ALL THE WAY VICTORY FOR BRADESTERBy Jeremy Balan
Joseph Sutton's Bradester fired his best shot June
18 to earn his first grade I victory in the $500,000
Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs.
The speedy 6-year-old son of Lion Heart set the
pace, with fractions of :23.64, :47.58, and 1:11.67
through six furlongs in the 1 1/8-mile test and held
off a closing drive from last by Eagle to win by a half-
length.
In his first victory at the distance, Bradester hit
the wire in 1:48.85 under the guidance of jockey Joe
Bravo and paid $20.40 to win at odds of 9-1. Majestic
Harbor finished a game third and 3-5 favorite Effinex
came in sixth in the seven-horse field, a length ahead
of International Star.
“He’s a pretty fun horse. He does all the hard work
for you," Bravo said. "He kind of reminds me of his
father Lion Heart, who I rode in the Haskell (gr. I). I
just kind of rode him like his dad and you saw what
he did today.”

LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMTRAINER ROBERTSON SENDS OUT 1,000TH WINNER Thunder and Honey won the seventh race at Canterbury Park June 18 and provided trainer Mac Robertson his 1,000th victory.
APPRENTICE CLAWSON RIDES FIRST WINNER AT CD Apprentice jockey Katie Clawson guided Street Thunder, owned by Tom Grether Farms and trained by Kellyn Gorder, to a victory in the fifth race at Churchill Downs June 17 for the first victory of her career.
Eagle, who won the Ben Ali Stakes (gr. III) at
Keeneland, trailed by eight lengths early and made
his move in the final turn, but had to fan nine wide
entering the stretch and just missed.
“He ran hard. I wish we’d have got there," said Ea-
gle's jockey, Brian Hernandez Jr. "We were just a little
late. I mean, coming from that far back, he ran a big
race. He did all we can ask for. We just weren’t lucky
enough to get the bob today.”
The Foster score was Bradester's fifth graded vic-
tory and ninth win overall from 23 starts for trainer
Eddie Kenneally. In his 2016 debut May 21, Bradester
also won wire to wire in the Majestic Light Stakes at
Monmouth Park. In 2015 he won the Monmouth Cup
Stakes (gr. II) and Salvator Mile Stakes (gr. III), both
at Monmouth, and in 2014 he scored in the Ack Ack
Handicap (gr. III) and Mineshaft Handicap (gr. III).
Saturday's win also pushed his earnings over
$1.05 million.
"He’s won five or six graded stakes prior to today,
but to win a grade I with him is phenomenal," Ken-
neally said. "Now he has established himself. He is a
beautiful horse, so now he’s got credentials to be a
stallion, hopefully, at some point in his career here in
Kentucky and I think he’s earned that right." BH

NO LEAD, NO PROBLEM FOR SONGBIRDBy Jeremy Balan
It finally happened. Someone took the lead early
from Songbird.
The result, however, was the same.
Bellamentary, who broke just to the inside of the
undefeated champion 2-year-old filly in the $200,000
Summertime Oaks (gr. II) June 18 at Santa Anita Park,
assumed command in the 1 1/16-mile race entering
the first turn, but the lead was short-lived.
Fox Hill Farms' Songbird tracked in second, some-
thing she has never done in her seven prior starts,
moved alongside and put a head in front midway
through the backstretch, and left her competitors in
the dust the rest of the way without any asking from
jockey Mike Smith.
“It scares me to think of how good she is," Smith
said. "I try not to think of it."
The winning margin was 6 1/2 lengths—Bellamen-
tary just held on for second, a nose ahead of closing
Kay Kay—but it might as well have been 20 for the
Jerry Hollendorfer trainee. After racing a length off
Bellamentary through a first quarter in :22.97, Song-
bird pulled within a head after a half in :45.95. The
champ had a two-length lead as six furlongs went
in 1:10.28, and Smith sat unmoving in the saddle
through a mile in 1:35.71 and hit the wire in 1:42.63.
"She stayed in the spot that she wanted to be,
cruising alongside of her and it’s just amazing, her
cruising speed," Smith said. "She started lengthening
her stride on the backside, and I looked over at Bel-
lamentary and I knew we were comfortable, but that
she was having trouble keeping up."
In her first start since a low-grade fever knocked
her out of consideration for the Longines Kentucky
Oaks (gr. I), Songbird paid $2.10 across the board.
Bellamentary brought $2.40 and $2.10, and Kay Kay
delivered $3.40 to show. That's a Lady finished an
even fourth, followed by Sutton's Smile, to complete
the order of finish. Coppa and Not Now Carolyn were
scratched.
"It was beautiful the way she just settled in. I was
very happy with the way she looked going down the
backside," Hollendorfer said. "She was very comfort-
able, with her ears up, looking for something. The
opportunity presented itself to be just a little off the
pace and now we’ve shown everyone that we can do
that.
“We thought she could do that before, but you
never know until you try. We’ll try to keep her doing
bigger and better things."
Santa Anita and oth-
er wagering interests
lost $201,400.83 be-
cause of a negative show
pool—$1,017,594 of the
$1,081,223 pool was wa-
gered on Songbird.
The Medaglia d'Oro filly
now has an unblemished
record in eight starts,
including seven straight
victories in graded stakes
and $2.1 million in earnings,
but a test against males
does not appear to be in
her immediate future.
"I think we’ll stick with
the girls for now and see
what happens," Hollendorf-
er said. BH

DOMINANT RETURN BY GUN RUNNERBy Tom LaMarra
Winchell Thoroughbreds, Three Chimneys Farm,
and Besilu Stables' Gun Runner was a dominant
winner over five other 3-year-olds in the $100,000
Matt Winn Stakes (gr. III) June 18 at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Florent Geroux for trainer Steve Asmus-
sen, Gun Runner established the early lead from the
start in the 1 1/16-mile Matt Winn, fought off a brief
challenge on the far turn, and pulled away to win by
5 1/4 lengths over Gray Sky, with Texas Chrome third
and Virtual Machine fourth.
The Candy Ride colt's winning time of 1:41.12 on a
fast track is a stakes record and was only :0.08 off the
track record set by Successful Dan in 2012.
Gun Runner, who paid $2.20 to win, finished third
in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands
(gr. I) in his last start May 7. His connections opted to
pass on the next two legs of the Triple Crown to have
a fresh colt for the second half of 2016.
"We're just happy to get him back after the Der-
by," co-owner Ron
Winchell said. "So,
we're looking for-
ward to the Haskell."
The $1 million
Betfair Haskell
Invitational (gr. I) for
3-year-olds will be
run July 31 at Mon-
mouth Park.
Gun Runner, bred
in Kentucky by Besi-
lu Stables out of the
Giant's Causeway
mare Quiet Giant,
won the Risen Star
Stakes and Louisi-
ana Derby (both gr.
II) in his other two
starts this year. He
broke his maiden
in his career debut
last September at
Churchill.
The fractions for the Matt Winn were :23.99 for
the opening quarter-mile, :47.73 for a half-mile, and
1:11.66 for six furlongs. Gray Sky, who tracked the
leader for most of the way, engaged Gun Runner
on the final turn through one-mile in 1:34.96 but
couldn't keep up with him in the stretch.
"When I broke I was hoping that somebody went,
but when nobody went I had to start going," Geroux
said. "I couldn't like try to take him back or something
crazy. I just had to put him wherever he is the most
comfortable."
"Visually, looking at him I think that the horse has
matured," Asmussen said. "He's stronger than he
was. He was beautiful in the gates and went away
smoothly. I thought he handled nicely and he has got
beautiful speed. His confidence should be exactly
where we're hoping for going into an extremely com-
petitive Haskell."
Unbridled Outlaw, second choice on the morn-
ing line behind Gun Runner, was scratched earlier
in the day. BH

PLEUVEN SUCCESSFUL IN WISE DANBy Tom LaMarra
Nelson McMakin's Pleuven, a French-bred gelding
who was a close second in the Opening Verse
Stakes May 21 in his Churchill Downs debut, stepped
up big time with a victory in the $200,000 Wise Dan
Stakes (gr. IIT) at the Kentucky track June 18.
Ridden by Channing Hill for trainer Phil Sims,
Pleuven was close up for most of the 1 1/16-mile turf
event for 3-year-olds and up. He made his bid for the
lead on the far turn, took over from front-running
Kasaqui in midstretch, and edged away to defeat that
horse by three-quarters of a length.
Thatcher Street, who won the Opening Verse,
closed for third, 1 1/2 lengths behind Kasasqui, while
favored The Pizza Man, in his first start since Feb. 6,
rallied belatedly for fourth.
Pleuven, a 5-year-old gelding by Turtle Bowl out
of the Singspiel mare Under Estimated, was bred in
France by Jean De Cheffontaines. He won back-to-
back allowance races in the winter of 2015 at Gulf-
stream Park and didn't resurface until April 21 of this
year at Keeneland, where he finished a tight fifth in
an allowance race.
Pleuven has five wins, two seconds, and two thirds
in 11 starts. BH
PAID UP SUBSCRIBER CAUSES SURPRISEBy Evan Hammonds
Klaravich Stables and Wiliam Lawrence’s Paid Up
Subscriber pulled off a 6-1 upset in the June 18
Fleur de Lis Handicap (gr. II) at Churchill Downs. The
4-year-old Candy Ride filly covered the 1 1/8 miles in
1:48.44, the second-fastest running in the 41 editions
of the stakes.
Ahh Chocolate, the 5-2 second choice, was en-
gaged by Untapable through six furlongs in 1:12.39,
but the tandem was quickly inhaled by Paid Up
Subcriber, who shot between horses in the stretch.
Brooklynsway finished second, finishing two lengths
ahead of late-running Engaginglee.
Untapable was fourth with Ahh Chocolate fifth and
Big Book finishing sixth.
In two previous stakes, the winner finished fourth
in last year’s Prioress Stakes (gr. II) and ninth in the
Raven Run Stakes (gr. II) in October.
Bred in Kentucky by Bruce Berenson and Laurie
Berenson, she is out of the Street Cry mare Shreik.
"We’ve kept this filly in the highest regard," trainer
Al Stall said. “She’s finally getting it together. We just
wanted to throw just one curve ball at her, which
was her first two turn race, so we decided to do it at
home; just walk out of the barn.” BH

OBVIOUSLY TOO STRONG IN POKERBy Blood-Horse Staff
Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino's Obviously
returned from a four-month break between races
and led gate to wire to win the $300,000 Poker Stakes
(gr. IIIT) on the turf at Belmont Park.
Entering his 8-year-old season as a seven-time
graded stakes winner and two-time grade I victor,
Obviously started 2016 with a pair of close seconds
against grade II company at Santa Anita Park before
shipping east from trainer Phil D'Amato's Southern
California base.
On Saturday, Obviously, ridden for the first time
by Jose Lezcano, took his characteristic position at
the head of the pack on the Widener Turf Course and
set and uncontested pace through a :23.07 quar-
ter-mile and a :45.96 half.
Obviously's dominance remained unquestioned
turning for home, as he drew clear in the stretch to
win by 3 3/4 lengths, ahead of Force the Pass, who
was making his first local start since capturing last
year's Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (gr. IT).
Obviously completed the one-turn mile on firm
turf in 1:31.65, just.02 seconds off Elusive Quality's
course record set in
1998.
"The horse is a
freak" Lezcano said.
"He's something
else. He broke well
and went out with
no trouble. The sec-
ond quarter I had
to get him relax. He
started to jump at
the bit, but heading
for home, he did it
easy and got going
again. Looking at
the splits, he just
kept going faster
and faster. I think
he's a very nice
horse."
Favored at 2-1 in the six-horse field, Obviously re-
turned $6.60, $4.10, and $3. Force the Pass brought
$6.30 and $3.50, and Offering Plan returned $3.90 to
show.
Bred by Deidre Cogan in Ireland, Obviously is by
Australian-bred Coolmore shuttle sire Choisir, winner
of the King's Stand Stakes (Eng-II) and the Golden
Jubilee Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot within five days
in 2002. The gelding's unraced dam Leala (Montjeu)
is a daughter of Silver Bubble, whose dam Strait Lane
produced seven stakes winners, including multiple
grade I winner Hawkster.
Obviously improved his career record to 12-6-3
from 27 starts and boosted his lifetime earnings to
$1,747,751. His resume includes wins in the 2013 and
2014 editions of the Shoemaker Mile Stakes (gr. IT).
"He's coming into his own," said D'Amato's assis-
tant, Chris Davis. "He's sound, he's happy, he's fit.
He seems like he's starting to relax better. He really
is just maturing. He's one of those horses that you
don't want to run every two or three weeks. You've
got to hand pick the best races for him, but he's real-
ly doing well. We couldn't be happier with him."
Takeover Target, King Kreesa, and Grand Arch
completed the order of finish. BH

SWEET LORETTA, BRONSON IMPRESS AT MONMOUTHBy Alastair Bull
Two well-related horses profiled recently in Races to Watch broke their maidens in style on debut at
Monmouth Park June 18.
Sweet Loretta, an expensive weanling purchase by
Tapit, and Bronson, a half brother to two grade II win-
ners, impressed with their victories at the New Jersey
racetrack.
Racing in a five-furlong maiden special weight race
for 2-year-old fillies, Sweet Loretta settled just behind
pacesetter Mission Good Karma, angled out at the
top of the stretch, and raced effortlessly away. She
might have won by more than her official margin of
seven lengths had Paco Lopez asked her for more.
The final time was :59.30.
Sweet Loretta fetched the co-fourth-highest price
for a weanling at the 2014 Keeneland November
breeding stock sale when she sold for $750,000. She
is out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Ith-
inkisawapudycat, a half sister to Canadian champion
2-year-old filly Spring in the Air. She was bred by
Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables.
Earlier in the day, Bronson (Medaglia d'Oro) lived
up to his family background when winning a five-fur-
long maiden special weight race in :59.33. He chal-
lenged the leader Exclusive Package down the stretch
before pulling away for a 1 3/4 length victory.
Bred by Ran Jan Racing in Kentucky, Bronson was
a $350,000 purchase at the 2015 Keeneland Septem-
ber yearling sale from the Taylor Made Sales consign-
ment.
His dam, the grade III winner Cambiocorsa
(Avenue of Flags), has also produced Schiaparelli
(Ghostzapper), winner of the Royal Heroine Mile
Stakes (gr. IIT); Moulin de Mougin (Curlin), winner
of the John C. Mabee Stakes (gr. IIT); Vionnet (Street
Sense), third in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (gr. IT); and
winner Alexis Tangier (Tiznow).
Another notable juvenile winner Saturday was Let's
Go Stable and Three Chimneys Farm's Made You Look,
who fought hard to win a six-furlong maiden special
weight race on Belmont Park's inner turf course by
three-quarters of a length in 1:08.23 on firm going.
Bred by the Robert
and Beverly Lewis Trust in
Kentucky, Made You Look is
by More Than Ready out of
Night and Day (Unbridled's
Song). Night and Day is a
daughter of the champion
3-year-old filly Serena's
Song, who won 11 grade I
races during her career.
Serena's Song also
proved an outstanding
broodmare. She produced
six stakes winners, includ-
ing Sophisticat (Storm Cat),
a group I winner in England,
and Serena's Tune (Mr.
Prospector), whose daugh-
ter Serena's Cat is the dam
of last year's U.S. champion
older male Honor Code. BH

TWILIGHT SON TAKES DIAMOND JUBILEEBy Myra Lewyn
Twilight Son was all out to prevail in a tight five-
horse finish June 18 in the Diamond Jubilee
(Eng-I), the closing day feature at Royal Ascot, while
last year's winner, United States-based Undrafted,
was unplaced.
Godfrey Wilson and Cheveley Park Stud's Twilight
Son provided Ryan Moore a third win on the day, as
he bested Hong Kong-based Gold-Fun by a neck. With
the trio of wins, Moore clinched the meet's leading
rider title with six victories over the five-day stand.
Longtime leader Signs of Blessing finished third,
a short head back, and 3-1 favorite Magical Memory
came in fourth another head back. Suedois check in a
short head farther back, as the first five flashed home
within a half-length of each other. The quintet drew
two lengths clear of Undrafted, who finished sixth in
the field of nine sprinters.
Wes Welker and Sol Kumin's Undrafted, winner of
the Shakertown (gr. IIT) in April at Keeneland, was in
contention most of the way, but had no finishing kick
through the final furlong under John Velazquez.
Twilight Son finished the straight six furlongs in
1:13.84 on good to soft turf to add a second group I
win to his record. The 4-year-old son of Kyllachy took
the 2015 Betfred Sprint Cup
(Eng-I) at Haydock Park for
trainer Henry Candy.
Candy, who landed his
third Royal Ascot win overall
but first in 37 years since
Pipedreamer won the 1979
Royal Hunt Cup, momentar-
ily believed Magical Memory
would get the job done, as
he streaked up the stands
side with Frankie Dettori,
but he was beaming with
pride after Twilight Son's de-
termined effort with Moore.
"Our horse really dug
deep and the jockey on top
dug deep. He's a top man,"
said Candy.
Twilight Son tracked Signs of Blessing and Holler
from third early and went to second entering the
final furlong. Eargerly responding to Moore, he spurt-
ed to the lead with 50 yards remaining and gallantly
held his advantage.
Moore started the day with back-to-back victories,
riding 8-11 favorite Churchill (Galileo) in the listed
Chelmsford Stakes, the first race on Saturday's card,
and returned in the next to take the listed Wolferton
Handicap with Sir Isaac Newton (Galileo). Along with
his title-clinching half-dozen wins, he had four sec-
onds and seven thirds. Frankie Dettori was second
with four wins.
Wilson's wife bred Twilight Son, a winner in six
of eight career starts, in Great Britain from the Bin
Ajwaad mare Twilight Mistress, herself a three-time
sprint winner. Cheveley Park Stud, which stands sire
Kyllachy, bought into the bay colt last year. Candy
also trained Kyllachy, a son of Pivotal, to win the 2002
Nunthorpe (Eng-I) for Cheveley Park Stud, which
raced in him partnership.
A crowd of 71,088 attended Royal Ascot Saturday,
bringing total attendance for the meet to 295,007.
Aidan O'Brien was the meet's leading trainer with
a 7-4-4 record. Sir Michael Stoute was second with a
2-2-2 record. BH

GALILEO SHINES ON ROYAL ASCOT'S FINAL DAYBy Tom Hall
Ballydoyle, Coolmore, and Galileo played a strong
opening hand on Royal Ascot's final day, but they
were soon trumped by a Queen, much to the delight
of the crowd.
Two Irish-bred sons of Galileo named for promi-
nent Englishmen took the listed Chesham Stakes for
2-year-olds and Wolferton Handicap for runners age
4 and older.
Contested over seven furlongs, the Chesham was
won by Churchill, trained by Aidan O'Brien, and rid-
den by Ryan Moore. With the Chesham win, Churchill
upheld a bit of family tradition.
Churchill is out of the stakes-winning Irish-bred
Storm Cat mare Meow, a five-furlong specialist who
was group II stakes-placed in the Queen Mary Stakes
at Royal Ascot. The Grangecon Stud Curragh Stakes
was her only black-type win. Meow is a half sister to
group III winner Aloof (Galileo) and stakes winner
Orator (Galileo).
Second dam Airwave (Air Express) was highweight-
ed filly in England at 2 and 3. Winner of the Betfair
Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-I) at Newmarket at 2,
she also had a go at the Royal Ascot meet, finishing
second in the group I Golden Jubilee Stakes over six
furlongs.
Showing the versatility of the progeny of Galileo,
Sir Isaac Newton outlasted a strong field in the 1 1/4-
mile Wolferton. The 4-year-old bay was winning his
first stakes and is yet another representative for the
Galileo (Sadler's Wells)/Danehill (Danzig) cross.
His dam Shastye was a multiple stakes producer
on the day, as her 5-year-old son Maurus (Medicean)
earlier in the day took the 2,150-meter Ipswich Cup in
Australia, his first stakes victory.
The most popular victory at Royal Ascot, the
12-furlong Hardwicke Stakes (Eng-II), belonged to
Dartmouth, owned by Queen Elizabeth II. Bred by
Darley but sporting the royal colors, the 4-year-old
son of Dubawi is out of the Galileo mare Galatee,
from a female family rising under the stewardship of
the Wildenstein family.
Racing only at 3, Galatee won her first three starts,
all at 10 furlongs, including the group III Blue Wind
Stakes at Naas. She is the dam of multiple group-II
winner Manatee (Monsun), who races for Godolphin.
Another member of the Northern Dancer tribe,
Twilight Son, took the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Eng-I).
The 4-year-old son of Kyllachy is a tail-male descend-
ant of Northern Dancer's good sire son Nureyev.
Of the 23 Royal Ascot stakes, 20 were won by
Northern Dancer-line descendants through five sire
sons: Storm Bird (Tepin, Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia,
Usherette), Danzig (Profitable, Galileo Gold, Ardad,
Prince of Lir, Even Song, Brave
Anna, Across The Stars, Quiet
Reflection, Qemah), Sadler's
Wells (Order of St. George,
Sword Fighter, Churchill, Sir
Isaac Newton, Hawkbill), Try My
Best (Persuasive), and Nureyev
(Twilight Son).
Mr. Prospector was respon-
sible for the remainder through
sons Gone West (Ribchester, My
Dream Boat) and Seeking the
Gold (Dartmouth). BH

DAILY FANTASY SPORTS PASSED IN NYBy Tom Precious
New York lawmakers gave final passage early June
18 to a measure legalizing daily fantasy sports
contests, which have been attracting a growing
worldwide audience.
The industry claims it has more than three million
customers in New York.
The measure had been fought by some New York
racetracks that also operate casinos; they had ar-
gued that the contests will cannibalize some of their
customers.
Supporters in the legislature wrestled all week to
try to line up support against an onslaught of oppo-
sition by the New York Gaming Association, which
represents tracks with video lottery terminal opera-
tions as well as other casino companies from upstate
New York to Las Vegas.
"You're going to make a lot of New Yorkers hap-
py," Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican who sponsored
the bill in the Senate, told his colleagues.
The surprisingly brief floor debate belied the level
of intensity of the fierce lobbying battles that have
raged in the state capital the past couple of weeks.
The Senate passed the bill 45-17, while it cleared
the Assembly June 17 by a 91-22 vote. The measure
now goes to Gov. Andrew
Cuomo for consideration; he
has not definitively signaled
his intentions, though Bonacic
on the Senate floor said Cuo-
mo backs the legislation.
The legislation bans daily
fantasy sports contests in
New York from being offered
on horse racing or collegiate
sports events.
New York Attorney Gen-
eral Eric Schneiderman last
fall ordered FanDuel and
DraftKings, the two biggest
daily fantasy sports opera-
tors, to stop operating within
the state's borders. He said
the contests amount to illegal
forms of gambling not per-
mitted in New York, and that
the companies were engaged
in a business to "fleece" customers.
The two companies dismissed his charges and
said their offerings are permissible in the state. The
sides ended up in court, though that process was
suspended while the legislature weighed whether it
wanted to address the issue.
The New York legislation includes some consumer
protections, bans criminal background check require-
ments of certain executives at the DFS companies,
and requires operators to pay a 15% annual tax on
the proceeds of their business in New York, along
with an additional tax of up to $50,000. It directs
those proceeds to the state's public education fund-
ing pot, a last-minute bow to win over some reluctant
lawmakers. It also lets the New York State Gaming
Commission audit the fantasy sports companies.
Opponents said the measure is loophole-ridden;
they believe a ban on play by teens under age 18 is
unenforceable. They also argued that the legislature
does not have the authority to decide what is or is
not a legal form of gambling, and that an expansion
requires voter approval in statewide in a constitution-
al amendment referendum.
"You've got to tie yourself into a pretzel to some-
how say that this is not gambling," said Assemblyman
Thomas Abinanti, a Westchester County Democrat
who opposed the bill. BH

STEADY PLANS FOR UNIFIEDBy Claire Novak
There's something heady about the early days of a
brilliant runner's career, when a horse has done
just enough to make headlines but is yet untested
at the highest level. Anticipation rises with higher
stakes, all eyes on a contender who could be any kind
of legend.
To this exciting teritory comes Jimmy Jerkens with
Unified, the undefeated colt who bypassed the Bel-
mont Stakes (gr. I) to run in the June 19 Betfair.com
Pegasus (gr. III) at Monmouth Park.
A Centennial Farms syndicate of 12 partners could
have urged for the bigger test June 11 off the 3-year-
old colt's May 14 score in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II),
but trust in their down-to-earth trainer and a long-
term goal kept them grounded.
"There was no issue with not running in the Bel-
mont," said Centennial president Don Little Jr. "Even
though it's a syndicate, it's small, and the people
involved are horse people and they understand
we always do what's right by the horse. They get
it—we're patient, we
really trust Jimmy's de-
cision-making, we don't
question anything really,
they're very confident
and pleased with the
results."
While Unified
cuts back from the 1
1/8-miles run around
one turn in the Peter
Pan to two turns at 1
1/16 miles for this race,
the Pegasus should tell
these connections what
they need to know of
their runner, who has
taken three starts—two
of them stakes—with
ease. Will he stretch out
in the summer to con-
test the hottest sopho-
more races in the land,
or will he stay sprinting
and target a race like the
King's Bishop (gr. I)?
"I'm sure everybody wants to see what kind of
horse we really have here," Little said. "It's still a bit of
a question mark as to whether he can get a distance
of ground or not. His pedigree suggests he should;
his running style leaves a bit of doubt. We'd like to
see him handle two turns, able to relax a little bit.
Everything looks good as of right now."
Unified, who has the highest career Equibase
speed figure (111) of any in the seven-horse field,
should easily handle these. His prime competition
could come from local last-out allowance winner
Awesome Slew, trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., who re-
turned to win that May 21 event after sitting on the
shelf since a fourth in the Sanford Stakes (gr. III) last
July at Saratoga Race Course.
Another interesting contender is Parx Racing
shipper Abiding Star, who won five in a row and
then finished 11th in his most recent start, the May
21 Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Also shipping from Parx
is Saratoga Jack, who went wire-to-wire on a sloppy
track May 22 to take a Parx allowance event by 10 3/4
lengths. He has the closest Equibase speed figure to
Unified in the field, a 102 earned for that win. BH

For a few weeks, Sherman has indicated the
"serious" work will begin when he adds blinkers, but
he playfully declined to comment on how soon that
might happen. BH
SWIFT BREEZE FOR CALIFORNIA CHROMEBy Jeremy Balan
As Art Sherman prepares California Chrome for his
next start in the $200,000 San Diego Handicap
(gr. II) with weekly timed workouts, the trainer seems
to be more concerned with what happens after the
wire than before.
So when the 2014 Horse of the Year powered
through the clubhouse turn at Los Alamitos Race
Course, with a gallop out to six furlongs in 1:12 2/5
June 18, Sherman was more than pleased.
The 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit hit the wire in
:59 1/5 for five furlongs, by far his swiftest breeze
since returning to the Sherman barn in early May,
but it was the finishing touch that again impressed
his trainer.
"The last part is where he kicks it in and the fin-
ish—once he goes out and goes around that turn—
that shows his stamina is getting stronger," Sherman
said. "His gallop-out each time is stronger. He's really
going seven-eighths of a mile. It doesn't look like it,
but that's what he does. He does everything kinda
effortlessly."

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, [email protected]
ON STALLION FINANCES
A metric used in stallion valuation is the "times
stud fee" multiple, where syndicate share
price is divided by stud fee. The multiple can
logically range from the low teens for 40-share
syndicates of young stallions to below 1.0 for
aged stallions.
The analysis is more manageable if we only
consider stallion shares that provide the right to
breed one mare annually. In that case, the "times
stud fee" number will rarely approach six.
Consider an example: If you purchase a stal-
lion share in a young "proven" stallion before
the 2017 breeding
season, it's probably
reasonable to expect
to eventually produce
nine foals or collect
fees for nine seasons,
in which case you'd
be willing to pay nine
times the market
stud fee if there are
no share expenses
and breaking even is
acceptable.
But shareholders
pay syndicate expens-
es, and investors de-
sire positive returns,
so the finances of this situation dictate that this
share will be valued at approximately five times
stud fee.
It might seem that a stallion manager should
try to maximize the "times stud fee" number
when selling or managing a stallion, but that's
often suboptimal. Let's compare two extremes
for two equally promising stallions. An "old-
school" stallion manager advertises that he will
sell 90 shares and breed a maximum of 100
mares to "Ima Conservative," while a "new-
school" stallion manager tells potential share-
holders that she will sell 180 shares and breed
200 mares to "Aggressive."
Buyers of Ima Conservative shares will
appreciate that they won't have to jockey for a
place in the breeding queue or compete against
many yearlings by this sire at sales. Though it's
not clear that the following would be the case,
buyers of shares in "Aggressive" might be willing
to pay exactly half the "Ima Conservative" share
price given the drawbacks to a 180-share syndi-
cate. If so, the total syndication proceeds will be
the same for both stallions because the "Aggres-
sive" syndicate has twice as many shares.
If Aggressive's
stud fees are
more than half
of those for Ima
Conservative, the
times stud fee
multiple will be
higher for Ima
Conservative. But,
more important
to the syndicator
is the total price
paid, which is the
same for both
stallions.
If the syndi-
cates included
Wall Street types, bet that someone would be
considering "takeover." The Ima Conservative
syndicate can make more money with little risk
by breeding more mares. The Aggressive syn-
dicate might be able to lower risk and increase
share prices dramatically by breeding fewer
mares. Is there one magic number of mares to
cover? Not necessarily—a risk-averse syndicate
may prefer fewer mares for Ima Conservative
and vice versa for Aggressive investors. BH
