Liberty Global in takeover talks with Ziggo12th Dec 2013

Deal would create by far the biggest cable operator in the Netherlands.

Dutch cableco Ziggo on Thursday confirmed it is in talks over a potential takeover bid from U.S.-based Liberty Global.

Liberty Global owns UPC, the Netherlands’ second-largest cable provider by subscribers, and holds 28.5% of bigger rival Ziggo. Were it to acquire Ziggo, it would create a company with 10.8 million revenue generat-ing units.

“There is no certainty that any agreement can be reached or that any offer will ultimate-ly be made,” said Ziggo, in a statement. “Further announce-ments will be made if and when relevant.”

The announcement marks the latest attempt by Liberty Global to grow its European business through acquisitions. In October, it made an offer for the shares in Ziggo it doesn’t already own, which the latter

considered inadequate and promptly rejected.

Earlier this year it was in the race to acquire Kabel Deutschland, a race it would ultimately lose to Vodafone.

If Liberty Global is success-ful in its second attempt to acquire Ziggo, it could have significant repercussions for outgoing Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann, who is due to take the top job at Ziggo on 1 January.

When his appointment was announced in March, Ober-mann described Ziggo as an ideal match because it “fulfils my strong wish as an entre-preneur to move closer to op-erational activities and to be involved in a fast-changing world of offering products and services in media and enter-tainment.”

It remains to be seen whether the role will still of-fer that same promise should Ziggo become part of a bigger entity.

The inhabitants of Green-land’s capital city will have access to LTE for the first time on 1 December.

Earlier this week incumbent telecoms provider Tele Green-land revealed that it is ready to launch its LTE network in Nuuk and plans to extend its 4G footprint to other locations in Greenland in 2014.

The telco has rolled out its network in the 800-MHz spec-trum band. Initially it will be accessible only via dongles,

Nuuk residents to have LTE access from 1 December, but no smartphones available at launch.

MiFis or LTE routers, but Tele Greenland says it is working to get agreements in place with mobile handset vendors to open up the network to smartphone users.

Tele Greenland’s LTE ser-vice will be marketed as Mo-bile Broadband Premium and will cost 999 kroner (€134) per month.

Tele Greenland is 100% state-owned and is the monopoly provider of telecoms services for the country’s 56,000 inhab-itants.

Three-quarters of US con-sumers are using their mobile devices to plan their holiday shopping this year, with in-store price comparisons - or “showrooming” - and mobile coupons as the primary rea-sons for shoppers to reach for their mobile device, according to a new report published to-day.

New research from mobile advertising specialist Mob-Partner reveals that 75 per cent of consumers in the US have already used or intend to use their cellphone or tablet device to plan their shopping over the festive season. The study of 500 US consumers by MobPartner into mCom-merce usage and attitudes reveals that the most popular functions that US consum-ers use their mobile devices for whilst holiday shopping

75% of US consumers plan to use mobile device for holiday shopping

are to research products and prices (37%) and to collect cou-pons and special offers for dis-counts in-store or online (37%). Significantly, the report found that there was only a marginal usage difference between con-sumer mCommerce habits on tablets vs. cellphones.

Making comparisonsThe research found that

comparing prices online is now a firmly established con-sumer behavior, with only eight per cent of respondents stating that they don’t com-pare prices between goods in-store and online at all.

40 per cent identified a mo-bile device as their primary means of researching and comparing prices – ahead of a PC or laptop. Moreover, when it comes to using a mobile phone to compare in-store prices with online prices of the same product – known

as “showrooming” - a larger number of respondents (55%) admitted having done so at least once.

Showrooming is more pop-ular among men (61%) than women (51%). The research also found no substantial difference in its popularity between iOS and Android de-vice users, at 68% and 65% respectively. However, survey respondents who used a dif-ferent mobile platform to iOS or Android were less likely to “showroom” generally, with only 39% of non-iOS or An-droid users saying that they had done so. This suggests that retailers should prioritize their mCommerce apps and websites that are optimized for the iOS and Android plat-forms, ahead of other operat-ing systems such as Windows Phone and Blackberry.

News in brief

The Liquid Telecom Group

Telefónica

has extended its business tie-up with China’s largest mobile operator, China Mobile, and South Korean telecom operator KT, until January 2017. The tie-up originally was established in January 2011. The extension paves the way for the accelerated deployment of international LTE roaming services in China, Japan and Korea, starting with the December 2nd launch of KT’s data roaming service, which enables KT subscribers to use DOCOMO’s high-speed LTE data communication while traveling in Japan.

Telefonica’s VoIP subsidiary Jajah will cease to offer retail voice services from January 31, 2014. Telefonica purchased the company in 2009 for $207 million. Four years on, customers will no longer be able to make any calls through any of Jajah’s services, including the Jajah.com website and Jajah Direct.

Orange Polska is Orange S.A.’s biggest subnetwork in Northeast Europe. Huawei has cooperated with Orange Polska since 2011 providing mobile backhaul solutions for the company.

TM

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) signed a wholesale bandwidth collaborative deal for TM Next-Gen Backhaul Services with Malaysian mobile operators Celcom and DiGi. TM will provide wholesale bandwidth connectivity for the aggregation and access sites jointly owned by Celcom (via Celcom Networks) and DiGi, covering a span of between 3,000 and 3,500 kilometres in Peninsular Malaysia. This forms an important part of the on going network collaboration initiative between Celcom and DiGi announced in early 2011 with the joint ambition to roll out more than 10,000 kilometres of fibre network nationwide.

will acquire EdgeCast, a content delivery networks provider. Verizon Digital Media Services will integrate EdgeCast capabilities to improve and increase its ability to meet the exponential growth in online digital media content, as well as broaden its portfolio of site acceleration services for digital enterprises. The Verizon and EdgeCast boards of directors have approved this acquisition and Verizon hopes to finalize it in early 2014.

Ericsson

has signed a contract with TELUS for the development and deployment of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The implementation of Ericsson’s IMS technology will enable TELUS to offer convergent services in voice, data and video calling over both wireline and wireless networks to customers across Canada. Ericsson’s IMS will allow TELUS to leverage the latest telecommunications developments, equipping the Canadian carrier with the most innovative technology.

Technology firms are increas-ingly turning to mobile adver-tising as a channel to reach their target audiences, with growth of 132 per cent since last year, whilst IT decision makers were the most frequently tar-geted audience by Technology advertisers, according to the latest campaign and platform data for Q3 from Millennial Media's S.M.A.R.T. (Scorecard for Mobile Advertising Reach & Targeting) report.

Compared to B2C advertisers,

Tech firms turn to mobile to engage IT decision makers

B2B brands in the Technol-ogy vertical are looking to target a very specific type of mobile user, and are uti-lising mobile audiences in order to effectively deliver relevant messages. Of the Technology advertisers on the Millennial Media plat-form in Q3:

• 40 per cent were net-works & systems brands, such as those selling enter-prise computing systems or information technology

solutions, often targeting IT decision makers

• Hardware advertisers ac-counted for 32 per cent of Technology advertisers in Q3, including manufacturers of computers, components and tools

• Video was included in almost a third (31%) of Tech-nology advertiser’s mobile campaigns in Q3, a greater rate than all advertisers (22%), with a primary aim to gener-ate brand awareness of prod-

ucts and services“B2B advertisers seeking to

reach business and IT decision makers are at an advantage in mobile as those consumers are more likely to own more than device for work and per-sonal use,” said Zac Pinkham, EMEA MD for Millennial Me-dia. “B2B technology brands are clearly capitalising on the unique targeting properties that mobile offers in order to reach their often-specific tar-get audience.”

Magyar Telekom has suc-cessfully acquired a total of 9 cable networks in Hungary during 2013. With a combined household coverage of 33,000, these smallernetworks have the capability of providing TV, broadband internet and voice services as well. As such, these transactions will further strengthen Magyar Telekom’s high speed internet coverage and market positions, in line with the company’s strategy. Total consideration for these acquisitions amounted to ca. HUF 850 million.

Magyar Telekom Group has taken over the services for customers of the acquired net-works, for whom the change in ownership does not bring any change in their subscribed ser-vices and they are not required anything to do. During the inte-gration process of the acquired networks Telekom will carry out the necessary network up-grades and service develop-ment. Following that, Magyar Telekom as the country’s sole integrated provider of fixed line and mobile services will offer its comprehensive service port-folio also to its new customers.

János Szabó, Magyar Tel-ekom’s Chief Financial Officer said regarding the acquisitions,

„The nine successfully com-pleted deals are an indication that Magyar Telekom’s acqui-sition activities have acceler-ated significantly this year. Thanks to the cable networks acquired, Telekom’s high speed internet services reach 33 thousand more households all over the country. As a re-sult our acquisition activities contribute significantly to ad-ditions in Magyar Telekom’s customer base using fixed line services.”

As Hungary’s largest tel-ecommunication provider Magyar Telekom, thanks to the acquisitions, further in-creases its high speed internet (HSI) coverage, strengthens its market positions, improves its efficiency and competi-tiveness, offering advanced and innovative services to its new customers too. Telekom sees further acquisition op-tions in Hungary’s cable and access market, which is in the phase of consolidation, and it intends to continue its suc-cessful acquisition activities contributing to the achieve-ment of the company’s stra-tegic targets and creating sig-nificant value for customers and shareholders.

Anite, a global leader in wireless equipment testing technology, today announced that it has launched full sup-port for the Global Certifica-tion Forum (GCF) LTE data throughput performance testing requirements. This will enable mobile operators and device manufacturers to cost-efficiently test the data throughput performance of new devices in real-world con-ditions.

Subscribers expect to ac-cess more data intensive mo-bile services on the move and mobile operators are keen to verify the performance of new mobile devices before market introduction in order to en-sure end-users’ expectations are met.

Having an open 3GPP standard for measuring data throughput performance (such as download speeds) al-lows device manufacturers to verify that performance ear-lier in a device’s R&D lifecycle and be confident that results remain relevant to a wide range of operators.

The test cases measure the application layer data throughput performance of a mobile device by replicat-ing various challenging real-

Anite LTE testing cuts verification costs

world propagation conditions, such as those caused by fad-ing and multi-path reflections. These conditions are created in a repeatable laboratory en-vironment using Anite’s Con-formance Toolset, based on the Anite 9000’s integrated fading capability. This provides a cost effective upgrade to existing Anite protocol test systems.

PTCRB, the wireless device certification forum run by North American mobile opera-tors, is expected to adopt simi-lar requirements in the coming months and Anite’s Conform-ance Toolset customers can use the same platform to run PTCRB mandated data perfor-mance tests.

"Device manufacturers and mobile operators now have ac-cess to complete GCF LTE data performance testing capability as a simple upgrade to their ex-isting conformance test solu-tions, which is acknowledged as the industry’s most reliable and easy to use conformance testing solution," says Paul Beaver, Products Director at An-ite.

He continues: "This will lead to more cost-effective develop-ment of devices that are more likely to meet end-users down-load speed expectations."

Carrier Call was founded in 2003 in Switzerland with the goal to revolutionize the way, telecommunication carriers work in the international and national interconnect wholesale business. The company's award winning XCarrier® platform enables operators to manage their inter-carrier trading relationships more effectively. Every carrier knows that the systems which underpin the trading and exchange of international voice traffic are exceedingly complex. But few appreciate the deep linkages that exist between all these business processes and systems. Because these systems are so closely intertwined, a single error in one application can have serious implications further on down the line. Carrier Call understands these linkages - the company is staffed with highly experienced telecoms software executives - and has developed from scratch a solution that can manage all voice traffic processes in one package. For further information or to schedule a live demo of the product, please contact Ms. Claudia Toth on +41 564434106 or fax +41 564434101 or send an e-mail to [email protected]
