CAKES AND SLICES FOR RALLY Remember that we need lots of cakes, slices, biscuits etc for our rally afternoon tea. Why not start cooking today and pop it in the freezer so we don’t have that last minute rush.

As you may have read in the minutes, our last meeting was interrupted by a blackout, due to the major gas leak down at the RSL club. But we were undeterred. The meeting, and then supper carried on by torchlight!

A trip down memory lane....................

Fond memories of growing up in a very different world.

All the girls had ugly school uniforms

It took five minutes for the TV to warm up

Nearly everyone's Mum was home when the kids got home from school

Nobody owned a pure-bred dog

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny

Your Mother wore nylons that came in two pieces

All male teachers wore ties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels

You got your windscreen cleaned, oil checked and petrol served, without asking, all for free, every time..

Mum cooked every night and nearly every meal was meat and 3 Veg with a Roast on Sunday.

They threatened to keep children back a year if they failed the school year. .. . And they did!

When an FC Holden was everyone's dream car...

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked

Playing cricket with no adults to help the children with the rules of the game

Bottles came from the corner shop without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger

When being sent to the headmaster's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited you at home

Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

As well as summers filled with bike rides, cricket, Hula Hoops, skating and visits to the pool, and bonfire nights with REAL firecrackers.

Taking drugs meant being given half of one of mum's Bex tablets for a headache!!!

QUOTE OF THE DECADE "A socialist paradise would be a place where everybody has guaranteed employment, free comprehensive healthcare, free education, free food, free housing, free clothing, free utilities, and only law enforcement has guns

And believe it or not, such a place does indeed already exist: It's called Prison."

PANTHER De VILLE

The Panther De Ville is a neo-classic luxury vehicle which was produced by Panther Westwinds, the British specialty maker, from 1974 to 1985. The De Ville was conceived by Robert Jankel to appeal to the taste of nouveau riche customers, including singer Elton John and actor Oliver Reed. About 60 De Villes were hand-built, including eleven two-door convertibles (for many years Britain's most expensive listed production car), and one pink and gold six-door limousine.

With a wheelbase of 142 inches (3,600 mm), the tubular-framed De Ville used a straight-six engine or a V12 engine from Jaguar Cars. The flowing wing lines and big headlights of the De Ville were styled to imitate the Bugatti Royale. The cockpit of the De Ville was modern, without the exterior's pretence of pre-war styling. The Panther De Ville was equipped with Jaguar suspension, power steering and automatic transmission, so it was an easy car to drive and quite quick, although poor aerodynamics tended

to keep the top speed low. Interiors were lavish and often featured TV sets and drinks bars. The doors of the De Ville were from the BMC 1800 family car. A Panther De Ville was used in Disney's 1996 live-action movie 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians as Cruella de Vil's car. The Jaguar engine in the car was replaced with a small-block Chevrolet V8. The Panther de Ville for the movie was hand painted by Alexander Mitchell Manufacturer: Panther Westwinds Ltd Production: 1974 - 1985 60 produced Assembly: Weybridge, England Designer: Robert Jankel Body and chassis Body style 4-door saloon

An Irishman goes to the doctor, who after examining him says: “You have some problems with your heart,

but if you take these tablets, I think it will be okay. “So the doctor gives the man the tablets and the patient asks, “Do I have to take them every day?” No,” replies the doctor, “take one on the Monday, skip the Tuesday, take one on the Wednesday, skip the Thursday and go on like that. “Two weeks later the doctor is walking down the street, and he sees the patient’s wife. “Hello Mrs Murphy,” he says, “how’s your husband?” “Oh he died of a heart attack,” says Mrs Murphy. “I’m very sorry to hear that,” says the doctor, “I thought if he took those tablets he would be all right.” “Oh the tablets were fine,” says Mrs Murphy, “It was all the bloody skipping that killed him!”

Two men had just finished laying carpet and decided to have a

cigarette. The packet was nowhere to be found but one of the men spotted a lump in the middle of the carpet. ‘Blast’ he thought’ I’m not going to take up all the carpet just for a packet of fags.’ So, he got a hammer and flattened the lump. Just then the owner of the house came into the room holding the packet of cigarettes. ‘I think these must be yours’ she said. ‘None of us smoke. And by the way, you haven’t seen my pet hampster have you?

MILITARY VEHICLES Do you have an interest in Military vehicles? A procession of about 80 historic military vehicles, considered one of the largest assembled in Australia, filed through the streets of Wangi Wangi (Central Coast, NSW) on ANZAC Day before the Anzac Day service at the local RSL. Wangi Wangi played host to what is thought to be the largest Anzac Day parade of original World War II vehicles anywhere in Australia.

Tracy Vadnjal, of Ryhope, provided 43 vehicles from his extraordinary personal collection, while fellow members of Newcastle Military Vehicle Club took their own vehicles, which boosted the total number on show to 80.

Included in the parade were Jeeps, tanks, amphibious vehicles, Bren gun carriers, motorcycles and a rare AEC Dorchester armoured command vehicle.

A sample of the 43 working vehicles that Tracy Vadnjal took to the Wangi Wangi Anzac Day parade. People travelled from far and wide to view the display that happens every year. Picture: David Stewart

The display has become an Anzac Day tradition in Wangi Wangi, and the pulling power of the vehicles is evident every year. It's estimated that crowds totalling five times the resident population of Wangi Wangi are drawn to the hamlet every year to see the vehicles.

Information found in “Lakes Mail”, community newspaper, April 15, 2019

This could be an interesting trip, or something to remember if you are in the area on ANZAC Day in the future.
