    1972 SUMMER OLYMPICS -MUNICH

    Waldi was the first official Olympic mascot.Created for the 1972Summer Olympics in Munich, he was a dachshund, a popular

    breed of dog from Germany. Waldi was designed by Otl Aicherand

    modeled on a real dog, a long-haired Dachshund named Cherievon Birkenhof. Waldi's head and tail were blue and his body was

    stripes of most of the other Olympic colors in order they are green,

    green, yellow, orange and green, excluding those colors related to

    the National Socialist Party. The course of the marathon was

    designed to incorporate the Waldi design, and during theconstruction phase of the 1972 Olympic stadium and village, Waldi

    was used in unofficial satirical posters.

    1976 SUMMER OLYMPICS -

    MONTRAL Amik was the mascot of the 1976 Summer Olympics. Amik

    was a beaver. In theAnishinaabe language, amikmeans

    "beaver." The beaver was chosen as mascot, because it

    represents hard work and it is also an animal native to Canada,

    the country where the games were held. The next Olympic

    mascot, at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, was

    'Mishka' - a brown bear. Mishka - or Misha as the bear was

    also named - is a diminutive for Russian name Mikhail

    (Michael).

    1980 SUMMER OLYMPICS -

    MOSCOW Misha, also known as Mishka orThe Olympic Mishka is the

    name of the Russian Bear, the mascot of the 1980 Moscow

    Olympic Games (the XXII Summer Olympics). He wasdesigned by children's books illustratorVictor Chizhikov.

    Misha is the first mascot of a sporting event to achieve large-

    scale commercial success as merchandise. The Misha doll

    was used extensively during the opening and closing

    ceremonies, had both a animated short film and appeared on

    several merchandise products, now things commonly

    practiced not only in the Olympic Games, also in the FIFA

    World Cup and others events' mascots.

    Sam the Olympic Eagle is the mascot of the 1984 SummerOlympics which were held in Los Angeles. He is a bald

    eagle, which is the national bird of the United States, wherethe games were held. He also shares the name ofUncleSam, another American symbol. Sam was designed byDisney Legend Bob Moore, an artist forDisney. Thischaracter is sometimes confused forEagle Sam, host of theformerDisneyland attractionAmerica Sings, and designed by

    animatorMarc Davis circa 1973, orSam the Eagle from TheMuppet Show. However, he is known as Eagle Sam inJapan, where an animated series of the same name ran inthe year preceding the Summer Olympics.

    1988 SUMMER OLYMPICS -

    SEOUL Hodori was the official mascot of the 1988 Summer Olympic

    Games in Seoul, South Korea.The stylized tiger wasdesigned by Kim Hyun as an amicableAmur Tiger, portrayingthe friendly and hospitable traditions of the Korean people,

    and the name Hodori was chosen from 2,295 suggestionssent in by the public.

    "Ho" is derived from the Korean word for tiger "horangi" and"dori" is a diminutive for boys in Korean. There was also afemale tiger named "Hosuni", but she was seldom used.

    "Hodori" is also the name of the Korean Tae-Kwon-DoNational Demonstration Team, which also uses the Hodoritiger as their symbol.

    1992 SUMMER OLYMPICS -

    BARCELONA Cobi was the official mascot of the 1992 Summer Olympics in

    Barcelona. He is a Catalan Sheepdog in Cubist style inspiredby the interpretations ofPicasso of a masterpiece fromVelzquez, Las Meninas. Cobi was designed by Javier

    Mariscal (1950-). The mascot was unveiled to the public in1987. His name was derived from the Barcelona OlympicOrganising Committee (COOB).

    Before and during the Games, Cobi was shown in a variety ofadvertisements for Olympic sponsors such as Coca-Cola,Brother Industries and Danone. He even had his own TV

    series, The Cobi Troupe. He also appeared on an extensiverange of souvenirs, dubbed Cobiana, which proved to be alucrative source of income. During the Games an inflatableCobi was tethered to the Barcelona waterfront.

    1996 SUMMER OLYMPICS -ATLANTA

    Izzy was the official mascot of theAtlanta1996 SummerOlympics. Named Whatizit (What is it?) at its firstintroduction at the close of the 1992 Summer Olympics in

    Barcelona, the animated character with the ability to morph

    into different forms was a departure from the Olympictradition in that it did not represent a nationally-significant

    animal or human figure.

    2004 SUMMER OLYMPICS -ATHENS

    "Athena" and "Phevos" were the Olympic mascots of the 2004Summer Olympics, held inAthens. The pair are one of the fewexamples of anthropomorphic mascots in the history of theOlympics. According to the official mascot webpage, their creationwas inspired by an ancient Greek doll and their names are linked to

    ancient Greece, yet the two siblings are children of modern times -Phevos and Athena represent the link between Greek history andthe modern Olympic Games.

    The mascots were named after the Greek gods (Athena) and(Apollo). Phevosis a transcription of the modern Greekpronunciation ofPhoebus, an epithet ofApollo. They were loosely

    modeled after an archaic Greek terra cottadaidalafrom the 7thcentury BC (below left), which was recommended by curators at theNational Archaeological Museum. The Athens 2004 OlympicOrganizing Committee claimed that the mascots represented"participation, brotherhood, equality, cooperation, fair play [and] theeverlasting Greek value of human scale."

    2008 SUMMER OLYMPICS -BEIJING

    The Fuwa were the mascots of the 2008 Summer Olympics inBeijing. The designs were created by Han Meilin, a famous

    Chinese artist. The designs were publicly announced by the

    National Society of Chinese Classic Literature Studies on 11

    November 2005 at an event marking the 1000th day before the

    opening of the games.

    There are five fuwa: Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and

    Nini. Together, the names form the sentence "Beijing huanying

    ni," which means "Beijing welcomes you". Originally named 'The

    Friendlies', they were promoted as 'Fuwa' when there wereconcerns the name could be misinterpreted.

    2012 SUMMER OLYMPICS -LONDON

    Wenlock and Mandeville are the official mascots for the 2012

    Summer Olympics and Paralympics being held in London, United

    Kingdom. The mascots were unveiled on 19 May 2010; this

    marks the second time (afterVancouver) that both Olympic and

    Paralympic mascots were unveiled at the same time. The

    mascots were created and designed by iris, a London-based

    creative agency. Wenlock and Mandeville are animations

    depicting two drops of steel from a steelworks in Bolton. They are

    named after the Shropshire town ofMuch Wenlock, which held a

    forerunner of the current Olympic Games, and Stoke MandevilleHospital, a facility in Buckinghamshire that initially organised the

    Stoke Mandeville Games, the precursor of the Paralympic

    Games.
