Our Stories Through HistoryHappy 2019! We often start a new year with reflections on the past to better understand the present. This month we are doing just that with a variety of new programs that bring history to life and illuminate the many dimensions of the human condition.

We begin with the highly anticipated third season of Victoria (page 14), the historical drama starring the riveting Jenna Coleman as the young and fearless English monarch, premiering Jan. 13 at 9pm. Watch for new cast members featured in the eight episodes, as the royal couple faces turbulent and uncertain times with political and social upheaval across Europe.

On this side of the Atlantic, we follow a very different kind of royalty. Join us on Jan. 28 for The King (page 21), a captivating Independent Lens docu-mentary from filmmakers Eugene Jarecki and Errol Morris that traces the rise and fall of Elvis Presley as a metaphor for our country. Embark on a musical road trip behind the wheel of the rock ‘n’ roll legend’s very own 1963 Rolls-Royce to hear from a diversity of voices—from Rosanne Cash to Chuck D—about where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Our fascination with history doesn’t stop there. In Season Five of the ancestry series Finding Your Roots (page 11), our neighbor and colleague Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. (right, shown with author George R.R. Martin) explores the backgrounds of well-known figures whose descendants con-

nect them to Nigeria, Iran and India in a way that proves deeply empowering. And your treasured Antiques Roadshow (page 11) kicks off its 23rd season outdoors and at historic locations. Our first stop is Meadow Brook Hall, the stately historic home built by Matilda Dodge Wilson, one of the auto industry’s most remarkable women.

Then, the historic battle of humans vs. nature comes to life in The Swamp (page 16) from our acclaimed history series American Experience. “The story of the repeated efforts to tame the Everglades—and the often deadly results of those attempts—is a particularly cautionary tale in these days of increasingly violent natural disasters,” says American Experience Executive Producer Mark Samels.

Finally, we take a look at the darker side of history with The Dictator’s Playbook (page 14). In this six-part series of revealing portraits we gain an understanding of how authoritarians such as Kim Il Sung, Benito Mussolini and Saddam Hussein shaped powerful regimes.

Telling the stories of those who came before us, through drama and doc-umentary, shines a light on who we are and who we aspire to be. These are the kinds of exceptional WGBH programs that you make possible with your generous support. Thank you for being an important part of our past, and for beginning the new year with us as part of our future.

Bringing You the WorldThe World Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. A Reel FindWilliam Franklin Brinton, one of America’s first motion picture impresarios, traveled from Texas to Minnesota more than a century ago and introduced people in the Heartland to their first projected picture shows. In 1981, history

teacher Mike Zahs brings Brinton’s legacy back to life when he discovers three truckloads of his rare films, including footage of President Teddy Roosevelt and a lost relic from special effects pioneer Georges Méliès. See Zahs’ personal journey to tell the story of America’s barnstorming movie man and save these irreplaceable cinematic treasures from turning to dust.

New Lens on Race RelationsLocal filmmaker William H. “Smitty” Smith presents a new perspective to examine “the other tradition” of close cross-racial and cross-cultural friend-ships and collaborations that serve as the moral counterweights to the tradi-tion of racism in America. This thought-provoking film from the National Center of Race Amity at Wheelock College offers a new lens through which we can move together toward our nation’s motto e pluribus unum (of many, one) by emulating the inspiring and courageous friendships in American history. An American Story: Race Amity and the Other TraditionMon, 1/21 at 7pm

Survival GamesIn Camden, NJ, the crack of a bat and the laughter of children replace for just a moment the sounds of gunfire and drug dealers. In an area known as Heroin Highway, ex-convicts are teaching members of the North Camden Little League how to navigate the

Once a thriving place to live, the Motor City along Watkins’ postal route is still home to resilient Detroiters who share stories of resistance, pushing back against racial segregation in housing while living on reduced pensions in a bankrupt city. Poll Takes National Pulse on Higher EducationWGBH News recently released the findings of a national poll that surveyed perceptions of higher education, the role of race in admissions and efforts to protect students from sexual assault. The poll’s timing coincided with the court case against Harvard University by a group called the Students For Fair Admissions, which accused the Ivy League institution of discriminating against Asian American applicants by holding them to higher academic and personal standards.

One major finding of the poll that attracted much media attention was that a majority of Americans support a racially and ethnically diverse student body, and yet overwhelmingly, they do not support the use of race as a factor in college admissions.

Commissioned by WGBH News and conducted in August, the poll surveyed more than 1,000 adults ages 18 to 65 across a range of ethnic, geo-graphic and economic groups on the impact of colleges and universities on society, perceptions of public and private universities, and the role and value of higher education.

“Over the past year, Americans have been confronted with national news stories about sexual assault, free speech, racial conflict and mental health on college campuses,” said WGBH News Senior Editor Ken Cooper, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who oversaw the project.

“As the nation’s leading public media organization, WGBH and our newsroom have a unique perch in Boston, which is a major hub of the higher education industry,” Cooper said. “We decided it was critically important to our audience to take the country’s pulse on some fundamental questions about higher education, including whether or not Americans still value a college degree.”

The poll was talked about nationally in the days after the findings were released, with mentions in Bloomberg, The Boston Globe, NPR, Teen Vogue and Forbes.

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

Shake off the cabin fever, and mingle with fellow listeners when WCAI Pub Nights return this month.

Held at various restaurants and pubs throughout the Cape, Coast and Islands, WCAI Pub Nights began in 2004 as a way to get people out of the house during the cold winter months so they could spend a fun evening get-ting to know station staff, reporters and on-air hosts. Partner venues that host each event provide a cash bar and complimentary appetizers to create a friendly atmosphere where listeners can eat, drink and socialize.

Two years ago, WCAI added a twist to the winter tradition by introducing fun activities that highlighted WCAI’s local programs, such as Living Lab Radio, Poetry Sunday, Bird News, Local Food Report and The Point. Activities included quizzes that challenged listeners to guess bird calls, along with readings and a seed exchange to help get the conversation going.

Listeners have said they look forward to WCAI Pub Nights, so when the get-togethers were suspended in the late 2000s, there was a strong demand to get them back.

“WCAI Pub Nights provide a great opportunity for our staff and listeners to get out in the community and meet their Cape, Coast and Islands friends and neighbors,” said WCAI Development Manager Beth Liles, who oversees

and organizes the events. “There is no better way to spend a winter evening than in the warm company of each other, sharing our love for public radio.”

Six WCAI Pub Nights are scheduled between January and April across the region, including:

• Wednesday, Jan 9—The Well Tavern and Kitchen in Wellfleet• Wednesday, Jan 23—Greasy Luck Brew Pub in New Bedford• Wednesday, March 6—Ten Pin Eatery in Hyannis

“Last year’s WCAI Pub Night on Martha’s Vineyard included a seed exchange for the second year in a row, and we had a lot of fun putting together the various quizzes on backyard birds and science trivia,” Liles said. “We are work-ing on some new twists for this year’s pub nights, so stay tuned.”

Visit capeandislands.org/community-calendar to RSVP and to check on dates for upcoming WCAI Pub Nights.
