SatExpo, Italy

For many years SatExpo in

Vicenza/Italy was the annual

get-together of the satellite

industry in southern Europe.

But after pay TV provider Sky

Italia had established almost

a monopoly for satellite recep-

tion, FTA reception in Italy has

become an ever smaller seg-

ment.

Most traditional satellite compa-nies in Italy saw their revenue

shrink and thus couldn’t afford

a presence at the exhibition.

Now SatExpo is back and

has moved to Rome. We asked

Ilaria Pivato of exhibition organ-

iser Promospace why the eventvenue is now Rome.

  “Well, in the past many for-

eign visitors and participators

had no idea where Vicenza was.

Some even confused Vicenza

with Venice.” Actually, Venice

is not far away, but getting to

Vicenza was a bit difficult and

visitors from abroad often com-

plained that Vicenza didn’t have

its own airport.

  “Rome is an ideal location,” 

explains Ilaria Pivato and con-tinues that “the fairground of 

  ‘Roma Fair’ is located close to

Rome’s Fiumicino international

airport which all major airlines

fly to.” 

And there’s another impor-

tant reason for choosing Rome

for this exhibition, as Paolo Dalla

Chiara, President of SatExpo

explains: “Space Technology is

the new topic of the exhibition,

and many leading Italian com-

panies such as ESRIN (Euro-pean Space Research Institute)

and ASI (Italian Space Industry

Association) are headquartered

in Rome. So it was a logical step

to make a decision in favour of 

Rome.” 

HDTV is a dominant theme

at SatExpo, but mobile TV over

the S band or satellite IPTV also

play important roles. EUTEL-

SAT’s new orbital position at 9°

East is spearheading these new

technologies with new offers

that are presented at SatExpo.

confirmed their presence whenthis report was filed: Telespazio,

Thales Alenia, ESA, Eutelsat,

Skylogic, Telemar, Viasat, Tele-

system, Auriga, Unaohm, RAI,

Thuraya, Inmarsat, Hellassat,

Televes, HD Forum, Ariane-

space, EADS and many more

can be found on that list.

Visiting Rome for SatExpo will

certainly be time well spent.
