The moment has finally arrived! You are now an official Fayetteville State University Bronco and as your Program Director of the Student Activities Council (SAC) this year, I welcome you to the Bronco Family! As Benjamin Franklin once said “without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” Now that you’ve made it to college, keep in mind that life is a continual process. You must grow and progress so that you can become successful in life! Get involved, attend university functions and socialize to make the most of your college experience.

The Student Activities Council of Fayetteville State University is dedicated to planning, implementing and executing activities and events to enhance your college experience. Founded in 1994, SAC gives students just like you the opportunity to create events for the student body. We make all the magic happen during Welcome Week, Homecoming Week, Rodeo Week and throughout the entire academic year. It is our hope that you enjoy your time here at our illustrious institution and that you make memories that will last a lifetime.

With Bronco Pride,Dara Colón

Program Director, Student Activities Council 2013-2014

As the president of AUTOS Commuter Student Association, I welcome you to the illustrious Fayetteville State University. Since 1867, FSU has served as a hub of education for the city of Fayetteville, and as times change, the University must do so as well. Because the majority of our students here at FSU are commuters, we have a unique mission in serving more than the “typical first-time freshman.” FSU’s diverse population is comprised of working moms, both active and retired military, international students, and others from the community and surrounding areas. Inasmuch, we are committed to meeting the varied needs of ALL of FSU’s commuting students.

As we continue to strive to achieve understanding toward the off-campus student, I invite you to be a participant in this journey forward. Get involved in campus life and take advantage of all that FSU has to offer.

Sincerely, Tony WidnerPresident, AUTOS Commuter Student Association2013-2014

MANDATORY Chancellor’s Summer Reading Circle Review Session 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. You will discuss the Summer Reading Assignment, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. This session will be facilitated by Fayetteville State University faculty members.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells - taken without her knowledge in 1951 - became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. It’s a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we’re made of.
