grow your

to be a successful vegetable gardener you need some basic

knowledge and the right location. The best spot to grow your edibles is in full sun, with a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight. The more sun the better the garden. To build a great garden you need a good foundation. Most edibles thrive in rich soil that is well drained. My preferred mixture incorporates compost, manure, and loam. To create the perfect vegetable garden I recommend building a raised garden with a soil depth of 14 to 16 inches. Raised gardens reduce weeding and are less strain on the back. They can be built using almost any material, but beware of pressure treated lumber as the treatment may leach into the soil. No space? No problem! As long as you have sun and room

by Frankie FlowersSo you want to grow your own this year? Why not! Growing your own fruits and vegetables is good for you, and studies have shown homeowners who grow their own are healthier than those who do not garden. Just imagine arriving home from a long day and enjoying a fresh salad, or my personal favourite — a toasted tomato sandwich!

own eats

www.onthego.to 19

Page 22: ONtheGO Magazine May 2013

for a container, you can grow edibles. Basil, rosemary, parsley, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and radishes can all be grown in a pot. The only requirements are that your containers need to have drainage and the right soil. Garden soils are too heavy and will keep plants wet for too long, whereas potting soils and container soils absorb and dry out easily and are a must for container edibles. Grow what you eat. Too often people decide to grow weird and wacky edibles they don’t really use. If you don’t eat that many tomatoes don’t plant too many. Remember that one tomato plant should produce enough tomatoes to feed a family of four.

Pay attention to space. Some edibles get big quickly. Watch out for perennial edibles that get out of hand! Never plant mint in the garden as mint can easily become an invasive plant taking over your entire space. My rule: Mint should only ever be grown in a pot. Some vegetables need extra care. Many tomato varieties require staking and the removal of “suckers” during the growing season for optimum yields. Squash type plants should be monitored for powdery mildew. Strawberries need winter covering after the growing

season. Know the needs of your various different plants.

Watering: Edibles should never be watered at night. The best time to water any garden is in the morning. Always remember to water the roots and not the leaves. Overhead watering increases disease and can be harmful to the plant.

Fertilizing: If you have good soil with great nutrients then fertilizer may not be necessary. I usually recommend amending edible gardens with sheep manure in fall and spring. For those who have poor soils or grow edibles in containers my favourite fertilizer is water soluble 20-20-20.

Harvesting: Remove it even if you don’t use it! Never let your herbs go to flower or seed. Rotten edibles, herbs gone to seed, and weeds are all signs of a forgotten vegetable garden. Remember there are low maintenance gardens but never a NO-maintenance garden. One final tip: Frankie Flowers “Get Growing” outlines the vegetable garden season by season and even has a harvest guide. Availablemost places books are sold.

Taking place every second Saturday of the month, from May until

September, guests to the market will enjoy a vibrant, colourful outdoor oasis while they shop the stalls of Ontario-based flower growers. An advocate of Ontario floriculture, the Toronto Flower Market is working with pickOntario, the marketing initiative managed by Flowers Canada (Ontario) Inc., to create awareness about locally grown flower varieties and the benefits of purchasing locally grown products, as well as providing an opportunity to interact directly with growers. There are over 200 greenhouse flower producers in Ontario, employing more than 10,000 people. Ontario growers abide by the strictest production regulations and are considered to be among the best producers in the world, using the latest technology and growing

This spring will mark the launch of the Toronto Flower Market at 99 Sudbury (99 Sudbury St.), with the inaugural market happening on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featuring an abundance of fresh cut, potted and bedding flower varieties sourced directly from Ontario greenhouses, the Toronto Flower Market will offer a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for urban dwellers looking for high-quality and affordable plants and flowers.

techniques. Ontario growers produce more than 80 varieties of cut flowers and 120 varieties of potted plants. “Ontario-grown cut and potted flowers not only have an increased life span, look great and are grown locally, but every purchase also helps to drive the economic future of the floriculture industry in Canada. We are thankful and very excited to be a part of this new venture with the Toronto Flower Market,” said Nikki Gomes, Marketing Director at Flowers Canada (Ontario) Inc.

Purchasing locally grown flowers guarantees that the customer gets the

freshest product possible, which will last longer than a non-local product. Buying local also offers a more environmentally sustainable option compared to products that have been flown or shipped from outside of Canada.

The Toronto Flower Market at 99 sudbury Café will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: May 11, June 8, July 13, august 10, september 14

without a doubt a city is nothing without the people who live within

in it. Markham itself is home to over 310,000 residents, each from many different backgrounds. The city of Markham proudly works to promote unity for all of its citizens with their Diversity Action Plan. There are also numerous programs and organizations that have been created to address the individual needs of each group that make up the city’s population. Known for being Canada’s high-tech

Find YoursElF inmarkhamby Alana Anderson Everyone knows Canada’s biggest cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, and of course Toronto; yet what people often overlook are the smaller cities that many of us call home. The Greater Toronto Area boasts some of the most amazing and small towns and cities in Ontario. It’s these places that house our communities, our families, our workplaces, and our histories. These are the things that continue to feed the diversity of our province’s capital. The Greater Toronto Area is an ever-growing area in development, culture, and community, and one of the best representations of this is the beautiful city of Markham, Ontario.

capital, Markham is the home to over 900 technological and scientific facilities. Markham is also the proud recipient of the 2010 Canadian Award for Excellence. People from all over the GTA come to Markham for a unique experience you just can’t find anywhere else. It’s nearly impossible to be bored if you live here because of its interesting heritage districts, endless shopping opportunities, scenic parks and world-class entertainment. Winning many

awards and with all the attractions the city has to brag about, Markham’s citizens have even more to be proud about. Initiatives like the Downtown Rejuvenation Project have been set up to revamp Downtown Unionville, creating 16,000 jobs and hopefully bringing in thousands of new residents. The Markham Stouffville Hospital has seen many improvements recently as it expands to accommodate the ever-growing population. And aside from Markham’s already well known malls and shopping centres like Pacific Mall, Market Village, and the GTA Centre, the Montogomery High St. area is being turned into one of the GTA’s premier retail areas. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a place to learn, work, explore, socialize, or just live your life; Markham is the place. A city that will always welcome you with open arms if you plan to stay for one day or the rest of your life.

There is indeed, and that’s where the expert care of a licensed Mortgage Broker can be the life saver you’re looking for.

Mortgage Brokers work for you, so they can offer more options than any one mortgage lender. Plus mortgage lenders — like MCAP — only work with brokers who have been thoroughly vetted and have a valid broker licence. They not only help find the best deal for you, they stay at your side every step of the way. There are four main advantages to using a mortgage broker: choice, advice, service and savings.

cHOice: Only Mortgage Brokers can provide the wide range of mortgage products from various lenders to meet your specific financial needs.

aDvice: Mortgage Brokers offer alternatives in selecting a mortgage product and other financial services that are best suited for your situation.

Service: Mortgage Brokers work with your schedule and are there with you from the first meeting to the final close.

SavinGS: Mortgage Brokers save you money by providing – on average – lower interest rates. According to a study* conducted by the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals, home owners who renewed or renegotiated with a Mortgage Broker reported an average rate decrease of 1.4% compared with 1.0% among all renewers.

These four reasons are also why mortgage lenders like MCAP work solely through a national network of trained professional Mortgage Brokers. MCAP and other independent mortgage lenders know that a Mortgage Broker will help make a home purchase or renewed mortgage a positive experience for everyone. If you’re thinking about buying your first home this spring, looking to renew your current mortgage or are curious if there is a better deal out there for your current mortgage, talk to a licensed Mortgage Broker today and find out what they can do for you!

*CAAMP January 2011 study – Canadian Mortgage Channel: Industry Perceptions Consumer and Broker

Whether it’s your first time or your fifth time, shopping for a mortgage can often be confusing and even frustrating. Besides, who really has the time to research and compare mortgage lenders to ensure the best deal, especially during spring’s traditionally fast-paced housing bidding-wars market? Then there are all those crazy terms and acronyms — beacon scores, lTVs, irds and porting – it can make your head spin! isn’t there an easier way?

HoW Can ahome inspectionHElp a sEllEr?most buyers out there wouldn’t dream of going ahead and

purchasing a home without a formal home inspection.

Smart home sellers can take advantage of this fact by having a professional home inspector thoroughly examine their house, before

putting it up for sale.

A professional pre-listing home inspection will disclose any major deficiencies in the home’s physical structure, such as the roof, basement, foundation, walls & ceilings, electrical, plumbing, heating or cooling systems. Should any serious problems be found, sellers may then choose to have them fixed before marketing to prospective buyers.

Another way, if the pre-listing inspection turns up major problems, is for the seller to set a more realistic asking price. In addition to that, the inspector’s written report can be a sales tool, providing sellers with unbiased documentation of all their home’s good features. Buyers may feel more confident in making an offer as well knowing the home may very well be the right one for them and their families.

The right real estate agent should guide you into the right direction and provide a home inspector for you that will conduct the proper inspection and protect your investment.

May is National Electrical Safety month south of the border. It might not be an official Canadian event, but since most home renovations involve some electrical work, electrical safety is always a top priority.

electrical saFety

By Mike Holmes

i don’t do my own electrical work. And neither should you or anyone else who isn’t an

electrician. The worst renovation nightmares I’ve seen involve bad electrical work. Why? Because it endangers lives and your home’s safety. Bad wiring jobs can lead to overloaded circuits, buried junc-tions boxes, unsafe connections — to name a few — which can all lead to an electrical fire. I know some contractors

and handymen offer to “do the electrical” as part of the job — to help homeowners save some money. But they usually save money by cutting corners, like not getting the proper permit. Is it worth the risk to save a few dollars? Absolutely not. For any renovation, all electrical work must be done right before the drywall goes up. If not, dangerous mistakes can be hidden in your walls — potential disasters just waiting to happen. And remember to think ahead. What will you need in the future? Do you have enough outlets? Are they located where you need them? This is especially important when it comes to kitchen renovations. Or let’s say you want a hot tub. You might not be able to afford it now, but now’s the time to plan for it. The average home today needs at least 100 amps. But you might want to upgrade to 200 amps, depending on your plans.

www.onthego.to 37

Page 40: ONtheGO Magazine May 2013

otg | homE

A complete overhaul of your home’s wiring is expensive. But sometimes all you need are a few simple upgrades — usually minimum code requirements, like installing ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) near water sources and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) in bedrooms. GFCIs should always be installed in outdoor outlets, bathrooms, kitchens, crawl spaces and unfinished basements. They’re inexpensive and could save your life. Let me give you a scenario: A bare wire inside an appliance touches the metal case. The case is now charged with electricity. If you touch the appliance with one hand and a grounded metal object, like a water faucet, with your other hand you will get a bad shock — it can even kill you. But if the appliance is plugged into a GFCI outlet, the GFCI will sense the change in current and shut the power off. Another thing to keep in mind is to never alter plugs to make them fit into an outlet. It’s a huge safety hazard. If they don’t fit it’s for a reason. If you can’t plug an appliance into an

outlet, the outlet is probably outdated. Always have a qualified electrician replace your outlets. It takes years of training to become a licensed electrician. Why would you trust anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing? Or someone who knows just enough to mess it up? If you need electrical work done, always call a licensed professional — and get a permit! No exceptions. Because when you make it right, you make it safe.

Assuming you know what vehicle you want to buy, the next question to consider is, buy from whom; a private seller, or a dealer?

Buying privately has inherent risk; none of Ontario’s consumer protection laws apply to private transactions, so if this is the route you choose, get educated! Learn how to spot a curbsider (an illegal dealer of cars); ask to see the seller’s ID and make sure the car is registered to him/her; if it’s not, don’t listen to excuses — run away — fast! Ask to see the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) from the Ministry of Transportation. The UVIP lists previous owners and odometer readings and indicates any registered liens. By law, the seller is supposed to provide a UVIP. Check it. Are all the pages there? Has it been altered? Read it carefully. As well, many private sellers fail to disclose, or simply don’t know about, previous accident damage, so buy a vehicle history report like CarProof or Carfax and have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic you trust. If the seller won’t allow it, run. Purchasing from a registered dealer is unquestionably the safer way to buy. All Ontario dealers are governed by OMVIC, the industry regulator, and must abide by the Motor Vehicle

buying a car? protect yourselF.Many of us have a “relationship” with our car. We love them, heaping untold attention (and money) on the curved glass and sculptured metal that is the object of our affection. Others are indifferent; their car is simply a means of transportation not linked in any way to their self-identity. And some … well they hate, even loath their rides … an unhealthy relationship to be sure. But whether you’re an afficionado or just a daily commuter, one emotion many of us share is nervousness, perhaps even dread, when it’s time to buy that new ride or new love of our life. This is when a little knowledge can help overcome any anxiety and ensure that new car/owner relationship starts down the right road.

Dealers Act, Consumer Protection Act and a stringent Code of Ethics. These regulations require dealers provide full disclosure of the past-use and condition of vehicles including if a vehicle was previously involved in a collision that resulted in more than $3,000 damage. Dealers who breach any of these regulations can face serious penalties including fines, loss of licence or even jail time. OMVIC’s website (omvic.on.ca) provides details of dealers who have been convicted or disciplined for breaching the Acts or Code of Ethics. Fortunately, these dealers are the minority; most provide exceptional service and products in an effort to build trust and a lasting relationship with their customers. But even buying from a dealer requires consumers to educate themselves: consumers should know they’re entitled to all-in price advertising. Dealers cannot add additional fees, other than HST or licensing, to the advertised price — and yes signs on the vehicle itself are considered advertisements. Recently, some consumers have complained dealers added “mandatory” fees for products/services the dealer had pre-installed on the vehicle, such as anti-theft products or nitrogen filled tires.

According to OMVIC Manager of Communications Terry O’Keefe, “the only mandatory charge required by regulation or law is HST; dealers may also seek reimbursement for the cost of licensing the vehicle on the purchaser’s behalf. If a dealer claims a pre-installed product is mandatory and the consumer doesn’t find it has value and doesn’t want it, tell the

dealer. If the dealer refuses to remove the charge or adjust the price, the consumer should walk away and shop elsewhere, but do so before signing a contract”. And what if the dealer tries to add charges for pre-installed products/services after the consumer has negotiated a price? “This could be seen as a breach of MVDA, CPA or Code of Ethics,” explained O’Keefe. “Savvy car shoppers can avoid it by making it clear at the time they are negotiating that they are negotiating the final drive-away price and that they won’t consider any additional charges other than HST and licensing, unless it’s for an optional product or service the consumer agrees to purchase”. So, whether you’re shopping for that new sexy set of wheels privately or a new daily commuter at your local dealer, know your rights; and don’t get emotional, get informed.

while many of his clients go to him for obedience training,

he also has many who are seeking protection training, be it for home protection or as a hobby. A lot of the dogs we saw that day were “working dogs” (dogs that are bred to do a specific job). The clients we filmed with meet with Glen regularly, and for the most part consider protection training to be a hobby. We have to admit, we were nervous to watch as Glen put on the “arm” — the big sleeve you see the “attacker” wearing in these types of demonstrations. However, it was very exciting to watch. The tracking was just as fascinating; we watched a Hovawart, a German breed used to protect estates, demonstrate tracking. Ozzie was a gregarious guy who was excited to go to work! His owner participates weekly in Glen’s tracking sessions. On the windy, rainy day we went to film with them, Ozzie hit the ground

Jen Mitchell & Laura Ducharme

We were interested in learning more about protection and tracking training for dogs, so we decided to film an episode of Fido & Wine with Glen from Team K9. As a long-time dog owner and trainer, he has developed a unique program which can help you have the dog you’ve always wanted. Glen believes that almost any dog can be trained to behave as we would like them to — as long as they have dedicated owners and a good trainer.

with his nose, and away he went “on scent” for 300 meters to find our decoy (one of the other group members). It was hard to keep up with Oz as he enjoys his job so much that he runs to the goal. It makes sense because one third of a dog’s brain is dedicated to smell. The olfactory bulb in the brain is near the emotional part of the brain. That’s why you will see dogs wag their tail when they are on a scent. Apparently, a dog can track a scent from the time they are just a week old. A smell can trigger meaning, memory and emotional connections. Tracking dogs are used to find missing persons, explosives, firearms, drugs, bed bugs and disease — so let your dog take a good whiff in the outdoors to build up reserves of sensory cells and brain connections! TEAM-K9 will work with customers all over the GTA — including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville. www.team-k9.com

The convenience of jumping rope is why I am particularly fond of

this exercise. You can jump rope virtually anywhere and most importantly indoors, in your home. Often when I am giving fitness advice to a person that is extremely busy I recommend as soon as your feet touch the ground from the bed, to put on your tennis shoes and start jump roping. This also applies to those who frequently travel for work. You need very little space and equipment in order to jump rope.

For those of you who are on a budget and can’t afford a gym membership or group fitness classes, a jump rope is by far one of the most cost effective pieces of fitness equipment. Most drug stores or sports shops sell a few brands of jump ropes for less than ten dollars. That’s a very

To get you ready for summer and bikini season it’s essential to keep up with your fitness regimen. One of the most convenient, cost effective, and calorie burning exercises is jumping rope.

small investment to improve your health and help you on the road to losing weight.

Jumping rope is excellent cardio-vascular work that strengthens your heart, and burns up to 120 calories in just ten minutes. It’s a great way to give you energy in the morning to get your day going, or release stress at the end of a busy work day. A full body workout from head to toe that will make you feel and look incredible.

As this spring season winds down and we go into summertime don’t neglect your health and fitness regimen. A sure fire way to stay healthy and in shape is to jump rope. Jumping Rope is convenient, cost effective, and a calorie burner. Have fun and don’t forget to jump!

may 21 - june 21 - With a sudden realization of your dreams, the time has come to rebuild your ideologies. Your imagination is endless and you can do anything you would like to with your life. Make it as great as possible! Now is a great time to reignite the spark within you.

june 22 - july 23 - It doesn’t matter if the past was good or bad; most people are attached to it in one way or another. If you find that the past is influencing your life directly or indirectly you do not have to worry. In May you’ll be able to break free of its hold on you. You’ll finally be able to breathe freely.

july 24 - august 23 - Marital or relationship issues; that will be your focus. You must remember to keep calm and maintain a clear mind otherwise this could take a turn for the worst. Change is very important, but you must learn to stay in one place for an appropriate amount of time before making your move.

august 24 - september 22 - Your forecast is directed towards your career. You’ll need to focus on your leadership skills, point of view, independence, character and mental power. You could be travelling more than usual for work and conducting seminars, workshops and conferences.

september 23 - october 22 - Try not to be so possessive when it comes to your friends or a partner. The growth of love and companionship should be filled with happiness and joy, not tension and concern. Love can be a huge responsibility so treat it with care and respect.

october 23 - november 22 - Routine has become boring. You may be looking for a change whether it comes within your career, love life or your life in general. Find yourself again, because the moment you decide to make a change your life will become more interesting and you will find your calling.

november 23 - december 20 - Do you feel like a bundle of energy? You’re going to need space and activity in order to feel good. To help you expend some of this energy you will need to exercise! Eat healthy while you fall into an exercise routine and you will feel better than you ever have before.

december 21 - january 20 - You desire some recognition for all of your efforts and you have the ability of creativity to allow you to make your desires come true. Try being more sociable and friendlier than usual. This will allow people to get to know you better and appreciate your ideas and goals.

january 21 - february 19 - Being very optimistic can sometimes hurt rather than help. Your level optimism may cause you to miscalculate, overlook and exaggerate the road to success. The list of responsibilities can become problematic because you are disconnected and have no interest in them.

feBruary 20 - march 20 - You sometimes require companionship more than others. Do not be afraid to surround yourself with friends and loved ones. Don’t worry about appearing clingy, concentrate on your happiness and love for those around you instead of becoming withdrawn and quiet.

march 21 - april 19 - You may run into some conflicts with your partner or a close friend. Do not be afraid to ask for advice and try to be creative when resolving an issue. Once you show a more sensitive side to your personality your friends will flock to your side.
