From the Desk of the Grand Knight:Brothers,
If you sponsor a candidate, your work doesn't end when he makes his first degree. Follow your new knight through the degrees. It means a lot to the new member that you “show up” and support him. Equally important, get him involved in the activities of the council. Break the ice for him, personally invite him to join in. He might be intimidated watching the meetings and reluctant to “barge in.” In a GK meeting, I heard the expression, “A new member is like a bright, shiny apple on a tree. If you don't pick the apple, it will rot on the vine and fall to the ground.” Don't ignore your new member and let him “fall out” of the council.
Read the December issue of “Columbia” and in particular, read the Supreme Knight's article (pp 3-6) on a new KofC initiative, Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish”. This initiative will change some of our programs and the ways Knights deal with our parish.
This December, there are MANY ways for you to volunteer and help out our parish and community. Read this newsletter and make note of ways to help . Give the gift of your time and talents! Make a difference.

7:30PM: GK Paul St.Amand opened the meeting at 7:30PM. There were 35 attending; the meeting concluded at 9:20PM. All officers present except for Advocate and inside guard.November minutes were read and a motion passed to accept as read.
CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. Tom on Joy of the Gospel.7:33PM: Jesus founded Catholic Church on aperson (himself), cannot duplicate a person.Where you find the center of the truth, look forthe one person that is in the line of Peter. ABook can be duplicated, we’re up to 30,000denominations. Joy of Gospel – Pope says it isthe program for the church, our gift is to use theJoy of the Gospel to keep us aligned andmoving forward in the right direction. Jesus said“I came that you might have fullest life” youhave not asked for anything in my name “ask forit” so that your joy may be complete. Spreadingthe Joy of the Gospel requires people to beevangelized i.e. happy and joyful, then spreadthe word of the Joy of the Gospel.

Ron D – mentioned Birthright initiative using a billboard by Nashua council. On Feb13th, the Annual Birthright Dinner will be held in Allenstown, NH. (See page 9)Looking for non-perishable items collected and delivered to quarterly meeting fromeach council, presented in laundry baskets. Distributed to pregnancy centersthroughout the State. Pregnancy centers are on the front line preventing abortion.Thank the council for the Ultrasound Machine for Pathway’s. Texas Hold-Em' – Larry Belair8:18PM: 10th and final night for 2015 was last month. Total for 2015 is $11,500 over budgeted forecast to the better. With only 8 dates total next year revenue expected to dropThanks to Al Hamel for help while Larry was away.
Bike Ped Corridor Update – Larry BelairThe Bids are in for the construction needed. The good news is Bids in, under budget. Break ground in May, on trail in September.
Blood Drive – Ken Akerley: Next drive is set for Jan 21st 1-7PM. Blood collected down last month – 46 pints out of 55 presenters. Thanks to Butch for cooking 33

Children’s Christmas Party – Tom CampbellJose will be handling the pizza, cake, and entertainment. We are in goodshape. Now all we need is kids to show up! Santa WILL be there.
Info for new members:... This party is open to any child who wants to meetSanta. No cost to you, but each parent is to bring a wrapped toy of modestcost ($10-$20) for their own child, with the child's name on the gift. Santa willread the name, and hand out the gift. Party starts at 1:00PM and ends around3:00PM.The party is Sunday, December 20, 1:00PM
Christmas Toy Distribution – Alan PhairFrom Alan Phair: (This is a listing of what remains in the schedule)
2. Our toy distribution center will again be at 356 South Broadway in the plaza where Harbor Freight Tools is. The distribution nights will be on Tuesday December 15th and Thursday Dec 17th, starting at 6:00PM. We need a lot ofpeople to help recipients pick out toys so if you and/or your wife or any adult canmake it on a certain day or both, please let me know. As in the past, I will do my best to schedule people based on their availability and the needs of the fund. Email me on which day(s) you can help. Usually, we are done by nine o'clock.. If you have never done this before, please show up at 5:30 so we can show you the ropes.
I will be in contact with people via email with any updates. This is a very busy season for all of us, but this is such a worthy cause, and we all know how warm
we feel after helping out that it is well worth our efforts. This is the Salem Christmas Funds 40th year. Without the Knights jumping in when asked back in 2001, the program would most likely not be in existence today. As many of you know, I started my new job as Town Administrator in Atkinson on Tuesday Nov 17th so my day time availability will be limited, which means I am going to need more help than ever to get all this done.

Finally, and even more important, if you find yourself in a situation where you need help or you know a family that needs assistance, please let me know. Arrangements can be made for private toy pickups for example so that no one will know other than myself. I can guarantee you won’t be the first nor the last to need assistance. Our goal has always been to never let a family go without necessary food, clothing, or children without toys under the tree.

Baskets made for each school in town – Catholic and Public.Food drive – 7000 cans collected – record year.Scout charter coming up – moving from KofC to Parish, per Supreme's guidelines. (Council are not to be charter holder for scouts, but should continue to support scouting efforts. Paul StA and Don met with Scout leaders on Friday, December 11, to explain. Don also talked with Fr. Tom, who indicated he will sign the charter for 2016. - ed)

Corporation – Don Gagne: New light for flag pole, pay attention to ice dams this winter, Linehan set up for plowing, stumps to be ground down shortly, new ice machine. Looking for new members to install a base under the shed in the spring, patch up until then.
Alter Server Recognition – Mark Alfono: Framed recognition and $20 gift I-tunes gift card for about 25 Alter Servers. Costs to be submitted to trustees. Committee is Mark Alfano and Richard Gomez.
Old Business: $1000.00 for Honduran Mission – motion to take off the table. Eventually this fund would be added to 2016 budget. Amendment by Dave Thompson to reduce to $500 for Honduran Mission, which is state-wide, and give $500 to Mexico Mission of our Parish. Amendment was debated but did not carry. Main motion voted and passed by 2/3 majority.

Santa Maria Float / Boat / Trailer – Skip Troisi8:55PM. Start committee to repair float. Current condition is unsafe, not fit for scout nor Knight.Will provide quotes which will be submitted to trustees – voted at future council meeting.Larry suggested to reach out to builder in Plaistow for quote
Mike Banks can obtain a new 2” ball and have trailer brakes repaired when the time is right.
District Deputy Report – Bill Richards (as District Warden)9:03PM New Fund Raising Program – Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson. Appeal to State KofC and all councils -for funds from 4442 in the near future. Goal is to build new Gym and Art Center. The parents of the kids are the only ones doing the fund raising. January time frame to discuss if 4442 can provide financial support. Projected costs $8.5M. The Budget Committee will look at this first and report to the council in the January meeting. Some information received.
PMA is a private school totally supported by parents who run fund raisers. Current population is 510 in grades K through 8. There are 3 students from Salem; 2 families out of 356.
Tuition accounts for 75% of the yearly expenses; tuition is about $5,500 per year. Current capital campaign is first major one in 200 years of nun's order; campaign has been on for past 8 years. About $1.5M are in savings, funds needed are $7M. $1.6M in secured pledges already. 17% staff and families
contributing to date. Hope to break ground in spring, 2016, completion in 2017.
GOOD OF THE ORDER announcementsHelp Wanted: The Parish set-up folks have asked our help to prepare the school auditorium for the Christmas Eve Mass. The time is 2:00PM on Wednesday, Dec 23. If you have an hour or two, meet at the gym. We don't have to move tables, just chairs.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Local cable channel 17 will air the documentary on Friday Dec. 18 at 5:30 PM and Saturday Dec 19 at 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. This Knights funded documentary was originally broadcast prior to the feast day of Dec 12; however, it is being re-broadcast on our local public access TV-17.
Knight of the Month(s)October KOM – To Mark Bunnell, for taking on the Soccer Kick Challenge as a new member. And also helping out with several council activities.
November KOM to Tom Campbell, for volunteering to be the chairman and efficiently getting all the duties needed to be done. Tom was chairman for the Christmas Parade, Manger Set-up/Take down, and Children's Christmas Party. Thankyou, Tom, for making my GK's job easier!

We thank Bill for his two years of service as our Grand Knight, plus all the other activities he either led or participated in. Bill is always ready to take onnew challenges; he is now the District Warden, and will soon accept the role of District Deputy. (Watch out, Carl Anderson - ed)
Attendance Drawing No one had the official roster, so we couldn't draw numbers in November. So, tonight we drew a namefor $40. George Camire was not present. The prizewas now raised to $50, and after drawing 11 names, we got a winner on the 12th name, Chanel Simard being present to get the prize. January, the prize resets to $10.
Closing Prayer was done at 9:20PM by Fr. Tom.
Hall Rental PolicyFor hall rental call George Masciarelli at 603-893-3035. Or, go to the council web site and contact him through email. George will match your needs with available dates and send you a rental agreement for your signature and deposit. You must be a member of Council 4442 and/or Assembly 0641 to rent the Hall and, you must remain at the hall during the rental period.Full details of fees and policies are available on the Web Site: Council Hall Rental.
George can also arrange for members to get a key to the council home.
Corporation By-Laws and ElectionThe draft updated By-Laws will be available at the Council Web Site (email notice will be sent). Hard copies will be available in the hall in the upper area. The prior issue was reviewed and updated by the members at the Tuesday, Dec 1 meeting. This issue will be approved and signed at the Jan 5 meeting. If there are any concerns with this Draft copy, please contact Don Gagne, the Corporation President.
The Election of Directors for the Corporation will be on Tuesday, January 26, at 7:00PM. All members of the council arealso members of the corporation and may run for any office.

Manger Set-up at St. Joseph ChurchOn Sunday, Nov 22, a heartyband of six apprentice carpentersworked to set up the Manger atSt. Joseph Church. Under thewatchful eye of Maryann Murack,union steward, and the directionof master carpenter Jim Frahm,the job was done on time andunder budget.
But looking ahead, there werecalls at the December meeting to get a new structure. Proposals at the council ranged from a Plexiglas enclosure like thatat MQP, to a pre-fab, inflatable barn, to a three story granite edifice tied into the Tuscan Kitchen redevelopment plan. The GK wisely tabled the discussion to the spring. (How come we can't get Jim Frahm into the Knights? - ed)

Christmas Parade- Nov 29The good ship Santa Marie was on display at the Salem Christmas Parade. There were ten Sir Knights marching in regalia, three taking a cruise ride, Mike Banks towing the float, four knights riding in cars and trucks, (and 48 people as support staff at the hall, eating and snacking after we marched by. -ed) Thanks go to Dave Thompson for his marvelous hot soup and sandwiches, and to Wayne Griffin, Frank Saglime, Bill McCarthy, and Rick Dube who marched with the Sir Knights of our council.

Christmas Party“What a party!” A big THANK YOU to Wil and Tina (a.k.a. “Lucy”) Boutin, who put together a great Christmas party at the hall on Saturday night. The food was excellent. (Lenzi's Catering, family style,all-you-can-eat, soup, salad, ham, beef, potato, broccoli, strawberry shortcake.) Vocalist / DJ Gino DiMaio had the joint dancing away. Happy birthday to George Spates and Bill Fergueson. Fr. John even made a trip over from the Holy Land for a surprise visit.
It was Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday, so there was a common theme to the music. We all had fun, and we all “did it my way.”
Birthright Dinner Feb 13, 2016 – Paul St.Amand)The 9th Annual Birthright Dinner will be Saturday, Feb 13, in Allenstown, NH, about 40 minutes from our Hall. The featuredspeaker will be Bishop Libasci. (He will also be saying the 4:00PM Mass.). The banquet with Cranberry Chicken w/ Garlic mashed potatoes as the main course is only $15/pp. The deadline for reservations is Feb 5. You can contact me and I will gather up names and we can sit together as a council. I will collect names, and also your checks or cash. (Checks to “KofC Council 4442”) and get one ticket order from State. Or you can contact Ed McCann directly for tickets.
Baskets for Pregnancy Care Centers – Paul St.AmandAt the State Quarterly meeting, a collection of baby items will be gathered to distribute to 15 pregnancy care centers in NH. Each council is asked to collect items. I will buy a laundry basket (the recommended “bin” for packing, as the basket itself is a gift.) The list below is from the weekly NH KofC update. I will collect your items at the Jan 13 meeting.

Is someone you know looking to earn extra money?Our Bingo managers, Lou Stella and Paul Simard, are looking to train oneor two qualified people to learn the management side of Bingo. Lou andPaul are looking to share the load that our Council's biggest fund raisingeffort demands. Lou, in particular, is looking to train his eventualreplacement so that he and Maryann can enjoy their retirement more.
Perhaps you’re not ready to take on a job that requires every Wednesday or Friday night throughout the year. But, how about someone close to
you, like a son or daughter, or your wife? Can a part time job and its pay make a differenceto someone in your family? Do you know a man who is qualified to join the Knights and might bewilling to learn more about Bingo management?
The first, and most important, trait that you must bring to the job is honesty. Everything else can be learned if you are someone who has good math skills, is a good ‘people person’, and can supervise a team with diplomacy and understanding. There are reports to be filed and rules to be followed, but you’ll be trained by the best. Paul and Lou are not going anywhere; they will be there to help you get settled into the position. At present, the Bingo events are held over in Hudson, about 15 miles from Salem, so you’ll need a car or a dependable ride. It’s not a volunteer job. It’s a serious commitment…and you get paid to do it. So ask around your family. Call Lou Stella at 978-683-6313. He’ll answer all of your questions, and he’ll explain the whole process for you.

Understanding Engineers
A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning behind a particularly slow group of golfers.
The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"
The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"
The priest said, "Here comes the greens-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello George, What's wrong with them?”
The greens-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free!"
The group fell silent for a moment.
The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight."
The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if here's anything she can dofor them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"
