Get OUT! January Saws & Slaws NewsPeggy Stevens, Communication Chair and Board TreasurerYou’ve probably seen the California fires in the news lately. Maybe you even know someone who was affected? The Thomas fire, outside of Santa Barbara, is now the second largest in modern California history—burning over 272,000 acres (at the time of this writing), according to the County of Santa Barbara website. (For the math inclined, this equates to 425 square miles.) Thousands of people were placed under mandatory evacuation, voluntary evacuation or evacuation warning. It was recommended that anyone going outside wear protective N-95 masks over his or her nose and mouth because the air quality was so poor. Are you prepared to evacuate in the event of a wildfire or other disaster? You don’t need to live in fear to be prepared.Work with your family to make a planAt the bottom of this page (https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan) there are .pdf shareables to help your family to be prepared – Steps to make a plan, a wallet-sized family emergency communication plan, Pet owners guide, a short video, and other great resources.“Be informed. Make a plan. Build a kit. Get involved.” FEMA.

December 2017 Board of Directors MeetingWe had 10 people attend the December board meeting: Jody Dickson (President), Linda Martin (Vice President), Cesar Gellido (Advisor to the Board), Mick Coady (Secretary), Peggy Stevens (Treasurer), Rodger Ruge, Sue & Mike Fetters, Jane Marsolek and Megan Austin. It was great to have some new faces at this meeting, wanting to see how the group functioned and get more involved. Suggestions were made for better advertising, funding opportunities, and grants.2017 was a building year for Saws & Slaws as we moved to a sustainable business model and worked towards growing this community organization to be able to help more people to increase the safety of their homes and property through mountain neighborhood fire mitigation events. We operated in the black in 2017 and are happy to be carrying funds forward to start the new year. We are making considerations for equipment purchases to help our endeavors, but no formal decisions were made about purchases at our meeting. In the beginning of 2018, the Operations Team will be asked to fill out new position descriptions, budget requests, and board-aligned goals. Stay tuned for the date and time of the next Operations Team meeting that will probably be in late January or February. All are welcome to attend.

That’s why this big fire is hitting close to home for me. Stay safe out there. Be kind to each other.

WildAware - Small Cats - Big Cats By Jan Waddington Bobcats were seen on Begole Circle and also out on the flats. A Mountain Lion was also seen out on the flats and another was on spotted on Ranch Elsie. The Elk on the flats continue to be a delight, as well as a traffic problem. A photographer was able to compose a shot of the elk herd with the city of Denver in the background - it was so well done that it should show up on Denver’s Visitors Literature. Another exceptional photo caught the elk in mid-flight jumping over the fence. Elk were also seen occasionally on Chute Rd. The rut continued in the past month, with buck Mule Deer not paying any attention to traffic, chasing does hither and yon across the canyon. The male Black Fox, in the Ramona Rd. area, mated with a red fox (further proof that they are the same species). And, their two young are one black and one red. In some areas the black fox is referred to as a silver fox perhaps because in certain light, they may have a shine on their backs that could lead to the name - silver. The Short-tailed Weasel also has more than one common name. In winter, with its bright white coat and black tip on the tail, it may be called an Ermine. One showed up just off Twin Spruce. January is a great month to look for tracks - it’s amazing to look out in the morning and realize how many visitors passed by during the night. Thanks for staying in touch and call Jan

Canyon LitterbugsBy Norval Olson (canyon lover since 1966)As you may or may not know, twice a year there is a group of volunteers who gather at “the hall” for Canyon Cleanup. The CCCIA (Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association) is a sponsor of CDOT’s statewide ROADSIDE CLEANUP program. Tom Mulvany prepares for each cleanup by contacting CDOT and law enforcement to make sure they are aware. He transports and places CDOT warning signs so that motorists are cautious while the volunteers are working along the narrow highway shoulders. These folks (10 or 15 in number) then disperse up and down the canyon with their orange trash bags to gather up the litter that has appeared along State Highway 72 (as well as other roads in the canyon). The bags of litter and large trash items are then placed along the highway where CDOT later loads them up and transports them to the landfill. Of course, Tom also gathers the warning signs and returns them to CDOT after each event.Items found vary greatly from hubcaps, tires and other car parts to signs and clothing. One thing you can ALWAYS count on are alcohol containers. Beer cans, beer bottles,

beer boxes, hard liquor bottles (glass and plastic) – including many “airplane bottles” or “nips”, the small 50ml bottles. While gathering this litter on a recent Canyon Cleanup, I pondered why it would be that there are relatively few soda bottles or cans and few water bottles…. I estimated that overall, 80 percent of the litter was alcohol related. I thought, “what does this mean?” Why would it be that people who drink and drive (or maybe passengers?) decide to throw their containers out the window? Does drinking make them stop thinking or make them ignorant to what they are doing? Are they afraid that someone at their home will find out that they are drinking? But then, I really don’t understand why anyone litters!! Do they EXPECT that others will pick up after them and that the bottles, cans and other trash will not just keep piling up along the side of the road? Then there are the cigarette butts along the highway… acccckkkkkk! Here in our WUI (Wildland-Urban Interface)… here where a devastating fire WILL eventually happen… don’t get me started.I have no clue as to who does most of the littering… residents vs. visitors from “below.” I read something on Facebook/Coal Creek Speak recently that caught my attention (hope the author doesn’t mind): “It’s as if many of us love our community, except when we are occupying and operating a motor vehicle.” The discussion had to do with increased canyon traffic and population. I wonder if the statement also pertains to throwing trash out of your vehicle? I seriously doubt that highway litter bugs throw trash onto the floor of their homes! While gathering canyon litter, I’ve had bicyclists riding up the canyon (they go too fast downhill) say “Thanks” to me. Recently I had a man in a pickup SLOWLY drive by and say “Thanks for picking up”. I appreciate being appreciated. I bet you do too!

I don’t expect my commentary here to somehow stop the littering in our beautiful canyon but maybe, for those of you reading this, it will help you stop and THINK about the canyon litterbugs as well as all people who decide to litter anywhere… maybe you’ll even join us for the next Canyon Cleanup!

Emergency Preparedness Roundup – Winter SafetyBy Justin Bukartek, Boulder Office of Emergency ManagementWinter is finally upon us. The advent of the snowy season can mean a lot of things for mountain residents: nestling in for hibernation, snow-birding to Arizona (in which case you probably won’t even be reading this!), or needing a few extra minutes in the morning to warm up the vehicle before starting down the hill for work. But for all of us (minus those snowbirds), winter requires a little extra preparation. Here are some tips and reminders to set you up for success as temperatures stop and the white stuff starts to fall.Top off your propane. If you rely on propane to heat your home, run your kitchen stove or operate your water heater, it’s a good idea to top off your tank before the cold season hits. Fuel consumption increases in the winter months (as do the prices), so getting topped off helps avoid the risk of running out. Come February or March, having to wait 24-48 hours for a refill can feel like a very long time. Clean your chimneys. If you use a wood-burning stove to heat your home, you most likely already have your cords of wood prepped and easily accessible. But did you remember

to sweep your chimney this past fall? Cleaning your chimney removes the accumulation of soot and creosote that builds up in your flue. Allowing that stuff to linger can be enough to fuel a chimney fire that may damage the chimney and even spread to the roof and home.Bulk up your extra food and water. One doesn’t have to look back very far to know that our canyon can be the brunt of a winter storm. When we get that 55” dumping, the last thing you want to do is run out to the store for dinner. Making sure you have a few extra jugs of water and some nonperishable food stocked goes a long way in preparing you if we get the big one that knocks out power for 2-3 days. Check your vehicle’s tires. This one is self-explanatory and more of a reminder, but if you haven’t already it’s definitely time to change over to your studded tires, dig the tire chains out from the shed, or finally replace those bald tires you’ve been squeaking by with. Losing traction around the S-curve is not where you want to be this winter. And it goes without saying- keep the speeds down!Get prepped for snow removal. It’s time to break out the snow shovels. Do you have one in your vehicle to dig yourself out? Not a bad idea if you have the room. Buy some salt that you can throw down and help prevent slipping during daily treks to the mailbox. If you haven’t changed the oil in your snow blower since last season, it might be a good idea to do that too. For those of you hiring a snowplow to service your driveway, make sure you’re on their schedule. Don’t wait until the first big snowstorm to call because it’ll be too late (and they’ll likely be booked up).Be safe this new year!

UNDUE INFLUENCEIn many cases where a Will is contested, the claim of “undue influence” is presented as a cause for asking the Court to invalidate a Last Will and Testament (“Will”). Undue Influence has been proved where at

the time of preparation or execution of the Will, a beneficiary of such Will was actively involved in the preparation or execution of the Will. The presumption is the Will is a product of undue influence. In other words, if someone goes to an attorney to do a Will and they bring a child or any other Will beneficiary with them who tells them what to say in the Will and/or who to leave their money to, the Will may be invalidated because it is a product of undue influence. When someone comes to my office to have a Will prepared and they bring others with them, this may cause a problem. It is important that a person making a Will can tell the attorney what property he or she owns, who is in their family and who they want to leave their property to in the Will. I understand that many clients want children to accompany them to my office to discuss preparing a Will because they want another set of ears to help them understand and remember the information I am discussing with them. But, it is important to me that the client can give me directions in

preparing his or her Will, not their children, spouse or others, so that the Will is not contested. After clients sign their Will, I ask them if they understand the documents they are signing and if anyone is forcing them to sign the document(s) and most clients laugh but I ask because I do not want your Will contested for undue influence. Some factors a court considers when determining whether undue influence may be inferred are:

Did others participate in the estate planning (the initial 1. appointment with the attorney); Was the Will maker susceptible to undue influence;2. Was there a confidential relationship between the Will 3. maker and the beneficiary; Was the Will preparation directed by one of the 4. beneficiaries;Did the Will maker or the beneficiary keep the execution 5. of the Will secret from other members of the family;Did the Will maker make unnatural changes to his or her 6. estate plan.

Please keep in mind, you may leave your property to whoever you wish, but it must be your decision and you must can make that decision.This article was written by Tamra K Waltemath of Tamra K. Waltemath, P.C.  This information is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice.  For specific questions, you should consult a qualified attorney. Tamra K. Waltemath is an elder law attorney focusing on wills, trusts, estate and trust administration, probate and non-probate transfers, guardianships and conservatorships. WHAT ABOUT THE LUNGS?Our lungs are closely relate to the heart, an important part of our body. They breath in Oxygen and exhale Carbon Dioxide, thus oxygen is used by our cells to create energy. Our left lung is a little smaller than the right one. The total length of airways through both lungs is 1500 miles. It’s no wonder it’s hard to push the air through that length. The two lungs contain 300 to 500 million tiny air sacks, you’s need a microscope to see each one. The total area of the lungs spread out would cover the size of a tennis court. Our lungs contain the smallest blood vessels in the body, equivalent to about 600 miles. The lungs are connected to the spinal cord and the sternum. So when we inhale, our lungs expand, made possible when the diaphragm squeezes (a dome-shaped muscle right below the lungs). Fluid build up in the lungs causes pleurisy. The oxygen in the air is absorbed into the blood. Smoking is the most common cause of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). This may cause emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, cancer, and a bunch more problems, to many to mention. So what can we do to help our lungs to be healthy? Stop smoking, use filter masks with dust related jobs, in- home filter units, get your wife a maid to clean😃, exercise, and get help from your doctor. What does the Bible say about the lungs? Answer - nothing, but there are references about breathing.

GENESIS 2;7 -- The LORD formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.GENESIS 7:15 -- Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the Ark.I KINGS 17:17 -- (about Elijah) Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, he became worse and finally stopped breathing. Elijah prayed “Oh LORD let this boy live”. God heard his prayer and the boy’s life returned to him.JOB 12:10 -- (of God) In His hand is the life of every creature, and the breath of all mankind.JOB 33:4 -- The spirit of God has made me; the breath of the almighty gives me life.PALMS 33:6 -- By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth.PALMS 150:6 -- Let everything that has breath, praise the LORD. PRAISE THE LORD.ISAIAH 42:5 -- This is what the LORD says: He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to it’s people, and life to those who walk on it.EZEKIEL 37:5 -- This is what the sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and

Thanksgiving at the HallBy Ashley McNamaraThe CCCIA pulled off another big Thanksgiving dinner, and once again I need to offer my sincerest thanks to everyone who helped so much to make it all happen. So many people contributed in big and small ways that I hardly know where to start. If you came and helped out in any way, whether you told me your name (which I may not be able to spell correctly as I am writing this!), or just did something anonymously, I want you to know that your thoughtfulness was much appreciated. I apologize if I fail to mention you in person in this article- you know who you are! Suzy Schemel was the first person to help, shopping for necessities like Sterno and paper plates, and she as well as Nancy Gerecht and Bruce Goodwin came to the Hall and assisted with set-up the night before, which helped to take a lot of the stress off me for the next day. Dean Johnnen and Gene Shaddock actually beat me to the Hall on Thanksgiving morning and were ready to roll as soon as they got in the door. Dean did a lovely job arranging the veggie platters while Gene made coffee, got the drink table set up, and bravely attempted to light the oven. Jay and Shelly Peters-Schaller, Nancy G., Kate Tallman and John Baich appeared bringing food early on, and Jay and Shelly also managed to find and donate clamshell take-home boxes- yay! John B. also brought a turkey, and before long Doc Long and his sweet wife Doris arrived and got busy carving it up for us. Chris and Mike from Canyon Liquors really boosted our spirits when they showed up with food donations plus wine

for the kitchen help- those two are awesome! Mokshana and Aaron Bucher-Zauber and their kids brought an enormous fourth turkey and plenty of wonderful side dishes. Once a lot of people began arriving, things became a bit chaotic, and a lot of people brought food items without letting me know who they were or exactly what they had to offer, but I do know that the table was loaded down with plenty of delicious eats. A few of the names I managed to gather were Jerry and Barb Smethills and their kids and in-laws, Jane and Mike Marsolek, Jan Waddington, Tom and Elizabeth Harp, Georgia and Ron Schaffer, Chuck and Vicki and their daughter Brandi Jo McCarty (who until recently was just called Brandi), and Jen and Wendy (sorry, I missed both of your last names). Kate T., Dawn Williams, Brandy Lee and Erik Johnson all brought edibles for the gluten-free crowd. Kate helped me in the kitchen and didn’t laugh too hard at my ridiculous first attempt to make gluten-free gravy. John never stopped doing something as long as there were more people showing up to eat. The most challenging part of Thanksgiving for me is always the clean-up phase, since by then my energy is at a low ebb, but fortunately plenty of hands made for light work this year. Gene and Dean stayed around to make extra coffee

and wash the first round of dishes, until John B. took over, determined to have the worst case of dishpan hands in the Canyon. Chuck, Vicki and Brandi Jo, Connie Santiago, Chris DePetro and Joelle Dunaetz, Mike and Jane, Jen and Wendy, among others, all stayed late to put away tables and chairs, sweep floors, wipe counters and divide up food leftovers. My favorite brother Andrew arrived at the last minute and sprang into action. Better late than never! Lastly, I need to thank Suzy Schemel again for cleaning the Hall afterwards. She didn’t even complain about my gravy mess. This whole event just couldn’t happen without financial support from so many. First, I really need to mention United Power, our corporate sponsor for this and many other events that the CCCIA hosts year-round. United Power rocks! Jan W. also gave us a generous financial contribution, and our donation jar had several tens and twenties in it by the end of the afternoon. I really want to thank everyone who gave cash, no matter if it was 3 figures or a spare buck. You gave what you could afford, and helped ensure that we can do it again next year. We have seen through the years that many Canyon residents count on this meal, and the CCCIA needs to ensure that our Thanksgiving tradition continues. Lastly, I need to thank my own two kids and my sweetie pie, who somehow seem to get roped into a lot of work whenever I volunteer myself for something like this. Your uncomplaining support and willingness to help through everything means the world to me.

Coal Creek Canyon K-8 ContributionWhat a wonderful community we live in, that shows its love and compassion by generously giving to those needing a little assistance. Of the many, many folks who contributed to the Canyon Cares Holiday Food Drive, our own Coal Creek Canyon K-8 shown bright, as they do year after year. A lively contest between the school grades netted many boxes of donated canned and dry goods to include in the 55+ baskets that were distributed. children, assisted in the assembly of the baskets. Fueled by a generous donation of pizza and lemonade, it was a whirlwind of activity in the old sanctuary at Whispering Pines! The importance of the involvement of our children can not be stressed enough as it inspires a new generation of kind and giving adults to come! For the adults, setting the example of giving and caring is crucial. A shout out goes to the 3rd grade at CCC K-8 who won the competition and to all the kids who provided a loving touch with homemade cards that were included in the baskets. Additional help with the Canyon Cares Holiday Food Drive came from the following: Whispering Pines Church, Chapel in The Hills, Spirit of the Mountain Lutheran Church, Coal Creek Catholic Church, Calvary Chapel (in Nederland), B & F Mountain Market, Carl’s Corner, Coal Creek Coffee, Kwik Mart and United Power.Check out Canyon Cares and all that they do at www.canyoncares.org. In order to continue to be able to assist folks who may need a hand through a difficult time, money donations are very much appreciated. However, do keep in mind that if you are unable to help financially, there are always many ways to help in our community, whether it be by giving of your time, support of someone in need or just your love. Be Kind!

The winner of the Canyon Cares Canned Food drive this year was Mrs. Baber’s Third Grade Class! The K-8 students brought in 18 boxes of canned goods this year to be distributed to families in need in the canyon.

The Future of Coal Creek Canyon Watershed PartnershipBy Jackie Daoust, CCCWP Watershed Program AssistantCCCWP has two more major stream restoration projects in process, but there is also much more work to be done to continue the flood recovery and improved resiliency work throughout our canyon. We are hosting two community planning meetings for all Coal Creek Canyon residents to provide input on CCCWP’s future presence in the canyon. We will give an update on where we stand with the Upper Coal Creek Watershed Restoration Master Plan and how much of the restoration work has been completed. We hope to receive feedback from all Coal Creek Canyon residents regarding the future direction and work of CCCWP. Should we focus on more flood resilience projects? Should we continue to provide community services

like water quality testing? Are there other watershed resilience projects we should tackle? If you appreciate the work we have completed thus far to make this canyon safer and more resilient, come lend your voice to this discussion!

The Future of CCCWP & Watershed Master Plan Update

Tuesday, January 16th, 2018 @ 7PM&

Saturday, January 20th, 2018 @ 1PMBOTH in the CCCIA Hall

CCCWP’s current sources of funding for projects and the staff to implement them end in June 2018. We hope our canyon neighbors appreciate the flood and creek improvements that we brought to CCC and are willing to support that work for at least the next two years. The board of the CCCWP will need to raise roughly $100,000 over the next 6 to 8 months from both grant sources and the community to meet our goal. Here is your opportunity to contribute to the safety and beauty of our canyon. Donations can be made:· Online @ www.cccwp.org through PayPal· Check Mailed to: CCCWP PO Box 7093 Golden, CO 80403

Resolution VS. Evolution – The Art of Creating Lasting ChangeIt will likely come as no surprise that 80% of New Year’s resolutions will fail by February. We’ve all experienced new year excitement and the strong desire to change. We get off to a great start only to find our old patterns reemerge to plop us right back where we started. The crux of the problem is trying to make adjustments to our life with our conscious mind which is up against an internal processor that is one million times stronger, the subconscious mind, whose sole purpose is survive at all costs. Change, even beneficial change, is seen by the subconscious mind as a literal threat to our survival! The subconscious mind is like a thermostat set to 70 degrees. When we open up all the windows in the house of our subconscious mind the cold air of change comes rushing in automatically kicking on its thermostat until the heat reaches the baseline setting 70 degrees, literally sabotaging your efforts to change. Let’s look at an example. Weight loss is a common New Year’s resolution. We start an exercise program, alter our nutrition and begin to lose some weight. Our conscious mind gets excited and our subconscious mind detects a threat. Within a very short period of time the willpower of our weaker conscious mind fades as the much more formidable subconscious mind kicks into treat response action. Suddenly we are eating all the bad foods again, finding excuses to not exercise and another resolution bites the dust. The only way to truly break this cycle is to discover and delete the old programs from the subconscious mind and install new ones. To do this there are a couple of things to consider. First, seeking professional help from someone who works in this field is typically the fastest way to get to the root of the issue and

make lasting change. However, there are some things you can do yourself to reprogram the subconscious mind.

10-Minute Meditation.• Visualizing the perfect weight you would like to achieve in your mind’s eye, making the image as real as you can with as much positive emotion as you can muster, is very powerful. The best time is immediately upon waking and last thing before drifting off to sleep as the brainwave state at those times are the most effective to reprogram the subconscious mind. Technology applications.• There are variety of new technologies that use visual and auditory modalities to reprogram the subconscious. You can find these with a bit of research. Space is too limited here to provide a detailed list so if you want some recommendations reach out and I’ll point you in the right direction. Setting Positive Expectations• . Looking for the positive things each day and acknowledging them with gratitude and emotion releases dopamine, a positive feeling neurotransmitter. When we take a moment to find the positive outcomes for whatever we are doing we begin to expand the subconscious mind to seek this experience in all aspects of our life. Positive change is therefore no longer seen as a threat. Trying New Things.• Stretching our comfort zone is what engages our subconscious mind to react. Doing so on a regular basis and getting comfortable with doing things that are not familiar to you will expand the boundaries of the subconscious mind’s thermostat setting. Change becomes ‘normal’ and will massively increase your resolution successes. Since wingsuit flying may be a bit too much just know even small things count. Actions like vacuuming with your non-dominant hand or driving a different route to work will start this process.

Auto-Inquisition.• Asking the mind empowering questions right before falling asleep will immediately put the subconscious mind to work because problem solving is what it does best. Supportive questions like; “How amazing will I feel at 125 pounds?” “What do I need to do to reach 125 pounds?”, will trigger this powerful processer into action to answer these questions and remove the threat when you put your weight loss resolution into action.

Lasting change is possible. The new year indeed brings new change desire and with just a bit of study, practice and application of these techniques you can realize your change desires. Many blessings to you all for a beautiful and amazing 2018!

Additionally, your help is needed to fundraise for a supplemental reading program that is vital for students struggling with reading, early in their education. The PTSA has already put in place a “Leveled Literacy Intervention” program for K – 2 grades, however, the next level of this program for the students of the higher grades is needed. Your donations would help achieve this monumental goal. Many special events are sponsored by the CCC PTSA K-8, such as Rachel’s Challenge that was brought to the school to help promote kindness amongst the students and staff and lessen bullying.Programs that the CCC K-8 PTSA sponsors such as Eagle Eyes, helps promote men making a positive influence within the school. Speaking of Eagle Eyes, we invite all Dads to join their children at school on Men Make a Difference Day, January 10th. Bring your kids to school early and have breakfast in the library at 8:15am. When school starts, you can work on a project together and spend time in your child’s classroom. Here’s To Your Health…

Can you believe it’s 2018? It moves so quickly! Do you feel accomplished for 2017? It’s common for people to set resolutions, but soon they’ve forgotten the gym, disregarded diet, and have yet begun art. We all have dreams. We all visualize our lives somehow different. It seems we also feel a calling to elevate to some place new, be it a job, relationship, body or activity. Yet, another year goes by.WHY THIS TRAP?I could give a LOT of reasons, people and circumstances to blame, but the truth is everything is energy. Everything has a specific vibration and what we attract is exactly that which is in alignment with our “frequency”. Let me explain…Thoughts are energy with a particular frequency, and every thought is either taking you towards wellness, or away from it. Take a moment to think about that. What are you thinking right now? Maybe you think this is a bit far fetched, and maybe it is. However, what if it’s not? When thinking it is, might you be leaving yourself out of possibility of change? Take a deep breath, feel into your body. Notice your posture, how you feel inside, how your breath moves. Now think about something you don’t feel good about. Maybe a childhood memory, divorce, or even a death. Notice what’s changed… How does your body feel? Your posture? Your breath? You can see how thoughts shift your body’s functions. You can turn this around ~ think of something you love! How different do you feel? Every thought changes the way your body functions. Get This: 99% of bodily functions are controlled by your subconscious. That means you’re on autopilot, pretty much always. And, I’m certain there are thoughts “behind the scenes” running part of the show. Thoughts about “not being good enough, strong enough, worthy, etc.” If you’ve ever been teased, shown up, or put down, you likely have negative subconscious beliefs that underly your experience. So, considering fruitless resolutions, you understand. New year’s Re SolutionsWHAT TO DO?1. Watch Your Thoughts. Challenging! Begin by evaluating outcomes, and consider how you created them. For example, let’s say you feel “socially isolated” or “left out”. Continued on page 22

2. Get Real. Think about beliefs that relate to those feelings: For example, “I believe I am alone/not loved” Then say “Ok, I see I hold that belief, and there’s the possibility that it’s creating more of what I don’t want. I accept that I have it, and I accept I can change it.”3.What Would You Rather? “I would rather feel I’m loved and part of the community.”4. Take Notice. Make a point to notice how you actually are loved and part of the community. And, if you really are isolated, then…5. Take Action! Determine your next steps! You may recognize more underlying negative thoughts preventing you from taking that action step. Pay Attention! It’s easy to make excuses, blame, and never get yourself out. Decide that you’re wiling to come to acceptance, determine where you would rather be, and do something different. “Being Free Is Up to Me!”

If you’re stuck, I’m happy to help. Part of the work I do with my patients is a non-force technique that helps break patterns held in the nervous system. What’s really interesting is specific illnesses have specific underlying beliefs that appear to be a large part of the patient having the problem to begin with. Imagine if you could just let go of your negative thinking and truly be in the flow of the Goodness of Life; to experience wellbeing on all levels, and tap the deeper knowing of your own power. THAT would be a life worth living. You can join us at our next FREE talk and learn how to

not going to raise our prices! What?! Woohoo! However, this only works if you continue to support us. We really don’t want to raise the prices! And we know that our daily drinkers don’t want us to raise the prices either, but with costs continuing to go up, we need support. Keep us in mind if you need goodies for your office or class! Or catering! We love cooking and baking and it’s better for all involved if the goodies don’t stay with us!There are catalogs for several local home based businesses available at the shop...please feel free to grab one. We also have gift options available from several of our local artisans. So...support your neighbors!Just a few reminders -- * 1st Thursday night of each month is Book Club at 6:30 * 1st and 3rd Monday nights of each month -- Quilting -- 6-8pm * Fresh baked breads and muffins daily * Breakfast Burritos and Breakfast Sandwiches served all day * Lunch served daily * Take and Bake Meals available with advance ordering * We can cater your party or special event * Free Wi-Fi * Open Monday-Friday 5:30am-3pm * Open Saturday and Sunday 7am-3pm

Thanks for making us a part of your day! See you in the morning -- we’ll have the coffee ready!

What’s Brewing at Coal Creek Coffee...We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and are ready for a fresh start and a new year! Have you made your resolutions yet?! Are they to support small businesses? Good news! The ROMEOs bought us a new OPEN sign, so you can come in once again! Have no fear -- we are open 7 days a week for your caffeine needs! For those of you that haven’t stopped by yet, what are you waiting for?! Just kidding! We are all about comfort foods made from scratch. Whether it’s our blueberry muffins or our green chile, we make it homemade with love. (Just like grandma used to make...Unless your grandma didn’t cook...) We have an awesome Take-And-Bake Menu. We’re mixing it up a bit, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for more info! We’re also bringing back our hot lunches To-Go! And we have soup and sammies on our menu, so stop on by! We have new staff, again, so stop in and introduce yourself. In December we celebrated our 9th year owning the coffee shop. That’s amazing!!! We are so grateful for our regulars, but would like to remind you that local businesses need your business. We all talk about needing more opportunities to do things locally, but that only works if you actually support those local businesses. So we’d like to challenge you, as you start out this new year -- If you stop in once a month, stop in twice. If you’ve never stopped in, give us a try. We are going to do something a little differently this year, and we’re

SURVIVORS IN CHAOS All the other men

MB ReithThis has been a revelation of sorts, the downfall of the “sexual predators”, in particular, the men in power over others. I am sorry to say but many of us women have known of this our whole lives. It is one of the facts of our lives. Baby boomers helped get more women less dependent on the sexual favor exchanges which are again, nothing new. I, personally, have never been involved in more than what I would call flirting over the years. NOTHING like harassment. Some think even “flirting” can be crossing the line. I think one has to think of it all in perspective. But it is kinda nice to see it coming to the forefront of news and being thought about, in many ways. For the many women (#me, too) at long last it is out there and the world is affirming that it is not and has never been the right thing to do.I wanted to mention in THIS column about “all the other men”. Being almost 70 years old? 68 imminently. I have been doing a survey on men and women and sex for at least 50 years. My own survey. I have known many people over my years as I am friendly, in sales for a very long time and observant. I do want to say that the “predators” and the men who are being brought to task over their domineering power attitudes towards many woman? Are only part of the men we deal with every day. I would say that at least 50% of the men I have known, and probably more like 75% of the men I have known are NOT LIKE THAT. Many of them are actually quite shy. Many of them are kind and caring human beings, who do indeed love, honor and respect women. And children, and other men, and all animals…. ALL MEN ARE NOT DOGS. I am sure we all know that. Those of us watching the news. I just don’t hear that

point of view. I feel like it needs to be said out loud, just like the ladies coming forward now are saying things out loud. Yes we are all being rather dumbstruck by the magnitude of this current news. There is so much to pay attention to. There is so much to consider and turn over in one’s brain. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that many men we know are just not that way. I realize there is a group of people, probably including men, that DO think that is all MEN want to do. An addiction if you will. We are told, in rape and other sexual harassment/attacks, it is about power. NOT about SEX. Abuse of any kind of anyone is not acceptable. It is not healthy for our small planet. Beings have fought abuse since the beginnings of written down time. Happenings this year? ARE bringing people together. Bringing strength of survival by the sheer numbers .We can only hope that some of the surveys coming out suggest the younger generation of people have less interest in harassing, or abusing ANYONE. Realistically you cannot rid the earth of abuse of power. That would be the UTOPIA (those of you who know me in reality or from this column) I want to live in. I am reminded by the people who I call my Devil’s Advocates, that my wish for world peace, is just that: a wish. However, I feel like we all can add to the peace in the world, even if slowly, by our actions. By our acceptance of those who do not think as we do. By learning to love first yourself! And all others. I always fall back on the good ole Moody Blues (hooray, what a group going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018!!) song (mentioned before sorry I am repetitious which again, you know!!) “Love is the opening door, love is what we are all here for” Probably a paraphrase, but you get the picture.

As we enter 2018, after this tumultuous 2017, hopefully we all can figure out a way to keep peace and love at the top of our list. We can stand up for the right actions and point out the wrong actions. Remember: those “complicit” are being called upon also. Those that knew/know of harassing behavior and don’t try to intervene. For the right of it all. Not OK to look the other way. Do something. Meanwhile, back to moving forward with a positive attitude. Putting out the positive vibes. Actions that actually support peace and love. Understand that sometimes we have to forgive and move forward and hope EVERYONE learns from 2017 events. Back to all the other men. “All, Forever, Never” do not exist. Life is a mish mash of different people, animals & things. Figure out how to make it work for you & all you know! Love, peace, Happy New year. Bring it on! Call Aquarian RE if you want a calendar.

EARTHWATCH Fuel Efficiency by Jody DicksonWe love our cars and trucks, and where we live we deeply depend on them! However, we know that driving all of our individual vehicles has a significant impact on the environment. Both the production of gasoline as well as the use of it is a significant source of pollution that is part of the cause of climate change. Also, oil is a non-renewable resource, and we know we will not be able to sustain our current levels of use. Fortunately, we can make some simple changes to increase our fuel efficiency which reduces our fuel consumption. As a side benefit, it’ll save us a few dollars at the gas pump, too! Here are a few practical and easy tips to help you improve your fuel efficiency.

When Driving:- Use the right vehicle for the job. Only drive the truck or SUV when their space and capacity are needed. Also, avoid heavy loads. Remove sand bags from the trunk in the summer and pack lightly for long trips. - Plan your travel when traffic is lightest and plan your route with the fewest stoplights and lower speed limits- I think we do this naturally due to the time it takes to run errands from the canyon, but be sure combine trips. This will cut the distance traveled and the fuel usage in half.- Don’t let your car idle for a long time to warm it up. The most effective way to warm up your car is to drive! (Engines also produce more pollution and wear faster when they’re cold.) After it is warmed up don’t let it idle for more than a minute. Idling wastes more gas than restarting your car. (Yes, restarting your car often will wear down other components, so be thoughtful about when it makes sense to turn on/off your car!)- Try not to accelerate or brake hard. Slow and steady acceleration and braking may increase fuel economy by 20%. As a side benefit, this requires staying more alert to what is happening around you while driving which will increase your safety, too!- Run your air conditioner as little as possible as it uses a lot of gas. Of note, defrost on most vehicles also uses the AC. - Reduce your speed. As your speed increases, your aerodynamic drag increases exponentially causing the use of significantly more fuel. Once you are going over 30 MPH, a car uses more energy to overcome wind resistance than it does fighting rolling resistance. - When on the open road, use cruise control because staying at a constant speed will save fuel.

- Open windows increase drag and decrease fuel economy by up to 10%. Don’t carry things on top of the vehicles when you don’t have to for the same reason. Even an empty rack creates enough drag to reduce mileage by 5 MPGs.Maintenance:- Keeping a mileage log will indicate when our fuel efficiency is slipping and it is time for a tune-up. Badly worn spark plugs can cost you as much as 2 MPG. Dirty oil cuts back on engine efficiency, so be sure to change your oil according to the recommendations. On older cars, keep your air filter clean or your car will be utilizing more gas and less air. (More modern cars manage this ratio through the computer.)- Check your tire’s air pressure. Under inflation of your tires can cost as much as 1 MPG. If you up the pressure to the maximum listed on the sidewall, the ride will be a bit rougher, but your rolling resistance will be reduced. It is recommended that you check your tire pressure at least once a month to quickly identify if you are leaking air and losing MPGs. Last but not least:- Consider fuel economy when purchasing a new vehicle. Opt for a smaller, more lightweight car. A reduction of 200 pounds in weight results in nearly 5% more fuel economy. A manual transmission results in better fuel economy as well. - Utilize alternative forms of transportation including mass transit, bike paths and carpools. Of course, these options save wear & tear on your vehicle as well!

We are listening:Joel Salatin is a farmer who purposefully works to mimic nature’s best practices in his farming practices on his family farm in Virginia. He has been featured in the book Omnivore’s Dilemma and written his own books on the topic, too. More recently, Mr. Salatin was interviewed on the podcast, Sustainable World Radio. In this episode he tells the story about the condition of the land when his family started farming on it, and what they did to make it a fully functioning piece of land again. I especially liked Mr. Salatin’s call to action towards the end of his interview in this episode. *~*~* Coal Creek Canyon Sky Watchers! *~*~*By John Williams & Barbara David

Credit: John WilliamsThe next Sky Watchers meeting is: Saturday, January 20th – From 7 to 9:30 PMAt the Coal Creek Canyon Community Hall, 31528 Highway 72, Golden, CO 80403 Join us on January 20th for a special meeting where we will have presentations on the major 2017 international space missions and what space activities are planned for 2018; the amazing astronomical events of 2017 and what to watch for in 2018; and some great astrophotography images. After the presentations, we’ll set up our telescopes and check out some celestial objects, weather permitting.2017 ASTRONOMICAL & SPACE EVENTS! By John WilliamsTo give you a glimpse of a few of the 2017 space and astronomy events that will be covered at our next meeting – read on!2017 was a busy year in space with 84 total rocket launches from planet Earth; and only 6 failures. Astronomy news also

made some spectacular headlines with the Great American Eclipse in August, Cassini’s plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere and an interstellar visitor dominating the news. This is a recap of the top 5 space stories of 2017.Total Solar Eclipse - Among the year’s most-hyped space events was the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Not since 1910 has an eclipse crossed the entire continental United States. Starting in Oregon, the path of totality widened to about 70 miles, crossing 14 states before exiting South Carolina. NASA and other science organizations spun excitement around the event making it the most watched eclipses in human history. Start making plans now for the 2024 total solar eclipse that takes place over the US again.Cassini’s Plunge - September 15, 2017 marked the last day of a spectacular mission called Cassini. Cassini was the fourth probe to study Saturn when it entered orbit in 2004. For the next 13 years, Cassini helped determine the structure of Saturn’s rings and mapped the surfaces of the planet’s myriad moons. But its most memorable findings were liquid methane oceans on Titan and water geysers on Enceladus. Because NASA feared contaminating the possible life-bearing worlds around the ringed giant, the agency decided to send it on a fiery plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere.Waves in Spacetime - In October 2017, scientists caught the colossal collision of two neutron stars in one of the strangest mashups. And it was a dramatic example of how seemingly far-flung our ideas of the universe have become. Astronomers

didn’t actually observe the collision of these two tiny, but incredibly massive bodies. But our instruments felt it. As the neutron stars finally collided, they released waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime. Sensitive detectors on Earth jiggled ever so slightly for the first time ever as the waves passed through our vicinity. Look for more findings like this in the years to come.Possibility of life on Icy Worlds - While ideas for life on the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn are not new, more evidence flooded in during 2017 giving more weight to the possibility. Saturn’s moon Enceladus gave more clues that conditions might be right for life near hot spots deep under the moon’s thick ice crust. Similar hotspots deep within Earth’s oceans provide a home for many exotic deep-sea creatures. These hot vents could provide perfect conditions for organisms out there. Interstellar Visitors - I actually think this is the century’s biggest story. For the first time in October 2017, an interstellar asteroid was spotted moving through our solar system; not bound to the gravity of the Sun. Dubbed Oumuamua, the object is unusual. Cigar-shaped and cold, the 230-meter-(800-foot)-long asteroid is red in color. The surface is probably similar to comets and organic-rich asteroids found throughout our solar system. Other than that, almost nothing is known about this interstellar visitor. Oumuamua, the Hawaiian word for messenger, was probably gravitationally tossed out of its home system millions of years ago after another star drifted by too closely. For now, the interloper is speeding out of the solar system reaching the orbit of Jupiter later in 2018 and leaving completely in just a few years. Because of its unusual, “Rama-like” appearance – referring to the cylindrical alien starship in Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction books – astronomers have been listening for possible radio signals emanating from the object.

JANUARY NIGHT SKIES - During January, four planets grace the dawn skies – Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter and Mars. Saturn emerges from the glare of the Sun low in the southeast, moving higher as the month progresses. Mercury is very low in the southeast. Jupiter and Mars ride near each other and meet up with the crescent Moon before dawn on January 11th. Venus won’t make a showing until March. And if you’re looking for the green and blue orbs of Uranus and Neptune, they lurk in the evening sky. The first Full Moon in January is the 1st – New Year’s Day. There’s a second Full Moon on January 31st – and a Lunar Eclipse! Come to our Sky Watchers meeting on January 20th to find out more. Here are the times for our area:Lunar Eclipse on January 31st! (Mtn time)Partial eclipse begins: 4:48 a.m. Total eclipse begins: 5:52 a.m. Greatest eclipse: 6:30 a.m. Total eclipse ends: 7:08 a.m. The Moon sets before end of partial eclipse. Our local Sky Watcher Joelle Dunaetz sometimes leads Full Moon Hikes when the weather is good as well as other great

Email her for details on her winter nature adventures at – [email protected] DECEMBER 2ND MEETING - For our December 2nd meeting, 33 people showed up to hear a great presentation by David Elmore, Instrument Scientist from the National Solar Observatory in Boulder. David brought us the latest information they have gathered from the Citizen Science Total Solar Eclipse project entitled the Continental America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) Experiment. This project deployed 68 identical telescopes along the August 21st total solar eclipse path from coast to coast to measure the Sun’s corona. Many high school and university students and astronomy groups participated in this project too. We also had brief updates on international space exploration missions by Leonard David and the latest greatest astronomy news by John Williams. A special feature at our December meeting was a holiday gift corner with astronomy and space-related gifts to purchase that were created by some of our members including astronomy books, space music, Hubble Star Cards, space artwork, prints and greeting cards. Some of these items are also available at the WonderVu Café’s Gift Shop and our CCC Coffee Shop. Local artisan Dede Downing was so wonderful to create a dozen of her signature hot pads with stars and planets and contributed them to Sky Watchers as a fundraiser. Thank you, Dede!Thank you, Sky Watchers, for all the canned and packaged food you all brought to our December meeting for our local Canyon Cares to include in their holiday gift baskets for those in need in our community. Our Sky Watchers website is at – http://www.sky-watchers.co – where you can download and print John Williams’ CCC Sky Map for January. Bundle Up for Winter StormsAre you ready for winter’s cold grasp? We may not have seen much winter yet, but snow and ice are inevitable when dealing with winter storms, but being prepared can make a world of difference. United Power recommends the following tips to help you prepare for wintery blasts.

Winterize Your HomeWinter storms wreak havoc on your home. By winterizing your living space, you’ll be prepared for extreme cold and hazardous conditions.

• Remember to maintain and inspect heating equipment and chimneys every year to ensure they’re working safely and properly.

• Caulk and weather strip doors and windows to make the most of your heating system.

• Freezing temperatures often cause water pipes to burst. Remember to insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic. Allow faucets to drip during extreme cold to avoid frozen pipes.

• Consider installing storm windows for better insulation, or cover windows with plastic (from the inside) to keep the cold out.

Prepare a Winter Survival KitSevere winter storms often bring heavy accumulation of ice and snow, which can lead to downed power lines and extended outages. United Power crews will work hard to restore power, but having a winter survival kit on hand is a smart idea.

• Food: Store food that does not require cooking, such as canned goods, crackers, dehydrated meats and dried fruit. Keep a large supply of water on hand. Ready.gov recommends five gallons per person.

• Medication: Be sure to refill all prescriptions in the event of a major power outage.

• Identification: Keep all forms of identification handy, such as driver’s licenses, photo IDs and social security cards. Bank account information and insurance policies are also good to have on hand.

• Other items: First Aid Kit, blankets, warm clothing for every family member, flashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries.
