscape aesthetic elements will include custom benches, trash receptacles, low retaining walls as needed and the placement of accent pavement at strategic areas and points of interest along the corridor. When possible, the design will introduce protective refuge areas for pedestrian & bike travelers.
