TAMPERE

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland centre in the Nordic countries. The city has over 220,000 and the Tampere region close to half a million inhabitants.

Tampere lies at the heart of Finland’s second most significant economic region. It is the scientific, cultural, commercial and industrial centre of this rapidly growing region in Finland.

Founded in 1779, Tampere is situated on an isthmus between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi, in a beautiful lake and ridge scenery. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city.

Tampere plays an important role in Finnish industrial history: the Finlayson cotton mill was the first largescale industrial enterprise in Finland, and the first electric light in the Nordic countries was lit in Finlayson’s factory hall.

Today Tampere is known as a centre of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business. Tampere University has many faculties and is well known for its Women’s studies. Tampere University of Technology and Tampere University of Applied sciences also attract many students.

TAMPERE HALL CONGRESS AND CONCERT CENTRE

The OB-PS 2015 Event venue, the Congress and Concert Centre, Tampere Hall, is located in a beautiful city park area close to the city centre. Tampere Hall is Scandinavia’s largest Congress and Concert Centre and has been voted the best congress venue in Finland on five separate occasions.

Tampere Hall is close to the railway station and within 5-10 minutes’ walking distance from all event hotels.

THE OLAVE BADEN-POWELL SOCIETY IN FINLAND

The decision to establish the Olave Baden-Powell Society was taken by the WAGGGS World Conference 30 years ago in July 1984 and the first event was held in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1986. There were 90 Founding members, two of them from Finland, Kata Jouhki and Helvi Sipilä. Today the Society has over 1,300 members. The establishment of the Olave Baden-Powell Society has been a success story in many ways. The financial support that the Society has given to the World Association has been of great importance. Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting has become better known around the world and the events have become a forum for people to meet and learn more about worldwide Guiding and Scouting. In Finland there are 28 members, more will join at the coming event.

GUIDING AND SCOUTING IN FINLAND

Guiding and Scout-ing in Finland is based on work by volunteers. We provide non-formal education activities for the personal development of children and young people and our groups are open for all. We try to reach people from different backgrounds and focus on diversity. There are 750 local groups and about 70% of them have a Christian congregation as a background organisation. Local groups run by volunteers offer activities to all of our five age groups.

A typical feature of Finnish Guiding and Scouting is our young leaders: young people are given positions of responsibility from early on - typically leaders of local groups are in their twenties and regional level leaders and national level volunteers in their late twenties. In Finland our aim is that our organisation should truly be a movement for young people by young people. To enable this we need adults who support and mentor young leaders. Outdoor activities are an essential part of Guiding and Scouting in Finland; summer and winter camps, day trips in the forest and sailing are available to all. Our organisation is coeducational and most of the local groups are mixed.

Guiding and Scouting started in Finland in 1910. The Union of Finnish Girl Guides worked in co-operation with the Scout Union of Finland. In 1972 they merged and became one organisation, Suomen Partiolaiset - Finlands Scouter ry (The Guides and Scouts of Finland).

At the moment the Guides and Scouts of Finland have 65,000 members – during the last few years the membership has been growing.
