Oklahoma Head StartPrograms
2017 Data, Published 2-18
The local application process is aided by the poverty guidelines. The Department of Health & Human Services issues the guidelines each year. The guidelines are a simple version of the federal poverty threshold. The poverty threshold is updated each year by the Census Bureau.
Poverty Guidelines
Head Start is more than just preschool. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program. Head Start connects children with health, nutrition, and social services that ensure they are ready to learn when they enter the classroom. Children in Head Start develop strong reading, math and social skills that prepare them for elementary school curriculums and assessments. Head Start was created in 1964 to serve 3 & 4 year-old children from families with low-incomes. Early Head Start was created in 1994 to serve the growing needs of children birth-to-3 and pregnant women from families with low-incomes.
What is Head Start?
EligibilityChildren birth-to-five, and pregnant women are eligible to apply. Ninety percent of enrollment must be children living at or below the poverty guidelines. At least ten percent of enrollment must be children with disabilities. Children in foster care, or experiencing homelessness are also eligible to apply.

Health
A Patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is not simply a place. It is a comprehensive primary care delivery model that meets the majority of each patient's mental and physical needs. Comprehensive care requires a team of healthcare professionals including physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers, educators, and care coordinators.
That's why Head Start helps families find preventive care with the Early & Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) schedule. Preventive care keeps children healthy and reduces costs by identifying and treating conditions early. EPSDT is a comprehensive, preventive care guide developed by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.
Children who are eligible for Head Start are more likely to need care
