CALVIN BOREL TO RETURN TO RACINGBy Blood-Horse Staff
Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel, who retired from
racing in March, said he would resume his riding
career Aug. 27 at Ellis Park, it was announced Aug.
15.
"When you love something, it's hard to break
(away)," Borel told the Ellis Park media team. "This is
all I know how to do, and I love it. And I'm healthy. If
I wasn't healthy, I could walk away. But I'm doing so
good now. I'm not fighting my weight. I'm so happy."

I)-winning rider, recently returned from New York
where he attended the Hall of Fame induction cere-
mony. His agent will be Frank Bernis, who also lines
up mounts for Brian Hernandez Jr.
Borel said he wanted to get on some mounts
before Kentucky Downs and Churchill Downs begin
their September meets.
Borel retired suddenly March 30 at Oaklawn Park
with little explanation, other than telling his former
agent it was just time in a career that began in 1983
and included fracturing almost every bone in his
body at one time or another. He returned to the
Louisville area in early July, staying with trainer Buff
Bradley and riding horses in the morning.
The decision to retire was apparently not so
clear-cut. Borel said he was conflicted but had been
getting some pressure from Lisa Borel to return to
Central Florida where she lived and had show hors-
es. While the jockey and Lisa were in a long-time rela-
tionship and she took his name, he said they never
were married. Borel said he went to Florida but the
relationship didn't work out.
He went to his native Louisiana to spend time with
family, then came to Kentucky. In early July he said
he hadn't discounted a return to riding but needed
time to think about it.
Borel was famous for his relentless work ethic. Of
retirement, Borel said: "I didn't like it. I took enough
time off. It wasn't fun anymore. Some people quit
because they're tired of it. I'm not tired of it. I was in
New York for like two weeks, getting on some horses
for 'Coach,' Wayne Lukas, and he said, 'You're not
ready to retire.' I just want to come back and ride
and see what happens."
Borel won riding titles at Ellis Park in 1995 and
2011 and was the 2010 recipient of the George
Woolfe Memorial Jockey Award. He won the Derby
aboard Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird (2009)
and Super Saver (2010).
He also was the rider of new Hall of Fame induct-
ee Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year
upon whom he won the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) by a
record 20 1/4 lengths and then beat the boys in the
BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the William Hill
Haskell Invitational (gr. I), and against older horses in
Saratoga's Woodward Stakes (gr. I).
Borel's 5,146 victories rank No. 27 all-time. BH

SALES UPDATE
THE FACTOR LEADS NY SALE BY AVERAGEBy Eric Mitchell
Freshman sire The Factor led the sire ranks by
average at this weekend's Fasig-Tipton New
York-bred preferred yearling sale at Saratoga
Springs, N.Y.
Lane's End's
multiple grade
I-winning son
of War Front
had three of six
offered sell for
an average of
$213,333 and
bring a median
of $230,000. He
was the only sire, represented by three or more
sold, to have an average and median above
$200,000.
Lane's End as agent sold The Factor's high-
est-priced yearling, a $290,000 colt out of the
winning Sky Mesa mare Flash Act. The colt's
second dam is grade I winner Missy's Mirage,
who has produced stakes winner Apprehender.
August Dawn Farm bought the colt, who was
bred in New York by McMahon of Saratoga Thor-
oughbreds, and was the fourth-highest purchase
at the sale.
Mike and Meg Levy's Bluewater Sales
sold the other two The Factor yearlings.
Patricia R. Schuler bought a filly out of
Headstrong Beauty (Latent Heat) and
bred by Hart Farm for $230,000. Blue-
water also sold a colt out of Steel Shed
(Theatrical) for $120,000 to Steve Perlick
and Alan Herman. This colt was bred by
Hidden Lake Farm and Dragon Squared.
One other freshman sire cracked the
top 10 by average price. WinStar Farm's
Gemologist was the sixth-leading sire,
with a $120,000 average for three sold.
His top seller was a $235,000 colt out of
the unraced Stormy Atlantic mare Red Menace,
who is a half sister to multiple New York stakes
winner Saratoga Snacks.
Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief ranked sec-
ond overall with an average of $173,333 and a
median of $175,000 for three sold. The top seller
by the son of Harlan's Holiday sold for $225,000
to Midwest Thoroughbreds out of the Paramount
Sales consignment. The filly out of stakes produc-
er Tres Chaud (French Deputy) is out of the fami-
ly of grade I winners Stella Madrid and Tis Juliet.
Ashford Stud's Uncle Mo ranked third by aver-
age at the New York sale, represented by seven
sold for an average of $155,429 and a median of
$110,000. His son, named Mo Diddley, out of the
Vindication mare Miss Bodine, topped the sale
with a $450,000 final bid from Everett Dobson's
Cheyenne Stables. The sale-topper set a record
for this sale, exceeding last year's record price of
$350,000 for a Tiznow filly.
Lane's End's City Zip was right on the heels of
Uncle Mo by both average price at $137,500 and
by highest-priced yearling. His $375,000 colt out
of Flaunted (Tale of the Cat) was bought by Linda
Rice on behalf of client Sheila Rosenblum and out
of the Indian Creek consignment. Rice trained
City Zip to six graded stakes victories. BH

ALABAMA FINAL PREP 'PERFECT' FOR SONGBIRDBy Teresa Genaro
Undefeated champion filly Songbird put in her final
breeze the morning of Aug. 15 for the $600,000
Alabama Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course in a
move characterized as "perfect" by Christina Jelm,
who is overseeing the filly's preparations for trainer
Jerry Hollendorfer.
Under regular exercise rider Edgar Rodriguez,
Songbird was clocked for the half-mile work in :24.22
and :47.49, galloping out in 1:01.19.
"We just wanted to have a nice, easy, half-mile
breeze and an easy gallop out," said Jelm. "Edgar did
perfect, and she was smooth in her regular Songbird
fashion. Edgar did exactly what Jerry wanted."
Jelm has been at Saratoga with Songbird since the
3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, out of the
graded stakes winning mare Ivanavinalot, won the
Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) July 24.
"She's relaxed. She's just professional all the time,"
said Jelm. A Kentucky-based bloodstock agent that
travels with Hollendorfer's horses outside of Califor-
nia, Jelm was at Saratoga with Hollendorfer's Sweet
Lulu when that filly won the Test Stakes (gr. I) in 2013.
"She's everything you'd want in a horse," Jelm con-
tinued. "She has her fun and playful moments, but
she knows when to have them."
Hollendorfer is expected to arrive in Saratoga
from California within the next day or two. Songbird
will school in the paddock during the race day on
Thursday and Friday, walking tomorrow, jogging on
Wednesday, and galloping into the Aug. 20 Alabama.
"Every afternoon we get her out and walk her,"
said Jelm, "so she gets some sunshine and she'll be
able to graze a little bit every day."
Last week, a Ghostzapper half sister to the 2015
champion 2-year-old filly, consigned by Hill 'n' Dale
Sales Agency sold for $800,000, the fourth-highest
price at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.
She was purchased by PTK, a Florida-based partner-
ship led by Tom Haughey. BH

LIKELY TRAVERS CONTENDERS POST FINAL WORKSBy Blood-Horse Staff
Creator and Gun Runner breezed in company on
the Saratoga main track on Aug. 14, working five
furlongs in 1:00 3/5 ahead of possible starts in the
$1.25 million Travers (gr. I).
Gun Runner, ridden by jockey Florent Geroux, and
Creator, with exercise rider Abel Flores aboard, put in
what trainer Steve Asmussen said were great efforts
in advance of the Aug. 27 race.
"I thought they worked beautifully," said Asmus-
sen, who was inducted into the National Museum
of Racing and Hall of Fame on Friday. "I thought we
got lucky with the racetrack today to stay on sched-
ule, under good circumstances, to get done what we
wanted, when we wanted."
Creator, the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner, is
coming off a last-place finish in the Jim Dandy (gr.
II) July 30. Gun Runner, the Risen Star and Louisiana
Derby (both gr. II) winner, finished fifth in the Haskell
Invitational (gr. I) July 31. Asmussen said both recent
finishes for the 3-year-olds prompted him to work
the duo together for the first time.
"It's the first time they worked in company, but
off of disappointing races for both of them, I did not
want to kid myself how they
were doing," he said. "But I was
very impressed with the work
and they both seemed to come
out of it in great shape."
Asmussen said he'll leave the
next start for Gettysburg, who
finished eighth as the pacesetter
in the Belmont, in the hands of
owners WinStar Farm. The Pio-
neerof the Nile colt breezed four
furlongs in :50.94 on Sunday on
the Oklahoma training track.
Gettysburg has been nominated
to the Travers.
"He's a talented horse and
I thought it was a solid work,"
Asmussen said.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob
Baffert confirmed this morning
both American Freedom, sec-
ond in the Haskell, and Arro-
gate, who has beaten older horses in his three most
recent starts, are being pointed to the Travers.
Owned by Gary and Mary West, American Free-
dom won the Iowa Derby (gr. III). A $500,000 yearling
purchase, the Pulpit colt has three victories this year,
including the LARC Sir Barton Stakes May 20 at Pimli-
co.
Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate, a $560,000 yearling,
finished third after a slow start in his debut in April
going six furlongs at Los Alamitos. He returned in
June to break his maiden and win a first-level op-
tional claimer at Santa Anita Park, and most recently
was a front-running victor in a second-level optional
claimer, all at 1 1/16 miles.
"Arrogate is in a position where he's had enough
racing experience to take the big leap," said Baffert.
"We feel confident that the 1 1/4 miles is a good dis-
tance for him. So far, I like what I've seen, so they are
both coming."
Trainer Chad Brown reported that My Man Sam,
who worked four furlongs in :48.93 Aug. 12, will join
stablemates Connect and Gift Box in preparations for
a start in the Travers.
"My Man Sam is now on target for the Travers,"
said Brown. "I'm not exactly sure when each will work
again, but we'll watch the weather and come up with
a plan to have all ready and in contention." BH

NTRA THOROUGHBRED POLLBy Blood-Horse Staff
Even with upcoming races Aug. 20 it doesn’t seem that
the top players on the NTRA Thoroughbred poll may
be movable.
Frosted made the biggest move in the poll by magnitude
of class with his consecutive grade I wins in the Mohegan
Sun Metropolitan Handicap and the Whitney Stakes. He
moved into second after the Whitney over champion Tepin,
bumping the mare for the first time since she established
her place in the voting at the end of March.
California Chrome, who has led the poll for all 24
weeks of voting in 2016, is set to run in the much-antici-
pated TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar with champion
racemare Beholder, second to Stellar Wind in her last
race, and Dortmund, who gave him a run for his money
in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II) last out.
Undefeated Songbird is expected for the grade I Ala-
bama against 3-year-old fillies. BH
TARA'S TANGO SET TO RETURN IN RANCHO BERNARDOBy Myra Lewyn
Bob Baffert will bid to win the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (gr. III) for
a third time, sending out Pretty N Cool and Enchanting Lady against
grade I winner Tara's Tango Aug. 17 at Del Mar.
The 6 1/2-furlong Rancho Bernardo drew seven fillies and mares.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Tara's Tango captured the Santa Maria
(gr. II) in February and Santa Margarita (gr. I) in March. The daughter of
Unbridled's Song makes her first start in three months since finishing
third in her subsequent outing in the Apple Blossom (gr. I) April 15 at
Oaklawn Park.
Pretty N Cool and Enchanting Lady were the respective 1-2 finishers
in the six-furlong C.E.R.F. Stakes July 20 at Del Mar.
Pretty N Cool, a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Scat Daddy
owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, won the first
two starts of her career at Del Mar last year, including the Sorrento
Stakes (gr. II) last August. Her 1 1/2-length victory in the C.E.R.F. Stakes
marked a return from a six-month layoff.
Kaleem Shah's two-time stakes winner Enchanting Lady, a grade
I-placed, 4-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat, is aiming for her first
graded win to end a four-race winless stretch dating back to February
at Santa Anita Park. Two starts later she finished third in the Humana
Distaff (gr. I) in May at Churchill Downs. BH

ARQANA PART I CLEARS AS SECOND-BESTBy Blood-Horse Staff
Part I of Arqana's August yearling sale was tracking
as the second-best ever following the second day
of the three-day session.
So far, figures have been headed only by last
year's record-breaking performance.
After the second day at Deauville Aug. 15, 81% of
the 172 yearlings led through the ring were sold, up
from 76% in 2015. They returned €29,861,000 (US$
33,316,200), a 7% slip from a year ago but still higher
than any other previous Part I gross. The cumulated
average is €213,293 ($237,973), down 13% from the
record-breaking 2015 edition.
The Coolmore/Mayfair Speculators partnership
was responsible for the two highest prices of the day,
with Peter Doyle and M.V. Magnier doing the bid-
ding. Both yearlings shared the distinction of being
daughters of perennial champion sire Galileo, out of
black-type winning mares from the draft of Ecurie
des Monceaux.
First through the ring, Hip 97 out of the listed
winner Prudenzia, hence a half sister to the classic
heroine Chicquita, for which the Coolmore principals,
standing alongside Peter Doyle, Derek Brugman, and
Michael Jooste of Mayfair Speculators, went to €1.4
million ($1,561,990) to outbid Barry Weisbord and
James Delahooke.
Two lots later, Hip 99, a daughter of the group
III Prix de Royaumont winner
Quetsche, attracted a closing bid
of €650,000 ($725,212) from the
same connections.
"There is always a good reason
to buy these good fillies," said
Doyle. "They are both outstand-
ing fillies, individual-wise, two
very nice Galileos with special
pedigrees. They don't come by so
often."
Hip 113, a daughter of Fran-
kel out of the Dashing Blade
mare Sasuela was the €600,000
($669,426) pick of Japanese owner
Kenji Ryotokuji, who was investing
on the Deauville market for the
first time via manager Takashi
Iiyama. The winning Sasuela has
already delivered three black type horses in group I
winner Seismos and group I performers Soberania
and Samba Brazil.
"We were very interested in her before we came
here and when we saw her we were very impressed,"
said Iiyama. "She is quite small but I saw Frankel in
Great Britain and she is similar in the body. She will
go to Japan to be trained in Rito by Mr. Yoshimura."
The appetite for Frankel's progeny was consistent
throughout the evening. Hip 104, a son of the great
champion and the first foal out of group II-winning
juvenile Restiadargent—who ran third to Black Caviar
in the group I Diamond Jubilee Stakes—was knocked
down to Pascal Bary for €520,000 ($580,169). The
family traces back to the Prix de Diane (Fr-I, French
Oaks) victress Resless Kara.
"We were underbidder to Shadwell yesterday on
the Frankel filly (Hip 92) so we are delighted to be
able to buy this one," said Taieb. "This colt has the
conformation and the pedigree, and looks quite pre-
cocious as well. He will be trained by Pascal Bary."
The price was matched by Hip 154, a dark brown
son of Le Havre who came into the ring with solid
credentials as the brother to this year's unbeaten
dual classic heroine La Cressonniere. Interest arose
from all around the ring but Richard Brown prevailed
at €520,000 before indicating that John Gosden
would take delivery of the colt.

GONE WEST SIRE LINE STRONG IN EUROPEBy Clive Webb-Carter
The Gone West sire-line had a stellar weekend
in Europe, led by his grandson Iffraaj (Zafonic)
whose progeny scored a stakes double Aug. 14.
Ribchester posted his career-best performance
and first group I win in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-
le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois at Deauville on Sunday.
In Great Britain, 4-year-old filly Mehronissa became
her sire's 39th stakes winner, winning the listed
six-furlong EBF Stallions Highfield Farm Flying Fillies
Stakes at Pontefract.
The year has been particularly strong for Iffraaj.
Not only did Ribchester win the Jersey Stakes (Eng-III)
June 15 at Royal Ascot and place third in the QIP-
CO Two Thousand Guineas Stakes (Eng-I)—another
3-year-old, Nathra, scored in the Lanwades Stud
Nell Gwyn Stakes (Eng-III) to be one of her sire’s four
European stakes winner this year.
Iffraaj‘s group I-winning son, Wootton Bassett,
who was part of his sire's 2010 record-breaking 38
first-crop winners, also made a good start to his
stud career. Almanzor won the Prix du Jockey Club
(French Derby, Fr-I) becoming Wootton Bassett's first
classic winner from his first crop.
The feature race Aug. 13 in Great Britain also fell
to the Gone West line, when Richard Pankhurst by
Raven's Pass, a Gone West grandson, won Newbury's
Betfred Hungerford Stakes (Eng-II). It was Richard
Pankhurst's his second stakes win over seven fur-
longs following the 2014 Chesham Stakes. BH
SHAMARDAL HITS 100TH BLACK-TYPE WINNERBy Myra Lewyn
Darley sire Shamardal joined an elite circle of stal-
lions to reach the 100 black-type winners milestone
when his daughter Gouache won the Preis von Berliner
Schloss-Hoppegartener Stutenpreis Aug. 14 in Germany.
Shamardal is a 14-year-old Kentucky-bred son of
Giant's Causeway out of the Machiavellian mare Helsinki,
a full sister to grade/group I winner and deceased sire
Street Cry. He stands in Ireland at Kildangan Stud where
his 2016 fee was listed as private.
The stallion has 17 group I winners, including 2015
Hong Kong Horse of the Year and champion miler Able
Friend and 2010 Australian champion 3-year-old filly
Faint Perfume. With 1,265 foals in nine crops he has a re-
spectable 8% foals-to-stakes winners strike rate. Overall,
his progeny have earned more than $86.7 million.
Shamardal has 17 stakes winners in 2016, including
group I winners Dariyan and Tryster, and Australian
group II winner Bow Creek.
Shamardal, a two-time classic winner in France, took
the 2005 Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I, French Derby) and
Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I, French Two Thousand
Guineas) as well as the St. James's Place Stakes (Eng-I) at
Royal Ascot, all in succession.
Unbeaten at age 2, he won three races, including the
Darley Dewhurst (Eng-I) and was named Europe's cham-
pion 2-year-old colt.
Gouache won the 1,800-meter (about 1 1/8-mile)
event by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.30. She is
trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho for owner-breeder Stall
Ullmann. The 4-year-old filly is out of the stakes-winning
Dynaformer mare Guantana. The winner is a half sister
to group II winner Guardini. BH

RACINGCOMMENTARYwith Bob Barry
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF WEATHERMEN
In the recent past, when graded stakes were
still scattered across Saratoga's calendar like
the bread crumbs marking Hansel's trail (the
fairy tale character, not Woodman's dual-classic
winning son), any old day at the Spa that wasn't
a Tuesday was likely to provide some amazing
racing.
If the quality of weekday racing at Sarato-
ga is not what it once was, at least it's in good
company. Yet even in this era of widespread
and urgent longing for younger and presumably
better-looking days gone by, when it comes to
weekday racing at the Spa, recent eyewitness
accounts confirm that from time to time there is
still magic.
But with racing's headlong dash to a calendar
of "Big Days" inevitably surrounded by lesser
ones, taking your best chance on witnessing the
improbable generally requires the freeing-up
of your Saturdays. And with only seven of them
punctuating the Saratoga season, it takes one
excellent reason (or two very good ones) to keep
this correspondent from crossing the Rip van
Winkle Bridge and heading north on the North-
way every Saturday.
This past Saturday overcompensated by
providing one excellent reason to stay home
(the threat of violent late-afternoon and ear-
ly-evening thunderstorms) and two very good
ones (daylong weather of the kind that prompt-
ed the invention of the "misery index" and the
Million Day card at Arlington Park).
The decision to stay home was quickly val-
idated when NYRA's paddock analyst Maggie
Wolfendale tweeted, "On days like today we
really have to thank and acknowledge the lead
ponies, their riders, outriders, grooms, hot walk-
ers, and the gate crew". Indeed. It was an awful
day for anyone who had to work outside.
Further validation ensued when a storm
unloaded over Saratoga, delaying the start of
the fourth race and prompting a rash of scratch-
es when three subsequent grass races were
switched to the main track. When the fifth race
revealed that even the sloppy dirt track was
unfit to travel over, the balance of the race card
was canceled.
Although Saratoga's long run of great week-
end racing weather came crashing down on
Saturday, at least NYRA was both savvy and
fortunate enough to have the stakes portion of
Arlington Million Day as a part of its new televi-
sion venture.
If some of the results seemed familiar—Chad
Brown has apparently developed a nasty "two a
day" turf stakes habit—this viewer loved see-
ing Arlington Park taking one more close-up. I
imagined the gently aging trainer declaring, "I'm
still big, it’s the racing that got smaller".
It’s painful to think that the fate of Dick
Duchossois' wonderful theater of the Thorough-
bred is in the hands of those who have helped
bring Illinois racing to its current sad state of
affairs. At this late date, do they really need
a weatherman to know which way the wind
blows? BH
