Presidential Diary

My last contribution as your President – it hardly seems yesterday when I wrote my first diary report, but here we are – 24 months later! Thank you for all your support through my tenure of office and I would like to emphasise what an honour and a privilege it has been to represent such a thriving sports

association.

The Annual Dinner on 15 March at The Phoenix Artists Club was attended by 50 members, many with their partners and we were well entertained between courses by the excellent singing of The Haywood

Sisters.

Peter Stokes strived to keep things in order as Toastmaster and I gave a short speech on the history of dinner venues and traditions to be adhered to as the evening progressed. There was a three verse rendition of “The Duties of a Presidential Year” to the tune of Flanders & Swann’s “The Gas Man Cometh” culminating in a toast to “The School”. The response from Mr Alex Williamson was a report on the successes of the school and

future aims.

The evening continued with The Haywood Sisters singing a final ‘set’ with members dancing and singing along. I later learnt that one of the traditions I had mentioned earlier in the evening – that of arriving back at Poplar Road in time for breakfast – had been strictly adhered to by

several of the company present!

A thoroughly enjoyable evening and I would like to thank The Phoenix for their fine food, good service and

great entertainment.

We were notified that Derek ‘Tubby’ Evans and Roger ‘Slim’ Hearn passed

away this month.

Derek was one of our overseas members but contributed much to the life of the club before he went

to Australia – both as a rugby player and cricketer. His name can often be read in the club publications of that time as well as his photo in the

school 1st XV & XI.

Roger was also a rugby and keen cricketer both scoring for the O.R.s 1st XV as a schoolboy and later

playing for the team.

to add please e-mail to me – thanks.

will be better than ever. I am always amazed at how easily the organisation takes shape. It must take an incredible amount of work to put on and works through the generosity of members giving their time, expertise and services in order

to make the project a success.

The Annual General Meeting of the Association takes place on Friday 25 April and I urge you to attend. Not only is it the occasion when the new Officers of the Association are elected but it is your chance to let the “powers that be” know exactly what you think about the running of the Association. The Executive can only do what they think fit, they are not mind readers and can get it wrong. It is up to you to tell them

what you want from your club.

Finch & Co. ORA Sponsors Nestled amongst the John Innes designed Merton Park conservation area, Finch & Co enjoys a unique position. ‘Green flag’ awarded spaces, tree lined avenues and beautiful Edwardian houses occupy the surrounding roads. The area feels rural despite its proximity to London. In the late 19

th century, John Innes, of

compost fame, together with his brother James, turned one of London’s original garden suburbs into a semi rural suburb for the City businessmen of the time. Now in the 21

st century, we can fully appreciate

the quality and style of these 1920s and 1930s homes that were not destroyed during the war. The homes designed by Quartermain and Brocklesby remain highly sought after. The Finch office team are enthusiastic, exuberant and excited. They speak with great affection for the area, especially Beryl who has been with the company for 23 years. Her local knowledge is invaluable, thanks to her super memory. With Manager Katharine; Stefan, David and Beryl provide a service to the community which is unique. Sponsorship and links with Old Ruts sports club demonstrate that the ‘village’ spirit is alive and thriving. The area is now home to all combinations of housing stock, from flats and cottages to large detached homes, all carefully designed to complement the locality.

It's NOT too late to join, this vital

scheme is ongoing and can be joined

quarterly. If you've made a verbal pledge

and wish to enter the draw then please

Alternatively speak to Gavin Lennard or

I cannot believe a year has passed since the Annual General Meeting at which I took over from Peter Day as Chairman of the Association. The time has just flown by and we seem to have achieved a great deal, but then again, there is still an awful lot

to do.

The sterling efforts of many people in organising (and cooking!) regular BBQs led to the decision to construct a new designated BBQ area beside, but not connected to, the Smoking Area. This was possible after a most generous bequest from the late Pat Molony. This not only satisfied the demands of the cooks (or should that be chefs!) but also satisfied our Fire Officer-in–residence who pointed out that a build up of cooking fat on the roof of the Smoking Area could easily lead to a situation where a fire could break out. As this structure is attached to the Clubhouse itself, the

consequences were unthinkable.

An additional benefit of the regular BBQs is the effect on the bar turnover, which has risen by over £30,000 in the past year. This is despite the fact that day-to-day use of the bar has decreased to such an extent we now rely heavily on the “outside” lettings and special events organised so the Clubhouse is fully utilised. However, there is no room for complacency and we must continue to run these events to survive and so we can provide the facilities we have all come to

admire.

An example of these events is not only the obvious Rutsfest and its derivatives, but the “simple” Quiz Night organised by Rob Lever and his dream team. Not only was it well-organised but has now such a reputation that entry had to be denied to several people. Perhaps the next one might need to have an overspill in the bar as well as a

packed Hall !

If you have an idea of how we can capitalise on the obvious popularity of these events, put it to one of the Executive or Section Committees and we will endeavour to develop your idea if you do not want to act on the idea yourself. Please don’t hide your

light under a bushel!

Talking of Rutsfest, this is this year’s must attend event. Judging by the e-mails emerging from the organisers it

Free food and drink—what’s the catch?

The Executive Committee has decided we

will hold a “Day of Action” in June when,

in return for a free drink or two and a

free BBQ we will try and get those jobs

done in one fell swoop that we have been

putting off for so long.

Together with a good clean and tidy up,

making a few simple repairs and getting

rid of the junk we have accumulated

over the years we can achieve more in a

single morning than our hard working

Groundsman can achieve in a month.

Further details will follow in due course

but I hope you will and be able to

support this event.

Following John Brown’s obituary last

month, Andrew Huxtable (1949-56) sent

He achieved his best marks as a student

Old Boy stands up!

Popular ExA Captain and Stateside Stand Up, Alan Hawkins, will be back in the UK at the end of May. He is planning to have a lunchtime drink

at the Club on 25 May (RUTSFEST).

He has also offered to participate in a comedy night, for adults only. As an appetiser for what could be a rich repast, Alan provided a link to his latest performance at McCurdy's Comedy Club in Sarasota Florida > https://vimeo.com/88096277. If you want more of this, let the Exec

know (as urged by our Chairman).

Cavalier boating jacket

Many of us have regarded the President’s sartorial savoir faire with a degree of envy each time he

appears in his Club blazer.

In an effort to promote wider carrying of club colours, John Morgans has suggested Brook Taverner’s Cavalier boating jacket as

an alternative to the club blazer.

At £97.50 (which might include an introductory discount as the website shows it at twice that) it may be an option for members who wish to

sport the Association's colours.

Alternatively, Hon Sec, Mike Stallard is often on the look out for a manufacturer who would make blazers in club colours. Again, if you’re interested in, let the Exec

know (as urged by our Chairman).

Best Foot Forward

MonCC’s Measure

The Monday Curry Club does Chic.

Wandsworth Town has been transformed over the last few years into a fashionable refuge for young professionals boasting numerous boutiques, art galleries, cafes and delicatessens. It’s become something of a suburban village providing a haven nestled within the busy

Wandsworth one-way system.

Wandsworth Town is also home to Amirah’s Kitchen, a restaurant offering “a mix of authentic Indian street food along with tried and true favourites” and “a sophisticated dining experience, giving exceptional cuisine and service in a friendly relaxed environment” with a “fresh

and modern” interior .

Amirah’s Kitchen also has a private dining room where the MonCCs assembled, after a few of Young’s

finest amuse bouches at the Alma.

It may be modern and chic but the lasting memory of our visit to Amirah’s Kitchen won’t be the food (average) or the service (enthusiastic but slow) but the Karaoke machine which burst into life after several MonCCs and a couple of waiters pressed enough buttons to eventually

find the ON switch.

Starting off with an enthusiastic rendition of an Indian banga banga dance track, the assembled group then obliterated numerous pop classics by: Neil Diamond, Queen, Coldplay, Bon Jovi, the Beatles and

Abba amongst others.

The starters may have been cold and the main course a little on the sloppy side, but any culinary misgivings were soon forgotten in the

cacophony of song.

Over many months, the MonC Club has experienced various Jalfrezis, Dansaks, Rogan Joshs, Kormas, Tikka Masalas, Biryanis and Baltis but this was the first time we had ever had the chance to try a Mixed Meat

Karoake. What a treat!

And in conclusion? Trendy and chic doesn’t always equate to good food, but after a few beers and a good

singalong, who cares!

Reunions RUTSFEST 25 May 2014

Rutlish School U14 v Howard of Effingham School Surrey Cup Final. A great performance not only to reach a Surrey Cup Final but to lose so narrowly to a

team undefeated for two seasons!!

Graveney (aka O.R.U15 XV) v Altrincham G.S. Daily Mail Vase Final at Twickenham. A great day despite the

10-12 loss in a hard fought contest.

O.R.R.F.C. 1st XV Rugby v Chipstead. What a turnaround! From 0—22 down against the league’s second team, we

produced a 2nd half display to win 25-22.

Will they survive the drop? Their last match against Law Society is critical to

their survival.

Last Saturday was the Rugby Dinner. Another very enjoyable occasion, well attended by senior and junior coaches, President, players, pundits, physios and partners. Awards were given and toasts taken for all the usual ‘trivial’ reasons.

Thanks again to Pat Keene and her team.

The 1st XI survived their first ever relegation scare by default in 2012/13 . However under the inspired leadership of new manager Bob Bain, they will find a

far more comfortable position this year.

The 2nd and 3rd XI’s will also end their seasons in respectable positions. The 2nd XI also reached the League Cup Semi Final, but fell short of reaching the actual final. The Vets have enjoyed another successful season under the

experienced guidance of Lee Caffell.

The unsuccessful Nursery Road project proved to be the latest obstacle preventing the Football Section from running Junior Teams, as playing space

at Poplar Road remains at a premium.

The electronic cricket scoreboard was officially ‘switched on’ on Friday 11 April by Charles ‘Chas’ Cooper our Senior Cricketer and 5th Team Umpire. Well done to Perry and the rest of the team for the conversion of the old score-box into this fine new modern facility. The rest of the evening was spent in player registration, DBS checking, quaffing and partaking of Pat Keene’s finest culinary

experience.

Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.

Confucious.

Preparations for the season have gone smoothly and the club is excited to embark upon the new campaign, which we hope will be even more successful than the last. The section has been extremely productive during the winter. We are delighted to have finally entered into the modern era by renovating our scorebox and purchasing an electronic system which we hope that all players and spectators will appreciate. The project has been in the pipeline for some years now but, thanks to the hard work of a few committed members, we have finally managed to make it happen. The club is extremely grateful to those that have supported the project. Howman & Co Solicitors, KL Insurance and a club patron have enabled us to purchase the electronic scoreboard. It’s very post-modern… As a section, we are indebted to all our sponsors for their continual support and we urge all those reading this to take a minute to have a look at the company logos dotted around this Orbit and try to use their services

wherever possible.

We are also pleased to have Evolutions as our shirt-sponsors for the 2014-2016 seasons. New club kit is available to buy on our website, so please have a look at the new training gear. It is available on:

http://oldrutscricket.org.uk/shop.html

The club is also delighted to announce that our overseas for the 2014 season is Perry Colyer from Perth, Western Australia. Perry arrived on Wednesday 9 April and will be with us for the duration of the season and we hope he will contribute to a successful season for the 1st XI. He will also be an integral part of aspects off the field and will be heavily involved in coaching the colts throughout the summer. He is a fully-qualified coach and will play a key role in developing many of our younger members. If your child is interested in having private sessions with Perry, please do approach

him while he is around the club.

Indoor nets have been a great success and we hope we have managed to get our members into some sort of shape, ready for the season. They have been held at Rutlish School for the past 10 weeks and have been well-turned out throughout their duration. What has been most pleasing is the attendance of many of the colts. They have shown an excellent attitude and application at the sessions and we hope training with the senior

players has been beneficial to them.

The senior sides will be extremely busy with pre-season matches over Easter . The season’s first fixture sees the Surrey Trust side embark on the defence of their title away v Oxted and Limpsfield on Sunday 13 April. There will then be home fixtures at the club beginning the weekend of Saturday 19 April, with the 1st XI playing their first fixture on Easter Monday (21) v Beddington. The 1st XI will also compete in the National Cup competition for the first time (ever?) and have a tough first round draw on Sunday 27 April v Reigate Priory CC. We believe entering this competition is a progressive step to test our resources against some of the very best clubs in the country. We’re not, however, entering this just to make up the numbers and sincerely want to achieve some success along the way. The Surrey Championship League campaign begins on Saturday 10 May for all our

teams.

So here’s to a successful season. We hope that many of you come down and support the section throughout the summer and enjoy the displays we put on. The teams

are always grateful for all support.
