The mission of On Our Own, Inc. is to promote wellness and recovery by empowering indi-

viduals with psychiatric disabilities to reach their maximum potential through advocacy and peer

support. We encourage self-help by providing education, information and referral to community

agencies and services. Recently, On Our Own, launched a "wellness" initiative . Consumerswith serious chronic

    mental illness are dying

    an average 25 years ear-

    lier than the general

    population, often due to

heart disease, diabetesand problems related to

    side effects of long term

    use of medications,

    smoking, obesity and

    lack of holistic medical

    care, according to re-

    search by a national

    mental health council.

    On Our Own, Inc. has

    begun forming a peer-

    driven task force to de-

velop health and lifestylemeasures and resources

to increase the lifespan of those affected by mental illness. The task force will include persons with

mental illness, their families, advocates, physicians, mental health professionals, physical fitness

    experts and others.

We at On Our Own, Inc. have been embracing our new wellness and recovery model by partici-

pating in various health topics and educational activities. Our members are more conscientious of

what they consume as healthy snacks are replaced by previous unhealthy choices within the cen-

ters. Workshops such as Trauma Informed Care, Diabetes Prevention and Management, Motiva-

tional Vitamins, Smoking Cessation, Conflict Mediation, Mental Health First Aid, High Blood

Pressure Management, Diet and Nutrition, Integrated Health Care preparation, and Suicide Pre-

vention educates the Baltimore consumers of mental health services even more which attributes toour growth towards wellness and recovery.

.In Our Work, In Our Lives

    The Anti-Stigma Project presents

Within the mental health and substance abuse communities, a very real and powerful phe-nomenon is at work. It can damage therapeutic, professional, and personal relationships, threaten the effectiveness of services and treatment, and often keeps people from seeking the

help they need. That phenomenon is stigma.

The interactive workshop, Stigmain Our Work, in Our Lives is designed to reduce stigma-tizing attitudes, behaviors, and practices within the mental health and substance abuse com-

    munities.

Through a variety of learning approaches, you will:Identify stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors and discuss their impact on the design, deliv-

    ery and receipt of services

Examine the impact of stigma on the lives of mental health professionals, family members, and consumers

Formulate a plan to combat stigma

Talk, listen and learn in a comfortable atmosphere
