FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK Major Gifts On behalf of the Trustees of the Sturgis Library, I would like to acknowledge three generous donors who left bequests to the Sturgis Library in the past year. These bequests have substantially increased our endowment, which provides us with long-term financial security. The donors were: Caroline “Ceeb” Leech, a longtime volunteer at the Sturgis Library, who was also actively involved with the Chatham Chorale; John G. “Bunny” Howard, Jr., who was founder of Howard Boat Co., and a lifetime member of the Barnstable Yacht Club; and Edward Norman, who was an artist and served as Chief of the Deerfield, Massachusetts and Chatham, Massachusetts Fire Departments. He and his wife Marcia illustrated a number of books on Cape Cod and marine flora and fauna. We are most grateful to each of them for recognizing the value of the Sturgis Library – to the community, to researchers, and to library supporters like you.

New in the Archives Assistant Director Marcella Curry and I have recently completed the recataloging of our historic map and chart collection. This fascinating collection consists of nearly 100 original and reproduction maps of Cape Cod and New England, as well as charts of local waters and a historic expedition to the Northwestern United States in the 1790s. Of note are some particularly rare maps of New England from the 1750s, originally part of the Stanley Smith collection. There are also two Barnstable maps from 1926 that still have current local interest today titled Areas That Should be Sewered to Prevent an Epidemic in the Town of Barnstable, Cape Cod, Mass. and Business and Where it is Misplaced in the Town of Barnstable, Cape Cod, Mass. These issues still face us more than eighty years later. Most of the maps in our collections are available for use by researchers. For a complete

Shutters This fall Seaport Shutters of Brewster installed shutters on the front of our original building. Since its early days as a nineteenth-century library, the building has had shutters; they were only removed in the last twenty years or so when the old shutters fell into disrepair. Now the shutters are back, and complete an extensive exterior renovation project. Our sincere thanks to the Friends of Sturgis Library and numerous individual donors who funded the shutter project. How Can I Support the Sturgis Library and Protect

My Financial Future ?

Many of our supporters have chosen to express their appreciation for Sturgis by making an annual gift to the Library. Through the years, several of the Library family have included us in their wills. The Board of Trustees looks to the future of the Library and the need to grow the endowment. We are pleased to announce the establishment of a formal planned giving program with a generous gift of an annuity from Trustee Jim Hinkle.

The Sturgis Library must raise 60% of its annual operating budget through private donations from people like you. In addition to our new Charitable Gift Annuity Program, the following list includes some additional ways donors have helped to support library programs and services. today, and donations to our Endowment Fund provide us with security for the future. Memorial donations can be given to honor a loved one or friend.

COMING SOON! This spring, the Friends of the Sturgis Library’s Bookstore and Gift Shop will be relocating to the main area of the library, right off the lobby. This move will take place with as little disruption to Library services as possible, and, with luck, no downtime for the bookstore. This move is taking place as part of our ongoing efforts to continuously improve Library service while maximizing use of our building space and preserving our historic building and collections. We are confident that the move will accomplish a number of goals: • Provide a prominent and accessible location for the Friends Bookstore,

giving the store and the Friends themselves more visibility to the public. Improved visibility should increase revenue from book and gift sales, and promote interest in volunteer opportunities with the Friends of the Library.

• Allow the staff to easily monitor the Bookstore when it is not staffed by Friends volunteers.

• Protect our historic special collections, and provide us with additional space on the main level of the library for special collections shelving, display, seating, and research.

• Preserve our historic building, which was originally built in 1644, and is now the oldest building housing a library in the country.

We thank you in advance for bearing with us during bookstore construction, and offer our thanks to all the bookstore volunteers for their dedication to the Sturgis Library.

Sturgis Silhouettes

and Hooper Books

Donated by Mary Bundy

Mary Bundy of New York City, the donor of pastel portraits of Mrs. William Sturgis and two of her daughters featured in our last newsletter, has recently donated two silhouettes and a small collection of books owned by Samuel Hooper. The silhouettes depict Mrs. William Sturgis and Eliza L. Lothrop, and were cut by noted silhouette artist August Edouart during his visit to the United States in the 1840s. The collection of books belonged to Anne and Samuel Hooper, daughter and son-in-law of Library founder William Sturgis. Mrs. Bundy has also donated funds which will be used to help restore the frames on the portraits and silhouettes. Many thanks to Mrs. Bundy for her generous gifts. Thanks, too, to those of you who contributed to the Sturgis Portrait Restoration Fund. With your help, we are able to restore and preserve these works of art for another generation.


Greetings from the Friends of Sturgis Library!

The Friends have been very active this winter. In December the Library was beautifully decorated for the holiday by a group of Friends; a holiday book sale was held on December 1; and later in the month we sponsored a two-day bake sale. A special thank-you to those who donated homemade treats and other goodies, as well as to those who stopped by and purchased items to take home. The proceeds from all our sales benefit Sturgis Library. For example, in November we contributed $2,000 for the rebinding and preservation of books in the Library’s special collections. The Friends ushered in the New Year with a crowd-pleasing program on Sunday, January 6th. Presented by Cape Cod’s own Feelin’ Good Barbershop Quartet, “Music for a Winter Afternoon” was a big hit and a great start to our 2008 calendar of events. As announced on page 4, the Friends Bookstore and Gift shop will be moving to a newly renovated area near the Library's main entrance. The Friends will be celebrating the Grand Opening of our new shop with festivities, refreshments, and special offers. Check the Sturgis website and Friends’ publicity for date, time, and details of this grand opening event. Are you interested in working in our newly revamped Bookstore and Gift Shop? Book Fair News Thank you one and all for helping to make the Friends Book Fair at Barnes and Noble Booksellers on November 16th and 17th such a resounding success. You participation was greatly appreciated and enabled us to earn over $2,000 for the Sturgis Library.

Spain Trip Raffle Our fall Spain Trip Raffle Drawing was held on November 4th, 2007, and we are grateful to the

many people who purchased tickets for this fundraiser. Our Spanish-themed raffle party was held despite the lack of electricity after our fall Nor’easter/hurricane. We lit a lot of candles, turned on the gas fireplace, and enjoyed classical guitar music, wonderful appetizers, and the company of friends and neighbors. Special thanks go out to the following people and businesses for donating goods and services to this event:

Join us for the third annual Trustee Dinner, held this year at the Dolphin Restaurant in Barnstable Village on Sunday, April 6th at 6 PM. Join friends, neighbors, and fellow library supporters for a fun, relaxed evening of dining. There will be a choice of fine foods, a cash bar, goodie bags, a raffle, and more! A portion of the proceeds goes to support library services and programs. On the menu: A choice of Prime Rib, Baked Cod with Lobster Sauce, or Chicken or Vegetarian Alfredo. Desserts include cheesecake with caramel topping, or rich chocolate mousse cake. Appetizers, salad, crusty bread, coffee, and tea round out the menu. Tickets will go on sale in February, and are $50 each, which includes appetizers, entrée, dessert, coffee and tea, and gratuity. Get your tickets early — seating is limited!
