...FOR BUSINESSFor so long the UK has waited to see confidence returning to both businesses and consumers.

Individual businesses have pulled out of the recession, but it takes more than one piece of good news to create the momentum to increase confidence.

We are seeing that now.

Investment and developmentFirst the installation of Damien Hirst’s Verity drew international attention and attracted more visitors to the area.

Now there are signs of even more investment and development:

➤ £3.5 million investment by JD Wetherspoon

➤ £2.5 million investment in facilities at Twitchen House holiday park

➤ New art galleries, independent shops and pubs

➤ International cruise liner visit ➤ Proposed 750-home Ilfracombe

southern extensionWith many UK coastal communities in decline, this level of activity demonstrates real progress.

Changing perceptionsCombe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe need this investment and also need to change perceptions . . . of people in our own communities, across North Devon and further afield.

With Woolacombe’s award-winning beaches, Ilfracombe’s picturesque harbour and Combe Martin’s location next to Exmoor, quality of life here is second to none.

Add investment, a forward-looking business community and soon, we hope, superfast broadband, and there will be no better place to run a business.

We need to tell the world that we are . . . OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

Promote, debate and connectThe directors of COMBEbusiness welcome you to the Landmark Theatre to promote your businesses, debate key business issues and, most importantly, make new business connections.

We have so many opportunities ahead.

Clare Flint • Sarah Lock Paul Yabsley • Robert Zarywacz

EVENT

Event dedication The idea for OPEN FOR BUSINESS came from the late Tim Cox, COMBEbusiness co-founder and director.

Tim worked tirelessly to support businesses. He produced the business case for our successful Big Lottery Fund grant to fund our ground-breaking Get Started, Keep Going programme of business training and mentoring, since adopted by other North Devon organisations.

The directors of COMBEbusiness are pleased to dedicate OPEN TO BUSINESS to the memory of Tim Cox.

CONFERENCE

Conference and speaker timetableTimes and speakers are correct at time of going to press and subject to change.

10.40 – Opening SessionWhy OPEN FOR BUSINESS? Looking forward to the day’s events.

11.10 – Inward investment – why invest or start a business here? Many UK seaside communities have a bleak future, but Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe appear well positioned to develop their economies through exploiting their natural assets and the ‘balanced’ lifestyle many entrepreneurs seek. How can we make the most of this potential? What investment is needed? Where will it come from?

➤ Tim Jones, Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership ➤ Geoff Burge – TDK-Lambda UK

12.10 – Manufacturing SuccessTDK-Lambda UK is a unit of the TDK Corporation, a leading global electronics company, and is now Britain’s largest designer and manufacturer of both standard and configurable AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies. TDK-Lambda UK is one of North Devon’s manufacturing success stories and this session will demonstrate how hi-tech manufacturing is undertaken in Ilfracombe.

➤ Geoff Burge and Tim Puttick – TDK-Lambda UK

2.10 – Remote control – exporting rural goods and services to urban marketsWhere are your clients? Do you sell across the country or internationally? Is your business location independent? Broadband internet is a valuable tool for businesses in remote areas, enabling them to extend their reach without relying on transport infrastructure. How can this technology boost business in this area?

➤ Paul Coles – BT South West Regional Partnerships Director ➤ Paul Hopkinson – Flint Hosts ➤ Robert Zarywacz – Zarywacz

3.10 – Ilfracombe southern extensionPlans for a 750-house southern extension to Ilfracombe include a new primary school, extensive open space, sports pitches, parkland, woodland, allotments and playspace. The site will be developed during a 10-15 year period, during which 100 construction jobs will be created each year. An estimated further 140 jobs would be created and after completion another 365 permanent jobs would be secured within the hub. Another 110 jobs would be permanently created within the locality as a result of the development. This session will outline this exciting development.

➤ Matthew Lappin – David Lock Associates

4.00 – Thank you and conference closeWe hope you have enjoyed the OPEN FOR BUSINESS conference.
