As I was flipping through the channels I landed on an episode of America’s Next Top Model. I must admit I’m not a fan of the show. However, this particular episode caught my attention. The contestants were given the challenged of walking down a runway staged with two giant swinging pendulums. As one contestant by the name of Alexandra Underwood prepared to step onto the runway the unthinkable was about to happen. She didn’t fall once on national television, she fell twice. The second time being completely knocked off the runway by one of the swinging pendulums.

I can remember standing in front of my television saying, “Oh my goodness.” With my eyes glued to the TV, I watched as this fallen young lady gathered I can remember standing in front of my television saying, “Oh my goodness.” With my eyes glued to the TV, I watched as this fallen young lady gathered her composure. Then she climbed back onto the runway and completed the task. This chic strutted her stuff right off that stage as if she didn’t just fall twice on national TV. I’m now standing in front of my television saying, “Oh no she didn’t.” I loved it! What an incredible lesson for you and I to learn from this young lady. A fall doesn’t have to be your finale. Not if you’re willing to do what she did, RECOVER!

Alexandra made a remarkable recovery. Not only did she manage to recover, but she went on to become one of the final four contestants. She didn’t let her Alexandra made a remarkable recovery. Not only did she manage to recover, but she went on to become one of the final four contestants. She didn’t let her falls become the platform for her finish. Instead, she used them to display a depth of determination, strength and resilience to finish the competition strong. I’m sure there will always be people who remember her as the girl who fell twice on America’s Next Top Model. Not me. I will always remember her as the girl who showed the world you can recover from life’s falls.

I’ll be the first to admit, I have taken some hard tumbles in my life. Bad decisions, weak moments, and wrong crowds all have gotten the best of me. Nevertheless, I couldn’t let the knockdowns of life keep me from recovering. Falls can be costly no doubt. However, forfeiting your future because of a fall is Nevertheless, I couldn’t let the knockdowns of life keep me from recovering. Falls can be costly no doubt. However, forfeiting your future because of a fall is more fatal. This is what I’ve learned, if you don’t give up you can get back up. And here’s how:

You Can RECOVER!

BY DENIELLE EASTON

3. Don’t live your life in the fall;; live your life after the fall.

Guilt, shame, and embarrassment will all try to tempt you to live the rest of your life in the shadows of a fall. Don't do it. You have to do for yourself what others may not be willing to do for you. Give yourself another chance. Your yesterday is exactly that, yesterday. The best of what life has to offer is before you not behind yesterday. The best of what life has to offer is before you not behind you. We’re all human and capable of falling short. None of us are here today because we made every right decision in life. Instead, we made the choice not to let the wrong choices stop us from moving forward.

Recovery is not an option for people destined for greatness. And that my friend describes you. Call me a bit of an optimist, but I believe there’s something greater than a fall. That’s the recovery of one. Don’t give up on getting up. There’s still time for you to recover. give up on getting up. There’s still time for you to recover.

2. Don’t focus on the scribes, focus on the Sovereign One.

You have to learn how to outlast your scribes. Who are scribes? Scribes are individuals who spend a significant amount of time recording every detail of your life, especially your falls. I know what you are thinking, “I don’t care what people say about me.” You don't actually believe that do you? We all desire two things, love and acceptance. So to some do you? We all desire two things, love and acceptance. So to some degree we do care what people say;; what they think;; and how they feel about us. Falls tend to make us more vulnerable to people’s perception. But here’s what I have learned about perception. While perception may be a person’s reality, it doesn’t necessarily make it true. Don't spend too much time trying to change people's perception of you. Nothing you do or say willtrying to change people's perception of you. Nothing you do or say will alter how some people perceive you. Can I be honest? Some people will never get over your falls, but you can’t let that stop you from recovering. Do you know why I told you to focus on the Sovereign One? Because our falls don’t intimidate Him, they intimidate us. Our falls never catch Him off guard. They catch us off guard. He's omniscience. He knows in advance every public and private fall you or I will experience. And the good news is every public and private fall you or I will experience. And the good news is He has already given us a recovery plan. It's called REPENTANCE. Never allow people to make you feel like there's no room for you to recover. You can be restored again after a fall when you sincerely repent. If you don’t hear anything else I say hear this, you have been graced for a do over. Now get up and get on with your recovery.

6 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER ISSUE

1. Don’t focus on what happened to you, focus on what’s happening in you.

Lose the "woe it's me" syndrome. You can't sit around in denial, blaming others or having a pity party and expect to recover. Remember our model Alexandra, she didn't have time to pity her falls. She had to get back in the game of living life, and so do you. Believe it or not a fall can be a good thing. They don’t always feel good, but they can work out for our good. You’ve probably heard of the reality show “Extreme Makeover.” Well I believe sometimes falls can be a set up for divine makeover. After all, many falls we suffer are the result of something being off balance in our lives. Our thoughts, morals, convictions, integrity, and motives can all get off track. What better way to get back on the right track than to fall off the wrong one. Learn from your falls. And the right track than to fall off the wrong one. Learn from your falls. And focus on making whatever critical adjustments you need to make to ensure you don’t experience that fall again.

The phrase "Jim Crow Law" first appeared in 1904 according to the Dictionary of American English, although there is some evidence of earlier usage, The origin of the phrase "Jim Crow" has often been attributed to "Jump Jim Crow", a song-and-dance caricature of blacks performed by white actor Thomas D. Rice in blackface, which first surfaced in 1832 and was used to satirize Andrew Jackson's populist policies. As a result of Rice's fame, "Jim Crow" had become a pejorative expression meaning "Negro" by 1838 and when the laws of racial segregation – directed against blacks – were enacted at the end of the 19th century they became known as Jim Crow laws.

The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities in Southern states of the former Confederacy, with a supposedly "separate but equal" status for black Americans. The separation led to treatment, financial support and accommodations that were usually inferior to those provided for white Americans, systematizing a number of economic, educational and social disadvantages. De jure segregation mainly applied to the Southern United States. Northern segregation was generally de facto, with patterns of segregation in housing enforced by covenants, bank lending practices, and job discrimination, segregation was generally de facto, with patterns of segregation in housing enforced by covenants, bank lending practices, and job discrimination, including discriminatory union practices for decades.

Some examples of Jim Crow laws are the segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The U.S. military was also segregated. These Jim Crow Laws were separate from the 1800–1866 Black Codes, which had previously restricted the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans. State-sponsored school segregation was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. Generally, the segregation was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

After World War II, African Americans increasingly challenged segregation, as they believed they had more than earned the right to be treated as full citizens because of their military service and sacrifices. The Civil Rights Movement was energized by a number of flashpoints, including the 1946 attack on World War II veteran Isaac Woodard while he was in U.S. Army uniform. In 1948 President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, desegregating the armed services.Order 9981, desegregating the armed services.

As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum and used federal courts to attack Jim Crow statutes, the white-dominated governments of many of the southern states countered with passing alternative forms of restrictions.

The NAACP Legal Defense Committee (a group that became independent of the NAACP) – and its lawyer, Thurgood Marshall – brought the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954) before the Supreme Court. In its pivotal 1954 decision, the Court unanimously overturned the 1896 Plessy decision. The Supreme Court found that legally mandated (de jure) public school segregation was unconstitutional. The decision had far-reaching social ramifications. De jure segregation was not brought to an end until the passage of the Civil unconstitutional. The decision had far-reaching social ramifications. De jure segregation was not brought to an end until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. History has shown that problems of educating poor children are not confined to minority status, and states and cities have continued to grapple with approaches. The court ruling did not stop de facto or residentially based school segregation. Such segregation continues today in many regions. Some city school systems have also begun to focus on issues of economic and class segregation rather than racial segregation, as they have found that problems are more prevalent when the children of the poor of any ethnic group are concentrated.Associate segregation, as they have found that problems are more prevalent when the children of the poor of any ethnic group are concentrated.Associate Justice Frank Murphy introduced the word "racism" into the lexicon of U.S. Supreme Court opinions in Korematsu v. United States, 323 U.S. 214 (1944). He stated that by upholding the forced relocation of Japanese Americans during World War II, the Court was sinking into "the ugly abyss of racism." This was the first time that "racism" was used in Supreme Court opinion (Murphy used it twice in a concurring opinion in Steele v. Louisville & Nashville R. Co. 323 192 (1944) issued that day). Murphy used the word in five separate opinions, but after he left the Steele v. Louisville & Nashville R. Co. 323 192 (1944) issued that day). Murphy used the word in five separate opinions, but after he left the court, "racism" was not used again in an opinion for almost two decades. It next appeared in the landmark decision of Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967).Interpretation of the Constitution and its application to minority rights continues to be controversial as Court membership changes. Some observers believe the Court has become more protective of the status quo.

The Jim Crow laws were a major factor in the Great Migration during the early part of the 20th century, because opportunities were so limited in the South that African Americans moved in great numbers to northern cities to seek a better life.Despite the hardship and prejudice of the Jim the South that African Americans moved in great numbers to northern cities to seek a better life.Despite the hardship and prejudice of the Jim Crow era, several black entertainers and literary figures managed to become popular with white audiences in the early 20th century. They included luminaries like tap dancers Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers, jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and actress Hattie McDaniel (who became the first black recipient of an Academy Award in 1939 when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind).African-American athletes also faced much discrimination during the Jim Crow period. for her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind).African-American athletes also faced much discrimination during the Jim Crow period. White opposition led to their exclusion from most organized sporting competition. Nevertheless, boxers Jack Johnson and Joe Louis (both of whom became world heavyweight boxing champion) and track and field athlete Jesse Owens (who won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin) earned notoriety during this era. In baseball, a color line instituted in the 1880s had informally barred blacks from playing in the major leagues, leading to the proliferation of the Negro Leagues. However, a major breakthrough occurred in 1947, when Jackie Robinson became the leagues, leading to the proliferation of the Negro Leagues. However, a major breakthrough occurred in 1947, when Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, breaking the color bar permanently. Baseball teams continued to integrate in the following years, leading to the full participation of black baseball players in the Major Leagues in the 1960s.

So from there the oncologist, surgeon and Cheena decided to do Neo-Adjuvant Therapy. This is a form of treatment that in some have shown great results when the tumor reacts to the chemo and in other cases it doesn’t react at all. Cheena decided to do a genetics test just to see if there was a BRAC1 or BRAC2 gene impact. These test results came back BRAC1 unspecified significance and BRAC2 came back no mutation. The genetics physician/counselor found that Cheena was 1 in 5000 families to come up with a result like this and there have not been enough studies to understand or to even determine yet if the “unspecified significance” was the origin of the breast cancer. Upon the doctor’s recommendation Cheena went thru 5 months of chemotherapy and the chemotherapy had a huge effect on the tumor to the recommendation Cheena went thru 5 months of chemotherapy and the chemotherapy had a huge effect on the tumor to the point it went from a 2.0 down to a 1.0 x .6 x .8 measure in size. The next step was to go through 2 months of radiation which the oncologist called a “clean sweep”. Cheena Headen-Wright is a devoted woman of GOD. Roommate problems, meal plans, financial aid early morning classes and late night study sessions are things that make-up the life of a “College Student”. Unfortunately the typical “College Life” student replaces the late night study sessions with late night party session at theclub and missing classes in the morning. Being a first-time freshman, people expected me to have a desire to live the “College Life Student” rather than the “College Student Life” and it shock them even the more when I explain that I was also living the “Christian Life”. Someoneonce asked me, why wasn’t I living the college life and when they heard my response they once asked me, why wasn’t I living the college life and when they heard my response they looked at me as if I had something on my face. They couldn’t understand or grasp the concept of why I choose to live that type of life at a young age or why I even wanted to live the Christian Life while in college. I explained to one of the RA’s (Resident Assistance) that I was willing to sacrifice the partying and everything that comes with it so that someone could possibly be introduce to Christ or even be saved, I elaborated on the fact that my life was NOT my own therefore I didn’t want to get in the way of God and his plan to draw others towards him. I didn’t want to take the risk in jeopardizing somebodies salvation because I wanted to experience the want to take the risk in jeopardizing somebodies salvation because I wanted to experience the club and other things. Being two hours away from my home church was difficult at first, I felt that I was spiritually weak because I hadn’t been feed however I knew that God separated me from my spiritual home for a reason. I was like a child being separated from my mother’s

umbilical cord; I had to learn how to feed and nurture myself. When I arrived here at school it was like my spiritual umbilical was cut and I am now forced to feed myself with the word so that I can survive the testing period. I’ve learned how to not only study for my Philosophy exam but also for my spiritual exam so that when the Almighty Professor decides to test me I will be able to pass and move on to the next level in my walk. To those who may be in college or will be in college, my advice too you would be know who you are in Christ and furthermore plant yourself in his word so that when the wind of temptation tries to blow you away from his word you won’t sway. The house and frat parties are nothing more than the devil temptation tries to blow you away from his word you won’t sway. The house and frat parties are nothing more than the devil trying to reel you into a life of uncertainty in your walk with Christ. The bible says in John 2:15, “Do not love the word nor the things in it”. It goes on to say that if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. It is up to you to decide which life you want to live.
