On behalf of UBM India, I am delighted to welcome you to the 5th edition of OSH South India in Hyderabad. Today, the growing alertness and need for occupational safety at a global level along with the increasing casualties at unsafe workspaces has accentuated the significance of occupational safety & health compliances amongst Indian companies. A lot of transformation has taken place in the global labour force due to globalization and population growth. More than 80% of world’s workers reside in the developing world and these countries share global burden of occupational disease and injuries disproportionately. The situation in India is worrisome with exponential industrial growth coupled with inadequate health care delivery system, lack of sanitation and prevalence of infectious diseases. India contributed 1.9 million cases (17%) out of 11 million occupational disease cases and 0.12 (17%) million deaths out of 0.7 million deaths in the world. The situation is seeing a change for the better with the government’s consistent emphasis on developing infrastructure and providing workplace safety. With the rise in investments in the sector, there lies a huge opportunity for the suppliers and service providers from across the nation and especially in the industrial hub of the South to showcase their product and solution offerings. Dr. Rao is an advisor to many CSR and Non-profit organizations (voluntary organizations). He holds the position of Hon. Chairman & CEO, Matrix Institute of Development Studies, Hyderabad and Hon. Board Member and Mentor of Manasa Institute of Child Health and Disability Studies, Hyderabad. He believes strongly and work intensively in promotion and development of learning and community resource institutions in rural areas aiming at realization of MDGs and now Sustainable Development Goals.Dr.Govinda Rao was a member on the Government of India’s High Power Committee for drafting the Rights of Persons with disability Act 2016. He had supported the committees which drafted Rehabilitation Council of India, 1993 and National Trust for Persons with Mental Retardation, Autism, CP and Multiple Disabilities Act, 1999. He is a visiting faculty of JNTU-H, Dr.BRAOU, NIRD, member on the Editorial Board of Edutracks – A monthly journal on education - and of Journal of Community Guidance & Research (4 monthly journal), Technical Consultant to Parivaar (National Confederation of Parent Associations of Persons with IDD). Dr. Govinda Rao has made practice, teaching and research of rights, inclusion and empowerment of disadvantaged, development management and leadership his life’s work. Author of several well-recognized books, he published many research articles in international and national journals of repute.
