From the desk of the Grand KnightBrothers

After being computer-less for almost three weeks,I am happy to report that I have come out of the dark ages (with the exception of my flip phone) to cyber-space. Appreciate all the understanding ofmy dilemma.

Our Council is very fortunate in the ability to provide so much to those in need here in the

community and beyond, but my monthly reminder is that it takes “many hands to make light work” . To those who always answer the call for help, I really don’t know what I could do without you. Your never-ending support in projects, etc. makes our Council outstanding.

I pray that those of you who haven’t been to a meeting in a while, consider attending and adding your name to the list of helpers, even if only for one event. This will allow the newer members to meet you and allow you to become aware of the love and support we have to offer everyone.

Some upcoming events we hope to facilitate in the near future include a root beer float party for Salem-Haven and Salem Woods Assisted Living facility. Come see the joy and happiness the root beer floats bring to those living in these facilities, and as always invite your spouses to join us.

We are also planning to have an Italian Supper in early November.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18thcentury but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937. It falls on October 9, this year.

Treasurer's Report: Bob FournierBob reported on our finances. Our investment account “made” $843. Report accepted as read.

Financial Secretary's Report: Charlie WalshEleven checks written. Membership total 239 (due to 1 transfer out) Report accepted as read.

Committee Reports – Mike Banks conducting:

Membership Committee – Dave Thompson I need someone to volunteer to become themembership chairman. The chairman does not recruit every new candidate! He does match newcandidates recruited by members of the council with degree team schedules in other councils. Thework averages about 5 hours time per month. You can talk with past membership chairmen BillRichards or Paul St.Amand for all the details. There are several older brothers who are ready tohelp. You will not be alone. This role keeps the life blood of the council flowing. Will YOUvolunteer?

Culture for LifeNo report tonight, as Dennis had a prior commitment. Upcoming events were reported by DD Bill Richards later in the meeting.

Veterans Activities – Rico CasalettoThe AM-Vets donated a flag for the Council. The 9/11 Memorial will be at the Mall at Rockingham Park onTuesday September 19th opening at 9:00AM running thruSaturday September 23rd at 2:30PM.Veterans Breakfast on Friday November 3rd at the WoodburySchool at 7:45AM.

Bingo – Ron Bourque: Bingo is proceeding at a record pace. With just a “normal”finish for the remainder of the year, this will be the best gainever. Thanks to the team and Almighty God for granting us thisbounty that we can donate to our charities.

Texas Hold-em – Larry Belair: Progress is being made but waiting for Town Planing Board to approve changes. An optimistic October start at the Grand China is planned.

Newsletter – Paul St.AmandSince the newsletter editor is spending a lot of time down East with his Maine wife (Does that mean he has a “spare wife”? -ed) he often cannot attend council activities as frequently as in the past. He requests that folks submit articles to him for print in the newsletter. Pictures are

great, too. (Does anything happen at the 4th degree? We could use a news update. Have there been ANY calls to muster in the last six months worthy of a few lines of print and a photo?) But hey, this is a call not just to the 4 th degree... any newsworthy item can get print space! A new blood drive photo? A bingo photo of our volunteers? Send any item to the editor at the newsletter link at our web site.

Coats for KidsPaul St Amand will be ordering the coats this month and they should be arriving in October at the school gym.

Blood Drive – Butch KealeyThe last Blood Drive produced 77 pints of blood. The next Blood Drive is Thursday September 14th. 3

Rico presents flag to Dave.

Corporation Update: - Mike PetrilliThe Council Building has been pressure washed and Saturday September 16th volunteers are needed to paint the building. Thanks to Larry Belair and George Masciarelli who did the pressure washing.

Don Simmons announced that he is retiring as the corporation treasurer, he hopes by year end, because of his upcoming travel time conflicts. The duties are not overwhelming, but do require the timely paying of bills and record keeping, This could be an excellent item on a resume for someone! He will be very happy and eager to train his replacement! Contact him or Mike Petrilli (corporation president) directly.

Old BusinessThe notice of motion for school supplies for St. Joseph's School was removed from the table and a motion was made for $2,000.00 for school supplies for St. Joseph's School. Motion was approved and accepted unanimously.

New Business• Tom Campbell requested $100.00 for a disabled vet to help in shipping cost to replace damaged items. Other

councils will also be contributing.• Don Simmons requested $500.00 for a Cub Scout Camping Event and $250.00 for the school gym/hall rental fee

for the Pinewood Derby. Accepted and Approved.

• A motion from the floor by Alan Phair for $2,200.00 for the LED lights at MQP. Accepted and Approved. (To be taken from the approved church capital repairs budget line item.)

• Approval to waive hall rental fee for Cub Scout Blue and Gold dinner at future date.

Notice of Motion – motion raised and tabled.Notice of Motion is given here, to be considered at our October 11, 2017 Regular Meeting of the following Donations:

• $25,000 to the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus Disaster Relief Fund to assist those affected by the two large hurricanes that struck Texas, Florida, and the US Caribbean territories.

• $25000 to Catholic Charities USA, for their Disaster Relief Fund, for the same effort in Texas, Florida and the US Caribbean territories.

• $2500 as a direct tuition grant to the St Joseph Regional Catholic School substitute teacher/janitor Tom Maloney. A letter of recommendation from SJRCS Principal Mary Croteau is provided.

• $1700 for a Memorial Bench in the Family Park of the Boscawen Veteran’s Cemetery, as requested by Rico Casaletto and the AMVETS.

• $1000 through Trustees for Parish-wide trip/retreat to the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro MA for Christmas event.

This is a total of $55,200

Additional information on items in this Notice of Motion:

From Rico Casaletto: The Memorial Bench cost is the maximum and includes all lettering and the KofC logo. There are several other benches already at the Family Park, including those from Assembly 627 (Concord-Suncook), Assembly 638 (Franklin), Council 2170 (Franklin) an Council 12147 (Franklin.) The Salem AMVETS and American Legion are also approving funds for benches. If approved by our council, we would obtain permission from the Director of the cemetery prior to any expenditures.

From Dave Thompson :The bus trip to LaSalette in Attleboro is a parish wide trip not just for the employees.Lorraine's reasoning for this request is to bring back some community and fellowship as we haven't had togetherness since the loss of the picnic and no suppers etc. Lasalette has an annual light show from end of November until New Year's where attendees can spend time exploring the grounds, attend Mass, view the outstanding creche display. The $1000 pays for the bus, and those attending also will pay a nominal fee towards bus drivers tip anddonation to the shrine. 4

Officer Installation – part ONE Larry Belair reportingThe installation of our Council officers was held at St. Joseph's Parish on Sunday, August 20th, following the 11:00 AM mass, with District Deputy Bill Richards and CouncilChaplain Fr. Tom Frink presiding.

Although lightly attended on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the ceremony was, nonetheless, impressively done and becomes part of our Council's rich history. A light lunch was served at the Bishop Peterson Hall following the ceremonies.

(Ed. note: There was a time when the installation of our officers was a well attended event. Whether it is the time, the day or the level of interest, the attendance this year reached an all time low, including the fact that only 5 of the 12 elected officers were on hand to receive their jewels of office. We can do better. We should be able to show more support for those willing to devote the time needed to lead our Council. Larry Belair, PGK 2000; and photographer)

Back to School at St. Joseph Regional Catholic School -Paul St.Amand reportingBefore the council meeting on Wednesday, September 13, the principal Mary Croteau, and the marketing consultant Christine Latino, gave us a presentation and tour of the school. Also on hand were Marilyn Byron, kindergarten teacher, and the co-head of the PTA, Jennifer Balzano along with her two girls. This was arranged by Gene Bryant, whois our council representative on the school board. A slide show tells of the school's mission and goals and their improvements in facilities and increasing enrollment. And our council was thanked profusely for our support. We were each given a “Thank you” letter written by the students. About 20 Knights attended this presentation. Cookies and juices were served, just like in kindergarten! Larry said, “I thank you for giving us such a better understanding of the progress of the school. I saw a “show of hands” at a Mass I attended in Florida for all those who had at least a partial Catholic education, and fully three fourths of the people raised their hands. Your efforts guide people to continue to remain faithful to the Church as they grow. ... And by the way, the last time I was in a classroom this late at night, it was called detention!” (Thanks to Mike Banks who took the photos. ed)

5th Wednesday RosaryAt the conclusion of the Wednesday, August 30 evening Mass, Dave Thompson led the congregation in recitation of the rosary. There were about 20 people attending. After the rosary, we gathered for light refreshments in the church family room. The next 5th Wednesday, and last of this year, will be November 29. All are encouraged to attend and pray for the intentions of our Pope and for World Peace. (no picture available - ed)

More table and chairsDave Thompson and the Knights were asked to help out with setting up Julie Hall for parish sponsored farmers' market “thingie.” Dave asked for volunteers to show up at 11:00AM on Friday, Sep;t 15. Paul St.Amand and Norm Comeau showed up at 11:00AM. Already present were Dave Thompson, Chanel Simard, Don Simmons, and Paul Lavoie, who all showed up according to “Chanel Time.” The job was almost done by the time Paul and Norm showed up; nevertheless, they also received the full-day's wages, same as those who toiled from early morning. (no pictures available - ed)

A Thank You letter from one of our Scholarship Recipients...August 26, 2017Hello Mr. Stafford,I would like to thank you, as well as the entirety of the Salem Knights of Columbus for the scholarship which I was lucky enough to receive; for which I am very grateful. The scholarship will help me very much in decreasing the large amount ofloans involved in University, especially for a student that is living on campus. I have two siblings: my twin brother, Calum, and my younger sister Dale who starts school at University of Hartford this fall. My brother is spending his semester in Budapest this fall as I did Madrid this past spring, which has been a wonderful opportunity that higher education has subjected me to. As I would like for my siblings to enjoy the same blessings as I have received, I thought you would like to know that I have decided to split the money evenly between us. So in fact, we all thank you and are very appreciative of your kind donation towards the bettering of ourselves.Sincerely, Tristan Beaulieu 8

What do you know about Jesus?... (Just for laughs)There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:

1. He called everyone brother . 2. He liked Gospel . 3. He didn't get a fair trial .

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish: 1. He went into His Father's business . 2. He lived at home until he was 33 . 3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin, and his Mother was sure He was God .

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian: 1. He talked with His hands . 2. He had wine with His meals . 3. He used olive oil .

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian: 1. He never cut His hair . 2. He walked around barefoot all the time . 3. He started a new religion.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was an American Indian: 1. He was at peace with nature . 2. He ate a lot of fish . 3. He talked about the Great Spirit .

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish: 1. He never got married. 2. He was always telling stories. 3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman: 1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food . 2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it . 3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do.

Can I please get an Amen!!!

“You may be the new Grand Knight, but you still have to cook at home.”
