On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember our fallen heroes. Some might say that their deaths were tragic and in
vain. Yet, those heroes went to wars looking ahead. They were not afraid to
lose themselves in something bigger than themselves. The promise of freedom, to them, was worth even the price of their
deaths. In leaving their lives on the battlefields of the past, they gave all of us a chance for a greater future. Let us
remember them with love and give special honor to their memory.

Sixth Sunday of Easter Theology has two words to describe the space between God and us - transcendent and immanent. When we say God is transcendent, we
speak of the One whose ways are not our ways, the placer of stars and maker of mountains. This is God who transcends our understanding, whose being goes beyond what we can know. When we say God is
immanent, we mean His nearness to us. This is the way Jesus speaks of himself in today's Gospel. "Whoever loves me keeps my word...and we
will come to him and make our dwelling with him." The Hebrews saw God as intimately involved with the fate of their people. But for all His care, God was still distant to most. He spoke through prophets and was represented in blazes of fire and pillars of cloud. Priests offered animal sacrifice to atone for the nation's sins.
While we still know that God is transcendent - any morning's resplendent sunrise confirms this - Jesus introduces us to himself in a
new way. Not only does Jesus walk among us, but the Holy Spirit dwells within us. "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit...will teach you
everything, and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you!" How do you tend to view God? For many of us, the transcendent sense of a distant God might fill our perception. Today's Gospel reminds us of something altogether different, something more intimate. Our God remains with us. He overcomes the confusion of the world and speaks peace to our troubled hearts. Our God is not far from us. The more we
remain connected to Him and love as He loved, the more we will experience His nearness. We can have confidence in His presence and
rest in His encouragement: "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid."

LOSE YOURSELF

We are quickly coming to the “beginning of the end” in terms of our school year. We have already celebrated a few “lasts”: the Athletic Awards Banquet, the Honors/Awards Banquet to name a couple. Each day that we move to the last day of the school year, our students, especially our eighth graders, are saying to themselves, “This will be the last time that I do this.”
There is nothing inherently wrong with that as long as it does not trap us in a feeling of moroseness. If we begin to think that we are living the last of things, we will forget that to which we have been pointed from our conception: the future. Life is not about endings but about beginnings.
Even as our grade school, high school, and college parishioners look toward their last days of school, they also realize that there is something else that awaits them. For our eighth graders, it is high school. For our high schoolers, it is college or trade school. For our collegians, it might be graduate school. Sooner or later, it will also be employment.
We must look ahead. The looking ahead fills us with great excitement and motivates us to work for the future. The future is definitely bigger than us yet, if we lose ourselves in that something bigger, we will always be willing to take a new direction, to search for a different path, or to remind others that our present reality does not have to be our permanent reality.
As we continue our Easter season, we are mindful of the fact that Jesus helped us to break away from the present reality of sin and death. By His death and resurrection, Jesus effectively destroyed death and restored life. There is nothing that holds us back from grasping onto the hope and promise given to us by the Lord.

Our limited human understanding cannot begin to understand the immense power of God. Instead of trusting in God, we think

Scholarship, Stewardship, Leadership and Character. We congratulate these students for their diligent studies, charity towards others, willingness

Summer Custodial Worker This part-time summer position in the custodial department
requires applicants to be able to lift and move heavy objects and help with general custodial tasks.

2019/2020 Tuition Assistance The Diocese of Gary would like to announce that tuition
assistance applications for the 2019/2020 school year are open. FACTS Management will continue to provide and process our
tuition assistance applications. The applications are online only at the Diocesan website:
www.dcgary.org. You can find the application by clicking on the “Schools” tab and then clicking on the blue rectangle labeled
“Tuition Assistance Application”. There are no paper applications. Applications should be completed ASAP!
Tuition assistance is only open to Catholic families who are registered members of parishes within the Diocese of Gary.
You may complete an application if you have children entering grades kindergarten through twelve. Preschool students are not
eligible for tuition assistance. There is a $35 fee per family to apply.
If you need help, FACTS will have an email, phone number and chat line on the application website for customer service.

Festival Children's Game Tent We are seeking prize donations for the
Children’s Game Tent: New or gently used small toys, pencils, plush animals,
McDonald’s Happy Meal toys and Beanie Babies. Please call Linda Harle at

Memorial Day Mass Everyone is invited to St. John/St. Joseph Diocesan Cemetery’s
Annual Outdoor Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m.
The Mass will take place off 169th Street in the New 10 Acres, located at 1547-167th Street in Hammond.
A tent and chairs will be provided and the celebrant for this Mass will be Bishop Donald J. Hying.

will dedicate the new building for our St. Joseph Arimathea Mausoleum Complex.
