Help Police Dog

“Haywire” Get a

Bullet Proof Vest Hi Everyone,

This is Priscilla and I am

asking if you will feed me

for a very worthy cause!

If you were at Fido Fete,

you met Officer Stone and

Haywire, Spokane’s newest

police dog. Sadly, when

Haywire’s working and

chasing “perps” to keep us

safe he really needs the

protection of a bullet proof

vest, but he can’t afford it.

They are really pricey!

SOOO, I will be sitting on

the counter in the lobby

asking you to put money in

my tummy to help raise

funds for a bulletproof vest

for canine officer, Haywire.

Thanks - Priscilla

Luncheon is hosted for new members.

Southside Membership

Yearly membership is $50 (individual) or

$75 for couples living in the same

household. A limited number of

scholarships are available for those

needing assistance with a year’s

membership. Call Betty at 535-0803.

A Note from Lisa I am excited to share three items of really good news. …exciting times ahead!

First, we have received a donation of a minivan. This means we won’t have to cancel tr ips

due to low number of travelers. We deeply appreciate this special gift from a generous

anonymous donor. Thank you so much! Second, thanks to a federal grant through STA, a new

large van will be on its way to the Center in a few months,! It will have overhead racks,

wheelchair lift, back up camera and so much more. We will pay it forward and donate old

“Bessy” to UGM. (BTW, we still need driver’s. If you are interested in being a volunteer

driver, please see April, our new travel assistant, and sign up. There are lovely perks (i.e. free

tickets, lunches) as a van/car driver on day trips.) Third, we are finally getting our multicultural

capital improvement grant from the City. This will help us make much needed improvements

and repairs to the Center as well as replacing equipment that is old, broken or about to break.

This should include new convection ovens, replacing our sound system in the ballroom, new

flooring in the rooms, additional security cameras, patio awning etc.

Another feel good note: so many members were taken with Spokane K9 Officer Haywire who

made an appearance at Fido Fete in June that they asked if we could raise funds for a bullet

resistant vest for him and, of course, we said yes! So, Pricilla our money box pig (don’t tell her

she is a money box) is again on our front counter ready to take any change or bills you might

have as a donation to this wonderful cause. Custom fitted canine vests average $3,500.

I hope you have been able to come to our lunches. The food and entertainment has been

excellent, thanks to our many volunteers and our lunch committee. In September, we honor

you, our volunteers, and in October we honor our Centenarians!

OMG Facts: Chocolate milk was originally sold as medicine; Rats laugh when you tickle them (I’ll take

their word on that); George Washington grew marijuana in his garden; Swearing helps to reduce

pain…damn it!; Kissing can reduce tooth decay; An ostrich’s eye is bigger than it’s brain; Mosquitoes

can fly through rain drops without getting hit; In Malaysia it is often a custom to protect babies from

disease by bathing them in beer; In Paraguay, dueling is still legal, as long as both parties are blood

donors; and in WA State you must ask permission before sleeping in someone else’s outhouse

(could be an important safety tip!) Lisa Rosier, Executive Director

A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR 2020 BOARD NOMINEES

DENNIS W. ANDERSON Dennis is a licensed mental health counselor. After a long career

with organizations throughout the Spokane area, including St.

Luke’s Rehabilitation Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center,

Deaconess Medical Center, and Group Health Northwest. He is

currently in private practice and a lecturer at Eastern Washington

University. He’s a lifelong Spokane resident and has been

involved in community and neighborhood projects for many

years. He joined the Center after retiring from EWU. He was

raised in a family that played pinochle at every family gathering,

but because his wife didn’t like to play cards he jumped on the

chance to join the Center’s pinochle group. He also looks

forward to developing a Community Garden near the center and

is working actively to make that happen.

SUE BELOTE Sue is currently the office manager at Hennessey Funeral Home

& Crematory in Spokane. She has lived in Spokane for the last

40 years and has an AA Degree from Spokane Community

College. After working at a prominent local law firm for seven

years she worked at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home and then

moved to Hennessey Funeral Home, where she has been for the

last 15 years. Sue takes great pride in her role as office manager

at Hennessey and considers it a privilege helping families during

the most sensitive time in their lives. Sue loves volunteering in

the community. She enjoys walking, scrapbooking, reading,

cheering on the Seattle Mariners and Gonzaga Bulldogs, and

yearly trips to Las Vegas. Being a Grandma brings her great joy.

BRYNNE MALONE Brynne attended high school at Gonzaga Prep and graduated in

Secondary Education from the University of Washington. After

teaching history at Gonzaga Prep, he became a stockbroker and

investment advisor and became Vice President of Investments at

Nelson Securities and Kemper Securities. His next career was

building a Guardianship Agency which advocated on the behalf

of vulnerable citizens by acting as their legal guardian. After

growing a successful Guardianship agency he joined a small

home health care agency in Spokane providing nursing services

and therapies to homebound patients. Under his management this

agency was recognized by Medicare as a Top 500 agency each of

the years of his tenure. The agency also exceeded all financial

and quality of care measures established by Medicare. He is now

the agency’s Regional Manager of Sales and Operations for

Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Washington. He says the

opportunity to serve and be a resource to families in need brings

great joy and purpose to his life. He looks forward to working

tirelessly to make Southside Community Center a wonderful

place of interaction and community.

YOU CAN BE AN ANGEL! A Note to Retired Teachers & Others Members from Lynn Terry I am writing as a retired teacher asking for your help.

The Center is partnering with EWU and Franklin

Elementary School to provide a special science event

called Book It! Kids – Wiggly Science – on October 2.

Seventy percent of Franklin students qualify for free lunch. This

means many students and their parents will not be able to attend the

event unless we sponsor them. Remember children like this from

your classrooms? I am asking for donations to support attendance

for children who are financially limited from educational, fun

experiences. The cost is $5.00 per person.

When you send your check or pay at the Center, be sure to mention

the contribution is for Franklin Sponsorship! If you wish to charge

your gift, call the Center at 535-0803 and ask for Betty. There is a

$25 limit for credit card payments. Thank you so much for your

support. I am starting the fund with $100.

Tips from “Adopt-A-Cop” Jake Willard,

Neighborhood Resource Officer Hi All, I just returned from a needed vacation, but

want to take time to give you some tips — old perhaps

but worth repeating.

With the good weather comes an increase in property

crimes. These types of crimes are often avoided if we pay a little

more attention to our surroundings and property. Crimes of

opportunity are best battled by not giving them the opportunity.

Remember—always be vigilant, and aware of your surroundings and

property. Never leave valuables inside your vehicles; always double

check to make sure your vehicle is locked and secure. Apply this to

your home too. Don't advertise your valuable stuff for all to see, close

your blinds, make sure your house is locked and secured when

leaving, and close your garage doors. Also, you are probably familiar

with the phrase "if you see something, say something." This is true!

Report anything you see that looks suspicious, or out of the norm.

You can call me with any neighborhood issues and/ or concerns

509-625-3310 or 509-625-3326 and enjoy the rest of summer and the

time with your loved ones.

Please Don’t Wait Till the Last Minute Sign Up and Pay for Your Travel Adventures Early! We do not want to disappoint members by cancelling advertised outings.

However, if a trip does not have a minimum number of four (4) people signed

up and paid prior to the trip, we are forced to cancel it. The Center cannot

If you plan to go on a trip:

Sign up early and prepay with check, cash, or credit card.

(Credit card charges must be $25 or more.)

Contact the Center, if you have any questions on a specific trip.

Ask your friends and family to join you on a trip.
