Specimas, a Cavotec Group company , issince 1963 engineering and manufacturingcable reels, slipring assemblies andPanzerbelt ® cable protection systems forports, marine, offshore and tunnellingapplications.MacGregor Sweden was the first marinecustomer who is installing our slipringassemblies since 25 year in their shipcranes.Located 10 km from Milan, Specimasemploys 70 persons of which 15 graduatedor equivalent engineers. Specimas iscommitted to quality of the products aswell as there service. More than 30.000cable reels and slipring assemblies havebeen installed during the last 35 years.
The CertificationsSpecimas aim is to provide the highestquality , as confirmed by the ISO 9001certificate received first in 1995 fromTÜV Germany. The MPS has beenapproved by various naval registers asLloyd’s, Bureau Veritas, DNV, RINA,Germanischer Lloyds.

Since the early 1950's, Asea BrownBoveri (ABB) has been supplyingelectrical propulsion and power plantsfor half of the world's icebreakers andmany special purpose vessels built byKvaerner Masa Yard (KMY) in Finland.AC/DC power plants and the Cyclopropulsion systems were introduced byABB and KMY as a new technologyearly in 1983.New propulsion systems have beendeveloped by other large companieslike Schottel-Siemens from Germanyand Alstom from France operatingunder different names as: Azipod(registred trade name of ABB), SSPPropulsor (registered trade name ofSiemens Schottel) or Mermaid(registered trade name of Alstom).
These systems incorpo-rate an electrical motorazymuting (slewing)through 360 deginstalled inside thepod. The pod itself is
installed outside the ship’s hull.The revolutionary advantages of thesystem are:• excellent manoeuvrability and
dynamic performance as thepropeller can be directed in anydirection within 360 deg.
• space and weight savings, no longshaftlines, reduction gears, rudder
• fuel savings through improvedhydrodynamic efficiency
• low noise and vibrations by the useof optimised propeller wake field
• safety and redundancy

Two propulsion drives
AZIPOD SYSTEM
Installed on top of the ABB Azipodsystem, the MPS slipring systemallows the pod and propeller to rotatethe total 360 degrees. It’s function is to:
• Transfer power (example 3600 Amps, 1,5KV) from the diesel generators to therevolving outboard electrical motor andpropeller through brushes and rings
• Transfer auxiliary power, control signalsand data signals or optical signals fromthe pod to the control room, through silverbrushes and rings and/ or optical swiveljoint.
• Transfer hydraulic, oil, water and airnecessary for the motor through ahydraulic swivel
• Mount and support the steering anglesensors for the ship steering system andthe visual steering angle indicator
• Function as a part of the air coolingsystem of the motor

SCHOTTEL SYSTEM
Installed on the top of the Siemens-Schottel SSP System, the MPS slipringsystem allows the pod and propeller torotate the total 360 degrees.Its function is to:
• Transfer power (example 2000 Amps,1,5 KV) from the diesel generators to therevolving outboard electrical motor andpropellers through brushes and rings
• Transfer auxiliary power, control signalsand data signals from the pod to thecontrol room through brushes and ringsand/or inductive systems.
• Transfer water and air necessaryfor the motor through a hydraulic swivel
• Mount and support the steering anglesensors for the ship steering systemand the visual steering angle indicator

Specimas Cavotec's contributionto a revolutionary propulsion system
In 1999, Siemens-Schottel of Germanyplaced the first order for a similarsystem to power two TT-lines ferriesand the Costa Classica cruise liners.
With a population of over 59 MarinePropulsion Sliprings (MPS) installedall over the world, in different type ofships from cruise liners, to ice-breakers, ferries, military ships, etc,Specimas – Cavotec is today the onlysupplier able to offer a completesystem combining electrical, data andhydraulic transmission.
The reliability of the system is vitaland the 24/24 hours service,availability is part of our strength toserve our customers navigating whereever, from Barrents Sea to the CoralSea, from the North Sea to Panama,or from the Chinese Sea to theTasmanian Sea.
In the early 90's, ABB Marine andKvaerner Masa Yard of Finlandapproached Specimas for a R & Dstudy concerning the power, data andhydraulic transmission for a revolutionaryship propulsion system using anoutboard electrical motor instead of thetraditional on line shaft inboard dieselpowered propulsion.The 360 degrees manoeuvrabilityrequires the installation of a slipringunit able to transmit up to 4000 Ampsat 3 kV, data - control through opticalfibers, or conventional rings and aspecial multi chanel swivel for billage,oil, grease and air.
After 3 years of tests and studies firston the Lunni ice breaking oil tankerand after that on the Botnica, in 1995we received the first orders for theFantasy Class Carnival Corporation,M/S Paradise and Elation.
The R & D and technical officesare fully dedicated to the development
and manufacturing of theMPS slipring system.
The offices are equipped with 7 CADstations using Hewlett Packard ME10 and Pro-engineering 3D software.

The MPS slipring system is suppliedin an IP 44 heavy robust steelhousing for marine use and is pre-wired with cables or hoses accordingto the customer request.

Applications
The MPS sliprings are installed atthe stern of the ship and according tothe application can be single or twin,centrally located , or port andstarboard side.
Designed ,manufactured andtested to resist toforces of 5 G or moreand strong vibrations,the MPS slipring is avital component tothe ship reliability.

In this photo of the main electrical control room, the “brain “ of the ship ,we can see how the MPS slipring system is integrated in the propulsion system of the shipin order to insure 100% reliability on a ship carrying around 2500 passengers and crew.

Reliable, proven and with long practical experience:59 sliprings (March 31st 2001 ), with some sliprings having been inoperation over 24.000 hours.
Complete package supplied on request: power, auxiliary power, control,data transfer, hydraulics, air cooling, steering angle sensing devices,pipes, cables pre-wired and connectors.
Easy and low maintenance with self cleaning brushes and rings.
Fast replacement of rings or brushes ,in case of necessity,without dismounting the complete slipring assembly.
Big tolerances, allowing for vertical and angular brushmovements due to movements in the pod structure.
No metal to metal contact with wear, no risk of brushes getting stuck orbent due to movement in the pod structure, heat expansion or vibrations.
The vertical rings do not accumulate dirt as the horizontal plate rings do.
