The Next ChapterIt was just over a year ago that we took a major step in extending our reach into the community and expanding the range of programs and content we offer with the opening of the WGBH Studio at the Boston Public Library (BPL) in Copley Square.

And it’s been quite a year! Since the studio’s inaugural broadcast of Boston Public Radio, we have been inviting the public in on a daily basis to join us, interact with us, share their perspectives and connect in a way that informs our work.

Our unique partnership with the BPL, another of Boston’s major cultural institutions, has given us an extraordinary live platform for bringing our journalism, arts, education and other innovative programming to the WGBH

audience and library visitors alike. Broad-casting and creating content in the heart of downtown means that community members now have access to their public media as it is being created, which allows us to engage with them in fresh, new ways.

“In its first year, the library studio has evolved nicely into a vibrant and interactive space for the exchange

of ideas and the cultivation of meaningful relationships with our community,” said Ben Godley, WGBH’s COO, who led the innovative move.

People of all ages from communities and neighborhoods across the region, as well as visitors from all over the world, have come through our studio and engaged with us as we broadcast live shows such as Boston Public Radio, produced podcasts such as The Scrum, and hosted Facebook Live events, NOVA Science Cafés and musical performances ranging from Chamber Music to A Celtic Sojourn to Guster. We’ve developed a special series called Hear at the Library, using this dynamic space to listen to what our community has to say about important topics of the day. We even celebrated Arthur’s 20th year with the library’s children’s reading room! And our partner in the space, the Newsfeed Café, adds the “food for thought” to our broadcasts.

If you haven’t seen the studio yet, it’s time you stop in and visit. Without your support, none of it would be possible. Thank you for helping us make it happen.

Bringing You the WorldThe World Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. World also pro-duces such original series as Local, USA, featur-ing diverse stories culled from public television stations and independent

producers nationwide, and the award-winning America ReFramed, a showcase for independent films by and about communities of differ-ence. In November, we shine the World Channel spotlight on Native American Heritage Month.

Stories to ShareTake a look behind the scenes of The Telling Project, a national performing arts organization, as it reaches out to veterans of the Vietnam War. The idea behind the organization is to bridge the gap between civilians and veterans, and it uses theater as a way to structure that conversation. The one-hour program follows the cast—including former Army nurse Mary Beth Crowley,

Marine veteran Ken Plant and Kang Vang, the son of a Laos Army officer—through interviews, time with families and friends, and rehearsals, culminating in a powerful performance of sharing and healing.Remembering Vietnam: The Telling ProjectFri, 11/3 at 9pm

Hometown HeroesFor more than three years, the Northern Diné Youth Committee has worked to make their hometown of Shiprock, New Mexico, a better place. Their founder, Graham Beyale, has led the charge. His goal has been to develop a positive environment for Navajo youth so that they can work together for the common good. Even though members of the group have been ridiculed for thinking too big, they have proven the naysayers wrong. Follow these young movers and shakers as they actually make a difference in their community.Local, USA/Mayors of ShiprockMon, 11/6 at 8pm

Saving the VulnerableMeet George Dull Knife, a Lakota teen growing up on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation. This documentary traces George’s path to activism, inspired by his family’s history of fighting for justice for Native Americans. His

focus: shutting down liquor stores in Whiteclay, a tiny town of 10 people that exists only to sell beer to the reservation. With 5 million cans sold a year, the results have been devastating. But tribal activists are fighting back to stop the exploitation of its most vul-nerable population.America ReFramed/ On a Knife EdgeTue, 11/7 at 8pm

Veterans Day WWII Marathon Remember our World War II heroes on Veterans Day with a series of docu-mentaries that pays tribute to their valor. Day of Days: June 6 recalls the moment in history when thousands of Allied servicemen landed on the shores of northern France, tasked with liberating Western Europe from Nazi tyranny. Ghost Army tells the true story of American soldiers who used their skills as artists to trick the enemy about the location of US troops using sound effects and visual illusions. Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades describes one day in 2015 when survivors on both sides of the Battle of Iwo Jima returned for the last time in a reunion of honor.Day of Days: June 6Sat, 11/11 at 10am

Nature’s CaretakersIndigenous people across California have used their knowledge of the envi-ronment to shape and tend to the land for 1,000 years. In the process, they developed a deep understanding and appreciation for all plants and animals

and for their own place in the circle of life. Learn how humans play a role to create balance in nature and how traditional prac-tices can inspire a new generation of Californians to take care of their precious environment.Tending the Wild Sun, 11/19 at 8pm

WGBH News Heads South for Hurricane CoverageThis hurricane season was one of the worst on record, and WGBH News was there on loca-tion to report on the devasta-tion.

Craig LeMoult, WGBH News environmental reporter, traveled to Houston to support the Houston Public Media newsroom in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. During his two weeks there, he collaborated with local reporters and editors on different strategies for coverage and helped manage incoming requests from other stations. LeMoult’s original reporting aired on 89.7 WGBH Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Later in the month, 89.7 WGBH carried WLRN’s coverage of Hurricane Irma as it made landfall in Miami, bringing the local public media station’s reporting and voices to Boston airwaves throughout the first day of the storm.

In Hurricane Irma’s aftermath, WGBH News’ Edgar B. Herwick III traveled to Miami to assist in WLRN’s newsroom. While there, he worked on stories from around the region, including one about how Miami’s Caribbean community banded together to organize relief efforts for the impacted islands.

“Craig and Edgar stepping in to lend a hand and contribute substan-tive local coverage during these major storms demonstrates what public media is all about,” said WGBH News Director Kate Zachry.

Music, Friends and FamilyBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

T here’s something about November that spurs musical memories and thoughts that revolve around the dinner table. Of course, Thanksgiving is

the probable cause of that. So, this year, WCRB is planning something new for that holiday weekend.

Start your Thanksgiving Day with Laura Carlo, who will bring you a special blend of music chosen just for that day. Then, join our family of hosts throughout the day as they provide the great classical soundtrack for the holiday with all its trimmings. It will be a beautiful day of music that fits with whatever your plans call for, and there is no better way to enjoy that music than accompa-nied by the WCRB team.

Then, for the balance of that holiday weekend, as we begin the transi-tion into the December holiday season, you’ll be able to enjoy music with a spotlight on friends and family. You’ll hear music by the Mozarts, father and son; the Mendelssohns, brother and sister; the Haydn brothers; the Schumanns, husband and wife; and the Bachs, father and son and son and son and so on! Plus, we’ll feature performers who we consider to be friends of WCRB, including our own Boston Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Andris Nelsons.

And speaking of the BSO, you won’t want to miss its weekly broadcasts (Saturdays at 8pm) live from Symphony Hall, hosted by Ron Della Chiesa. A full schedule is to the right. Another group of WCRB friends are the many ensembles and presenters who are part of our WCRB In Concert series, and the schedule of this month’s broadcasts (Sundays at 7pm) follows.

So, from our family to yours, have a Happy Thanksgiving and make sure to invite WCRB to your celebration! We don’t take any room at the table, but we still sound great.

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

Every week, WCAI invites listeners to join a science experiment of sorts on Living Lab Radio, a show at the intersection of science and culture with host Heather Goldstone. Launched in the summer of 2012, Living Lab Radio connects listeners with scientists for fresh perspectives on the week’s news

and a deeper—and deeply human—understanding of the world.

“Having a forum where current events are explored from a scientific perspective is important because science and scientists are widely misunder-stood by the American public,” said Goldstone, who holds a

Ph.D. in ocean science from MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “Science is nothing more and nothing less than a bunch of intelligent, curious, passionate and sometimes quirky individuals working to improve our collec-tive understanding of how the world works,” she said.

Goldstone produces the program along with Elsa Partan, who said that being based in Woods Hole gives them access to world leaders in such areas as oceanography and fisheries, to name a few. “Each week, we take a news story that really got us thinking about wider issues in science,” Partan said. “Then we find guests who can go deeper into those issues,” she said. Recent topics that have fascinated the duo include climate change and biomedical advances.

“Scientists are always in search of knowledge, by traveling to the darkest depths of the ocean or simply by walking out their back doors,” Goldstone said. And in the process, they may encounter new people or whole new species. “They may do everything right and yet gain nothing, or make a mis-take that leads to a surprising new discovery,” she said.

Tune in Mondays at 9am and 7pm to hear Living Lab Radio on WCAI and Sundays at noon on WGBH.
