As the end of the second season of being on the executive draws near, I have reflected back on some of the changes over the two years. I think some of the changes have found favour with members both grass roots and high level.

To summarize:

• changes were made in the number of required volunteer hours reducing them to 8 from 12

• we shifted our awards of excellence to allow members to use scores from other EC dressage shows qualify for our different awards

• In an attempt to deliver a fourth show -we offered a bronze shows in the last two summers - two different formats at two different locations - this years one day show at Pine Ridge seemed to be the easiest to produce and did not lose money

• different ideas for fundraising were pursued to keep costs down for our awards banquet

• this year an indoor DW travelling schooling show was offered

• this year we also enabled our June show to be a North American Junior Young Rider Championships qualifier for those young riders to be able to tackle tough qualifications here at home on the Prairies.

• a terrific newsletter was produced in electronic format in colour

• working with Manitoba Horse Council to make changes to the berm at the Birds Hill Equestrian site to reduce effects of polo matches on dressage performances

• still to come this year will be a revision to our bylaws for the AGM in November

• continued recruitment of sponsors and applications for a couple of grants to assist operating costs

• a balanced budget approach to projects

All of your executive have contributed time and energy to DW to make these changes. I personally wanted to thank everyone for all of their time and commitment to the sport.

Several positions will be up for renewal this year - if you believe in the sport please consider becoming involved by becoming a member of one of the committees: Education, Show, Awards banquet or considering a board position.

Several will be open this year - newsletter, volunteers to mention a couple. DW executive terms usually run 2 years and we meet usually the first Thursday of the month about 11 times a year.

I also wanted to thank members for all your emails and ideas over the last 20 months - it has been great getting to know so many passionate horse people!

Pony Club Dressage As usual a bronze dressage show was held as part of the Spring Classic Pony Club Show held the last weekend in May. 70 rides between walk-trot and first level were judged over the two days by Dr. Brandy Catton - one of our two local recorded judges.

Manitoba Pony Club Dressage Championships will be held in conjunction with the MHJA Summer in the City Show at the Red River Ex site - the third weekend in August. Qualified riders would be eligible to attend the Canadian Pony Club Nationals out of province

This year Shannon Maclean and Megan Maclean will be competing at First Level in Kelowna, BC. Unlike regular dressage national or regional competitions, CPC nationals have riders attend and ride their tests on borrowed horses. It is a community commitment to host this type of competition.

Westman Dressage News Westman Dressage held their very successful EC Bronze Lemonade Daze Dressage Show for the second year in a row last month, at the excellent Keystone Centre facility. So many entries came from Saskatchewan and across Manitoba, WD had to remove some non-essential classes to fit in all the dressage tests! Results can be found at http://westmandressage.com

Manitoba has been experiencing extreme heat and humidity this summer and with it comes the necessity to manage your horse’s hydration and thermoregulation. Both crucial for your horse’s health and performance during training and shows.

It is important that your horse’s gut stays well hydrated at all times to minimize risk of colic, which can be quite common during hot summer months. An Equine gastrointestinal tract holds an average of 25 litres of liquid. Heat stress during exercise and transportation can amount to a loss of 20 litres of fluid an hour. No wonder proper hydration is of utmost importance!

Horses have a much harder time to get rid of excess bodily heat than humans do. If a horse’s normal temperature stands at 37 degrees Celsius, in high heat it can quickly rise up to a critical temperature of 41. Overheating happens when the body temperature exceeds 41 degrees, even if it is for only a brief time period. This results in cells malfunctioning, which can cause muscle damage and as such should be avoided at all costs.

What are the warning signs of heat stress?

• Panting• Rapid heart rate• Loss of appetite• Catatonia• Decrease desire to drink• Glazed eyes• Poor performance

What can you do to prevent overheating?

Keep an eye out for the telltale signs listed above. Every horse has a different threshold. Help your horse to get rid of the heat : hydration, hosing down, provide shade, install barn fans. If you suspect your horse is starting to show mild signs of overheating, do not work your horse or scratch if necessary.

To ensure proper hydration, supplement with electrolytes to encourage him to drink sufficient amounts of water. Do not suddenly introduce electrolytes during a show as your horse may refuse to drink. Accustom your horse to the taste by slowly adding small amounts of electrolyte either in his water or a ration over a period of time. You can find supplements that are flavoured and will please your horse’s palate. Do not exceed the recommended dosage as it can result in salt poisoning, which negatively affects brain and can result in seizures.

A variety of electrolyte supplements available at Wild West Country Lifestyle & Equine Wellness. Widest selection of equine performance feeds and supplements in Manitoba. One on one nutritional counseling with our friendly staff to help you figure out how to keep your equine at his best!

What is it like to have a Pro Grooming Job?

EcoLicious Equestrian & Professional Equine Grooms

EcoLicious Equestrian & Professional Equine GroomsIf a career as a pro equine groom is something you wish to pursue, joining their community is the best first step you can take.

This is a great question, with so many levels! Mainly, it’s a whole lot of responsibility, with not a whole lot of time in the spotlight. Grooming, by its very nature, is a behind the scenes job. You are there before dawn sometimes, and after sunset on many occasions. The barn and horses magically get cleaned several times a day. Multiple feedings are taken care of, and hay seems to stack itself. A perfect stranger, new to horses, might get the idea that it’s very little work! Ultimately, a Groom is responsible for many other things besides just stacking hay and sweeping the barn. The health and well being of the horse is top priority.

You are responsible for knowing each horse inside and out, top to bottom, front to back. And having that knowledge, you are responsible for noticing any and all changes in your horses. How they act, how they eat, how they poop. Upon noticing any change, you are responsible for carrying out the directions of your Employer, the Veterinarian, or the Farrier. You are also responsible for carrying out the “plan” of the day. What’s the riding plan? The turnout plan? The hand walking plan? Is the Veterinarian or Farrier coming? Hay or shavings delivery? (And don’t get me started on what to do if someone is early or late – kick in those multi-tasking tools!)

There are, of course, many other dimensions to the job description that don’t involve the horses directly. Taking care of the barn, tack, feed room, tack room, arenas, and turn outs also falls under your umbrella. It’s a long day with lots to do! Yes, having a Grooming job is tough and busy, it’s also very rewarding. There is nothing like watching your horse enter the gate, go down centerline, or have a clear round. There’s a bit of pride knowing that your horse is turned out beautifully because of you!

August 7, 2012, London, England – Canadian Olympic Team member for Dressage Ashley Holzer of Toronto, ON, finished 24th individually on Tuesday, August 7, at the 2012 London Olympic Games. A total of 50 athletes competed individually in the equestrian sport of Dressage at the Olympic equestrian venue of Greenwich Park.

Riding Breaking Dawn, Holzer earned a score of 71.317% to place 24th in the Grand Prix Special, the second individual qualifier held Tuesday, August 7. All seven international judges comprising the ground jury awarded Holzer scores of 70% or higher.

Holzer’s expressive test was highlighted by strong work in the tempi changes, canter tour, and passage, particularly the second passage after the walk. Unfortunately, Holzer had small errors in both canter pirouettes.

“It was an incredible ride,” said Holzer, 48, who was making her fourth Olympic appearance and was a member of Canada’s bronze medal team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. “He loves the crowd. You can’t get a busier arena, and this horse couldn’t care less. He goes the same way in there, the same way that he goes in the warm-up, and the same way that he goes at home.

“For a horse that hasn’t been doing Grand Prix for a year yet, I’m thrilled,” continued Holzer of Breaking Dawn, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by herself and P.J. Rizvi.

Tuesday’s event was also the Team Final for Dressage. Great Britain took the gold medal for the second consecutive day, having also won show jumping gold on Monday. With an average score of 79.979%, Great Britain’s Olympic Dressage Team prevailed over Germany, who took the silver with an average score of 78.216%. The Netherlands earned the bronze medal with 77.124%.

The Canadian Olympic Team for Dressage, comprised of Holzer riding Breaking Dawn, Jacqueline Brooks, 44, of Cedar Valley, ON, riding D Niro owned by Brookhaven Dressage, Inc., and David Marcus, 31, of Campbellville, ON, riding Capital owned by Deborah Miculinic, were eliminated on Thursday, August 2, following the elimination of Marcus.

The top 18 individual competitors will contest the individual medals in the Grand Prix Freestyle to music on Thursday, August 9. They do not carry their scores forward from earlier individual qualifying competition. The individual medals in Dressage will be the final equestrian sport medals to be awarded at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Canadian Olympic Team for Dressage is supported by Chef d’Equipe Gina Smith; Veterinarian Dr. Geoff Vernon; Technical Leader Markus Gribbe; Team Manager Christine Peters and Personal Athlete Coach Robert Dover. Team alternate is Diane Creech. Grooms include Lindsay Kellock (Holzer); Eleanor Anne McFee (Brooks); Alexandra Reid (Marcus); and Christine Bacher (Creech). Kerri McGregor is the Team Leader for the Canadian Olympic Team for Equestrian and Tina Collins is Assistant Team Leader.

“Ashley Holzer of Toronto, ON, riding Breaking Dawn finished 24th individually at the 2012 London Olympic Games.”

Wow! We did it!! This is the feeling I walked away with as July 13th came to a close. A positive, creative learning experience for participants was the goal, and thanks to Joan Adler and Lauren Layton-Bamford, Gerry and Irene Loewen and the staff at Pineridge Equine Park we delivered.

The following feedback was received from camp participants:

Both instructors were very personable and obviously interested and motivated to help the students improve They were easy to talk to, positive, encouraging and seemed to have good rapport with each other and with the students.

Both Lauren and Joan provided technical knowledge that I did not have in my current skill set, ie, they were able to add to and modify the knowledge I was starting with. I particularly appreciated the focus they brought to rider position and felt I improved this aspect of my riding a great deal.

The Balimo session with Joan also found additional weaknesses in my current physical technique and knowledge that I didn’t even know I had. Awareness is the first step towards improvement! Joan also provided practical exercises that will help to improve the required skills going forward.

Watching Lauren work on exercises with other students clarified certain exercises for me and allowed me to (successfully too!) experiment on my own with the same exercises myself at home on a different horse.

From my perspective, the format was great! I will admit the days were long in time, e.g. 7:30 a.m to 8 p.m. or later, but would I have wanted shorter days? NO WAY!!! I loved the intensity and immersion over the 3 days…it was like a riding “retreat” and how often do we get to focus solely on our riding for 3 whole days?? There was always something to do or learn, watch other lessons etc. And having a cool facility with meals available onsite was an additional benefit. Being able to eat as a group and interact with the other students was another benefit.

Both evening presentations were useful and down to earth. I appreciated having the background information on the Balimo program and Lauren’s discussion the next night simplified the concepts required for many dressage exercises.

And That’s A Wrap!A wrap up of Camp 2012

All I can say is that I’ll be a repeat camp goer if trailering Sage is possible.

As a first-time camper I had no expectations to be met. But I have to say, personally, I think this past camp has raised the bar. The facilities, management, instructors and food were all great. I’m impressed that the instructors were able to gear their lessons from the very beginner rider such as myself to skilled riders

Early Bird Winners from the registration draw were Suzanne Regnier-Tront (50% rebate of tuition), Carolyne Scramstad (2013 membership), and Nachelle Forde (t-shirt & cap).

As camp organizer, my thanks goes to Pineridge Equine Park - Gerry and Irene Loewen, Joan Adler, Lauren Layton-Bamford, Linda Ridley (Thursday evening lecture), all Dressage Winnipeg board members, Maura Leahy and Sandra Hobday (billeting the instructors), and all camp participants for creating the wonderful experience that Camp 2012 was!
