current forms of sports gambling will go away, but it does mean that public access to new forms of gambling will spread.

To date, OAPCG has processed 1,398 forms requesting self-exclusion from Oklahoma casinos. Each month we process about 30 forms. Self-exclusion is not a fool-proof program to help problem gamblers out of the ca-sino. But, it is an effective and harm reduction technique for many. The OAPCG state-wide self-exclusion form can be found at www.oapcg.org. I hope each problem gambling counselor will continue to encourage cli-ents to sign up for the program.

State-wide self-exclusion is a service of OAPCG and the tribes of Oklahoma that participate are doing so vol-untarily. Thanks to the participating tribes that believe in responsible gaming practices and help our organiza-tion to provide services to the problem gambler and their family members.

Sincerely,

Wiley D. Harwell

Stress Management and the Tax Man

After the holidays many individuals may experience sadness, anxiety, melancholy, anger, as well as concerns about

money and income. All of which are a trigger for self-medication which often involves alcohol, drugs, and of course

gambling.

Looming ahead, in the not too distant future, is “TAX TIME.” For many this is often seen as a financial relief with the

anticipation of a big refund. For the gambler this could spell the added stress of taxes on gambling earnings

throughout the year.

Any money won gambling or wagering is considered taxable income by the IRS. This also includes the fair market

value of any item the gambler may have won, such as a car or trip.

Below are 5 tax tips for reporting gambling income and losses published on the IRS website (www.irs.gov/

newsroom/five-tax-tips-for-gambling-income-and-losses):

• Gambling income. Income from gambling includes winnings from the lottery, horse racing and casinos. It also

includes cash and non-cash prizes. You must report the fair market value of non-cash prizes like cars and trips.

• Payer tax form. If you win, the payer may give you a Form W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings. The payer also

sends a copy of the W-2G to the IRS. The payer must issue the form based on the type of gambling, the amount

you win and other factors. You’ll also get a form W-2G if the payer must withhold income tax from what you win.

• How to report winnings. You normally report your winnings for the year on your tax return as “Other Income.”

You must report all your gambling winnings as income. This is true even if you don’t get a Form W-2G.

• How to deduct losses. You can deduct your gambling losses on Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. The total

you can deduct, however, is limited to the amount of the gambling income you report on your return.

• Keep gambling receipts. Keep records of your wins and losses. This means keeping items such as a gambling

log or diary, receipts, statements, or tickets.

A helpful tip for assisting your clients in handling the anxiety of taxes is to not procrastinate. Encourage your clients

to resist the temptation to delay dealing with their taxes. If your client waits until the last minute they may feel

rushed which increases the risk of making errors. Remember, taxes don’t just go away.

So please encourage your clients to stay on top of their taxes to avoid any additional stress or unnecessary mental

anguish. Have a wonderful and productive year.
