Second dam and quality sprinter Sweet Fervor won

the 2007 Shirley Jones Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr.

graded stakes winner and sire Concerto; grade III win-

ner Illusioned, who is a grade I-placed sprinter; and to

1999 Florida Derby (r. I) runner-up Wondertross.

An April 15 foal, the filly was bred in Kentucky by

Lane's End owner William S. Farish and Kilroy Thor-

oughbred Partnership. BH

DAY'S TOP FILLY ALSO BY QUALITY ROADBy Myra Lewyn

Agent Ben McElroy secured the highest-priced filly

during the Sept. 20 sixth session of the Keeneland

September yearling sale when he went to $280,000

for a daughter from the third crop of Quality Road.

Lane's End's agency presented the bay filly, whose

price was the day's fifth-highest. She is the first foal

out of the unraced Bernardini mare Lemon Bay. The

mare is a half sister to Tiz So Sweet (by Tiznow), the

runner-up in the restricted Summer Colony Stakes

Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course.

Ben McElroy went to $280,000 for a Quality Road filly in Keeneland's sixth session

'TRANSITIONAL DAY' SEES MARKET DECLINESBy Myra Lewyn

On what Keeneland director of sales Geoffrey

Russell called a "transitional day," the opening

session of Keeneland September's two-day Book 3

Sept. 20 saw declines in gross, average, and median

versus the 2014 Book 3 opener.

For Sunday's session 266 yearlings changed hands

for $19,618,000, down 7.3% from the previous year's

total for 273 yearlings on the first day of Book 3.

Average price dropped 4.9% from $77,553 a year ago

to $73,752, and median fell sharply—from $70,000 in

2014 to $55,000, a decline of 21%. The buy-back rate

was 28%.

"It was kind of a transitional day of people arriving

and people leaving," Russell said. "It started off very

slow, gathered momentum during the afternoon,

and finished up very well."

Cumulatively, when comparing the first six days

with the 2014 auction's first seven days due to Book

1's format change this year—the 2015 auction is run-

ning ahead in terms of average and median prices,

up 3.2% and 8.3%, respectively. BH

AT MIDWAY POINT, FERGUSON TOPS BUYERSBy Evan Hammonds

Through six of 12 sessions, the leading buyers'

list is populated with familiar names, which is to

be expected

at the upper

echelon of

the Keene-

land Septem-

ber market.

Leader

John Fergu-

son spent

$8,235,000

for 24 year-

lings in the

first two

books. The figures are very similar to last year when

he purchased 22 yearlings for $7,880,000. Interest-

ingly, he did not stretch to seven figures for any of

his 2015 purchases.

A major player who has stepped up his game is J.J.

Crupi's New Castle Farm. The Florida horseman also

led all other buyers at the Fasig-Tipton July sale and

was the third-leading buyer at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga.

Through the first six sessions at September he is the

second-leading buyer by spending $6,275,000. Last

year he spent $4,812,000 for 17 yearlings.

Newcomers to the top 10 list were Brad Kelley's

Calumet Farm and Zayat Stables. Calumet purchased

16 yearlings for $3,110,000, spending no more than

$350,000 per head. Zayat Stables, of course, race

2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. BH

LUCKY LINDY'S STOCK ON THE RISEBy Jeremy Balan

Augustin Stable's Lucky Lindy broke through in a

major way Sept. 20, taking the $150,000 Ontario

Derby (Can-III) at Woodine. The Harlan's Holiday colt

stalked the pace, took command

at the top of the stretch, and

kicked clear with ease to take

the 1 1/8-mile event on Wood-

bine's synthetic main track by 3

3/4 lengths. It was his first victo-

ry against winners after breaking

his maiden at Woodbine in June.

Lucky Lindy has been in-

volved in every one of his races

since breaking his maiden, but

his last three starts before the

Ontario Derby were all on turf,

including a third-place finish in

the $500,000 Breeders' Stakes.

"He had some 2-year-old

issues, so it took just a little

longer," trainer Mark Frostad said. "He was a little

backward. He's coming along beautifully and his best

racing days are ahead of him. We're looking forward

to a serious 4-year-old year and hopefully beyond.

Hopefully we can get to Gulfstream this winter and

make an impact there." BH

Ric Waldman, and trainer Paul McGee were shop-

ping in earnest. They had picked up four in Book

2 late and landed one early on Sunday.

"It's strong," said Siegel, who scours Book 2

and 3 for qualified candidates and doesn't have a

specific number she'll buy. "The foal crop is down

and there are plenty of funds out here for the

good horse."

"Consignors feel it's spotty and that there are

not enough buyers to catch all the horses," Wald-

man said. "In Book 1 there were a lot of horses

that didn't belong, and that hurts consignors. You

have to make enough on the peanuts to make up

for what you lose on the popcorn." BH

SIGNS OF STABILITYBy Ian Tapp

Early in Book 1 of this year's Keeneland Septem-

ber sale, the wise-guy analysis was that it wasn't

quite as strong as 2014. After all, if you go from

four Book 1 days to three and reduce the size of

Book 1's catalog by 5.2%, doesn't that mean the

quality is more concentrated and, therefore, Book

1 prices should be that much higher? Theoreti-

cally, yes, but a truly accurate comparison would

require fixing the yearling quality from year to

year, which isn't how things work in reality.

Book 1 average and median did increase—by

0.9% and 4.2%, respectively—though not quite

5.2%. But it would be premature to judge the sale

solely on those numbers, particularly because the

new format had an impact beyond Book 1.

This year's first Book 2 session followed a dark

day that gave buyers more time to inspect and vet

potential purchases. Keeneland officials hoped

the extra day would allow buyers to regroup and

refocus on the next round of offerings. Based on

feedback from buyers and consignors, the strate-

gy seemed to work well.

The effect on the pace of the overall auction

can be seen in the chart below, which plots 50-hip

moving averages of sale prices in 2014-15. Each

sold horse is ordered in sequence by hip number;

RNAs and outs were excluded.

In 2014 there was an abrupt drop-off in sales

average after the four Book 1 sessions. The turn

in the 2014 sale can be seen in the cliff beginning

around the 450th yearling (473 Book 1 yearlings

sold last year). By comparison, the transition this

year was more gradual. While the decline in av-

erage prices began earlier (443 horses—30 fewer

than in 2014—sold in Book 1), prices at this point

in the sale might have been buoyed by the logisti-

cal advantages provided by the rest day.

Through the first 1,100 horses sold, the av-

erage of $194,779 is virtually unchanged from

the same point last year. The median price of

$145,000 is marginally better than $140,000 a year

ago.

The breakdown of hips by price category is

also similar. Yearlings bringing $500,000 or more

accounted for 6.1%—the same percentage as last

year. The amount selling for $250,000-$499,000

was up 1.8% this year to 22%. And the number of

$100,000-$249,000 yearlings was up 0.4% to 39%.

Is the market stronger than last year? Perhaps

ever so slightly from a nominal perspective, but if

you were to factor in inflation, the two years are

more or less identical. While the numbers don't

indicate a stronger yearling market in 2015, they

do suggest stability, and that should be a welcome

sight for Thoroughbred investors. BH
