With Christmas now being a distant
memory and somewhat of a blur I
can just about recall the Annual
President’s duty of handing out gifts
of beer and wine to the pilgrims who
journeyed to the Club on Christmas
morning; it was nice to see some old
faces.
The yearly Boxing Day match was, as
usual, well attended with the Ruts
putting up a spirited fight against the
Old Wimbledonians.
Although a loss was suffered, this did
not detract from the main purpose of
the day ‘drinking’.
I would like to personally thank those
members who sent Christmas cards
to the Club, especially those
overseas members. It is nice to hear
from you, although please don’t
leave it to the annual Christmas card
to contact us. It would be nice to
hear about what members are
getting up to, so If you would like to
let us know, please forward any
articles to; [email protected]
Our President writes Club AGMs came thick and fast
during January. Firstly the cricket
section, which I was unable to
attend. I would like to congratulate
Sonny Cooper on his appointment as
club captain.
Next was the Golf section AGM, a
rather genteel affair over a glass or
two, nothing controversial to report.
Thanks go to Derek Keen for his
captaincy over the last year, and
good luck to John Cunliffe on taking
up the challenging position of
Captain !!!
With my year rapidly coming to an
end, may I please remind members
of the Annual Dinner.
If not already booked, please contact
either Fathia Keene or Peter Day who
will be more than happy to relieve
you of your hard earned cash.
For those interested I believe that
the club still has a couple of blazers
left, any takers please contact Geoff
Aldis.
Darrell Semikin,
President

Our Chairman writes
I recently saw an advertisement
which struck a chord with me as it
suits our own set up. With apologies
to the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution, it ran:
“We do not pay our VOLUNTEERS,
Not because they are WORTHLESS,,
But because they are PRICELESS!”.
We are approaching the time of year
when we hold our Annual General
Meeting and it could be a time of
change. If you have a hankering to
get your ideas across on how we run
the Association, now is the time to
put yourself forward. Whatever rocks
your boat, we have a job for you!
Whatever your talents (and
everybody has some) whether its
administration, finance or you can
simply wield a paint brush, now is
the time to come forward. Just
speak to a Committee Member.
The new hall bar is up and running
thanks to some sterling work by the
Bar Team. It really has transformed
the hall giving an extra dimension to
our lets.
Here and elsewhere you will find
some photographs, by Annalisse
Poulter, showing the advantages. Our
hall is now the go to venue for all
your event and party needs with
advantageous rates to our Members.
Congratulations to Mike Stallard who
project-led the operation from start
to finish. We will soon be seeing the
fruits of the team’s labours.
The Executive has decided the new
bar will be named “The Gilby Bar” in
recognition of the contribution made
to the Association by the late Jim
Gilby who sadly passed away last
year. We hope that Jim’s widow,
Jane, will officially open the new
facility later in the year.

A. W. BILLINGHURST
We regret to announce the death of
Anthony William Billinghurst who
attended Rutlish School from 1935-
1940 where he developed his love of
cricket, rugby and the CCF (then the
OTC).
At the outbreak of war, his father’s
work having been transferred to
Colwyn Bay, he completed his
education in the sixth form of the
local grammar school where he
became an enthusiastic hill walker
which in later life, led to his
becoming leader of many expeditions
to mountainous regions and to the
Arctic.
During the war he spent four years
with the R.A F. in India, and on
returning to England took a degree in
French at King’s College , London
where he represented his college at
cricket. In the early and middle
fifties he regularly travelled between
Cambridge and Merton where he
opened the innings for the Sunday
1st X1 with considerable success as
an opening left-handed batsman.
He spent his whole teaching career
at the Perse School, Cambridge,
became a scout leader, a Wing
Commander in the C.C.F and a
playing member of the M.C.C. In
1990 he was awarded the O.B.E. for
his leadership of youth expeditions
to remote areas.
He died of Alzeimers disease on
December 19th , a few weeks before
his 92nd birthday. He is survived by
his wife, Jeannine and two
daughters.
Charles Cooper.

THE REUNION
We were all so much younger then
Now, as old men we meet again
Looking through spectacles, trying in vain,
To recognise strangers with forgotten
names.
Icons present in our minds
Match not those features of this time
And names that once epitomised our
youth
Now confront us with the truth.
Yet happy memories do unfold,
And long forgotten stories told
As we stand and reminisce
And speak about those we miss
So with the passing of years,
There is laughter now - no more tears
We were, once, all the same you know
But that was forty years ago

At the end of September, Old Rust set off to emulate the heroes of Le Tour’s most recent visit to England by completing
the medium (93 mile)route of Etape London (though Etape TOWIE) might be closer.
Early on a bright Sunday morning, Old Rust and Richly Moustachioed Bloke took the train to Waterloo and rode over to
Lea Valley park to start at the Olympic Velodrome.
We set off through East London to battle through Epping Forest and out into the countryside. We sailed out unaware of
the stiff tailwind all the way to Thaxted, where we turned back south towards Chelmsford. RMB had long gone by this
stage, tagging onto a group of speedy Italians, while OR ploughed his lonely furrow across the undulating Essex fields to
the second feed station which had delicious salty roast potatoes with rosemary. OR tucked in as usual before confronting
the cruel, sapping headwind back to London.
RMB made it back in time to meet Chris Froome. Old Rust made do with a few Alkoholfrei Edingers. Tant pis as I expect
they say in Theydon Bois!
The whole team worked tirelessly with the six players and never gave up. We couldn't pick an MOTM as the whole team deserved it. Josh D was immense at the back, Will was everywhere on the pitch, Josh P was defensively strong and went forward when needed, Big G got another hat trick and never stopped running, Jake was like a terrier in midfield always looking to pass forward, George had a wonder strike and ran himself into the ground up top.
As coach and Dan as manager we couldn't be more pleased with the boys’ progress since the summer. Well played!

Ruts Youth FC Under 10s
Ruts Youth 2 Mitcham Park FC 1
A massive home game as the boys played their biggest game so far in the Surrey Youth League U10s cup.
The game started slowly with both sides sizing each other up. Tommy put himself about well and regularly found Calum W on the right. From one of these breaks, Jamie beat his marker and the keeper, but struck both posts and Mitcham cleared.
Aksel was picking out Oscar who was getting the better of the defence. Rio gave Jamie a break and he was a constant pest to the Mitcham rear-guard. Mitcham though created a chance on the left and Ciaran saved well at his near post. He also tipped one away for a corner as Ruts, although on top, had no cutting edge. Calum R replaced Alf and immediately beat two players but shot wide. George and Calum H were now both chasing back hard and getting forward. The half ended with both sides cancelling each other out.
In the second half, Ruts raised the

2nd XI are second in their table but have played more games than the teams around them.
3rd XI are at the wrong end of the table with just one league win pre-Xmas. However, their form is on the up and they have more points in Jan.
4th XI are second in their table and hope to progress in a League Cup.
Ruts Youth FC Under 8s
Kingstonian FC 2 Ruts Youth FC 7
A tough game away to Kingstonian FC wasn't helped by going with just six players. Ks asked us to play 6 a-side and we agreed. The boys were now all playing a full game.
The opening quarter was very much with Ruts, playing neat football and when it did break down Jake and Big G in midfield regained possession. K's scored against the run of play late in the half from a long range shot into the bottom corner, 1-0 HT.
Within two minutes of the restart Ruts were level. The ball broke in midfield, little George latched onto it and without hesitation lobbed the keeper from well outside the box, 1-1. Time for Big G to do even better, from within his own half his first time shot flew into the goal 2-1!
Ruts turned on the magic again and put three more past K's. Big G tapped home after good work from Will. Will worked tirelessly upfront chasing everything and passing players for fun. He finished off a great passing move involving Jake, Josh and Big G, 4-1. K's couldn't find a way past Josh D at the back. He won tackles, was calm on the ball and looked to pass forward to Will, Josh P and Big G. Pressing was key to Ruts’ game plan and Big G completed his hat trick by winning the ball back and finishing from close range, 5-1.
The final quarter was outstanding, George and Big G worked a good corner routine and George delivered to Josh P at the back post 6-1. Josh P made it 7-1, he never gave up in Ks’ box and passed under the keeper from a rebound. K's got a consolation from a mix up at the back 7-2 FT.

pace. Calum H fizzed over a couple of crosses and Jamie, back on for the hard working Rio, was a thorn in the Mitcham defence’s side. Connor was having a great game in midfield.
Mitcham took the lead. A midfielder went unchallenged for 15 yards to fire into the top corner to go 1 up!
Ruts kept calm. Alf, assured at the back, found Tommy in the middle. He got the ball wide to Oscar who fired over a cross. Jamie’s first effort was blocked, but he managed to scoop the ball into the net to send Ruts’ support into raptures 1-1!!
Connor replaced an exhausted Tommy, and was like a raging bull as he repeatedly broke up Mitcham’s attacks. Calum H returned and from more good play by Connor and Jamie, Calum was in, his first effort saved, but dispatched the rebounded to put Ruts 2-1 up!! Connor nearly broke the crossbar and with a late pile-driver and George should have ended any doubts but he was denied too. Aksel and Alf and the reliable Ciaran saw out a late corner as the whistle went and Ruts were into the semi-finals!!
Calum H has bagged the winner in the last two rounds and Aksel was MOTM for a great all round display.
The support was among the best ever and we appreciate it all immensely.
Ruts from: Ciaran, Alfie, Aksel, Connor, Calum H, Calum R, Calum W, George, Jamie, Oscar, Rio, and Tommy.
