From the desk of the Grand Knight: Brothers, Thank you for the honor of serving as Grand Knight for this coming year. With the continued support of all our members, I know we will have a successful year. Bill Richards, our immediate past Grand Knight, did an outstanding job for the council for the past two years. He has set a high bar, he will be a tough act to follow! The New GK has a chance to do new things. Our council works well; we do great things. If we simply repeat what we have done in the past, we would have again a successful year. I want to suggest a few things and, I hope, improve on the past. Time will tell if any changes are successful or not. I ask for your support. Let's face it. We are old guys. And we usually recruit our friends, who are old guys. We need to attract young men. So, this year, I would like to start or re-start some projects that could attract younger candidates. Some activities would be soccer kick and free throw competitions, an altar server recognition program; maybe we can expand the Children's Christmas Party to invite all members of the parish. These events would all have a child's parents attending; these would be an opportunity to let A young dad witness what we do; maybe the mom will push him into the Knights! In this edition of the newsletter, I have included a list of programs and “chairman” of our council that were reported on in the past year. (I am probably missing missing some; let me know what I miss!) I ask each chairman to review their program and consider what changes, if any, could be done to improve their program. (page 10) I have also added some new programs to the list. You will see that there are vacant positions. I ask for volunteers to step forward to be “the point man,” the chairman, for each program. If you would like to volunteer to head up one of these programs, please let me know. You certainly don't have to do all the work; grab some buddies to help you out. I just need someone for each program who will see to it's successful completion. My experience is that no one wants to be “in charge,” but everyone will help out. So if you feel called to be “in charge” for some particular program, please step up. You will find that many of your Brother Knights will be glad to answer your call for help. Bill Richards, our immediate past Grand Knight, did an outstanding job for the council for the past two years. He has set a high bar, he will be a tough act to follow!

  • Council Meeting Notes from July 8UNOFFICIAL(There will be some changes in the style and content of thenewsletter. I found that banging the gavel as GK while taking notes as editor don't work. Photographs at tonight's meeting were taken by Worthy Photographer, Joe Stafford, PGK. Thank, Joe! I have also cut and pasted from Mike Bank's electronic version of the minutes. Lastly, some articles weremailed in by folks after the meeting and I've added them into the newsletter. So if you don't remember seeing Larry Belair at the meeting, you aren't wrong.... but I do have a report from him. - ed)

7:30PM: GK Paul St. Amand opened the meeting with our prayers and pledge and opening comments. We welcomed Wayne Griffin, newly-elected Worthy State Deputy, to our council hall tonight. The meeting was closed at 8:59PM; 34 members attended.7:33PM: Mike Banks, newly elected recorder, read the minutes, which were approved as read.

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. JohnWhat advice to give to the Knights in the area of the ‘growth’? What can be done better? Stress to pray more, share with Christ, need for vocations, and it’s the year of the consecrated life. Never be afraid to pray with young children. We can do better to support pro-life, mentioned article about euthanasia in Belgium – Catholic effort successfully blocked a bill to approve. Invite others to come to church with us, and attend church more frequently. Fr. John appreciates being a Knight, appreciates the Knights charity, live as Christian gentlemen, and bring Christ to others through good works, bond of fellowship.

On July 25, there will be a 2nd and 3rd degree exemplification given, on the same day, at the Sacred Heart School, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia, NH. The 2nd degree is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am and the 3rd degree exemplification will follow beginning at 12:30 pm. There will also be a lunch served between the exemplifications, at a cost of $7.00. If anyone is interested in attending the exemplifications please confirm your intentions with Bill not later than July 19, 2015. We have two candidates who will be going. And there is always room for spectators. Our intentions for those who wish to attend is to car pool from the council hall departing at approximately 7:00 am, and weshould be back in Salem by approximately 6:00 pm, in time for Fr. John's celebration.

Bingo – Ron Bourque8:26PM: The Thursday Night $64K “cover all” prize STILL has not been won. Our profit for our two days was excellent. Bingo is bringing in the money we need to give away in our charities. Thank you to all the Bingo crew!

Note on Bingo – Larry BelairI want to pass along a request from Lou Stella, our faithful Bingo manager. Lou and PaulSimard do our Bingos on Wed and Fri nights in Hudson. They need additional workers to keepthings moving at Bingo. Can you help / Even part-time?

As we all know, Bingo provides our Council with the lion's share of our income. Without that,we would have to drastically reduce our charitable works. If you would like to work at Bingo(workers are paid a modest stipend.) Please contact Lou Stella or Paul Simard at their emails. (

  • Relay for Life: Mike Banks8:16PM. Relay for Life - $6,978 raised total, Pauline Gorgol and daughter Pamela Gorgol raised $1,008 for this year’s effort. Looking to change fund raising and resources for next year – will chair sub-committee to discuss 2016 plans. (See report and photos below. -ed)

College Scholarship Program – Joe Stafford8:35PM Scholarship - Applications are now closed. We have 16 scholarships awards confirmed to provide $500.00 each. We have received 27 scholarship applications. Two need College/University documentation (Sarah Richards and Samantha Smith). I have received two phone calls, one from Butch Kealey and the other from Ken Akerley on June 30th, stating their applications will be late due to getting the documentation needed from their grandchildren. That's fine. As you know, one Brother might have ten family members applying; but only one family member per Brother

    could get an award.

The Family Day Picnic, - Joe StaffordThe picnic, on our council grounds, is open to all Knights and their family, and will be on July 26, with food at about 12:30PM. Everyone is invited to come, eat, have a good time. The college drawing will be held then. (Applicants do not have to be present to receive an award.) I have acquired the services of Tilly Lilly the Clown (Mary Downing), who will perform her "New" show in the afternoon of the picnic. (Joe requested and received $500 for food for the picnic and $150for just clowning around. - approved - ed)

Tents, tables, and chairs: On Saturday, July 25, we will set up the tents, starting at 8:00AM. After the tents are up, we are requested to set up tables and chairs in St. Joe's school gym for Fr. John's celebration. Either that Saturday night after the event, or most likely Sunday AM after 9:00AM, we need to move the chairs and tables to our picnic site.

KofC State Charity Raffle Tickets: Mike Petrilli8:21PM. Mike said that the ticket give away is doing very well, exceeding last year's good results (Our council was 2nd place statewide. -ed). The winning tickets will be drawn at the state ball in the fall. Returned all stubs to Mike by Aug 31.

Old Business:8:43PM: No old business was brought up.

  • Summer Baseball Fun! George MasciarelliFrom George and Alan Phair: It was a great game won by theFisher Cats thanks to a great play by the center-fielder to end thegame. Fisher Cats beat the Sea Dogs 6 to 4. The fireworks at theend were worth the price of admission. The weather was perfect.

Alan provided the photos. (We had retired priests and heath aidsattend as our guests. When Ron Bourque requested their names,

he was told that the Diocese insists that no photographs nor names of anyone appear inour newsletter. Hence the photo shop! -ed)

From Ron: Our Bishop Peterson Council was able to host three retired priests, a deacon and some of the staff at the Bishop Peterson Home at our annual night at the Fisher Cats game. Everyone had a great time. They were so thankful you’d think we had taken them to the World Series. One of the nurses and his family were selected to kick off the fireworks display; the kids, so well brought up, got a great kick out of that. They asked us to convey their heartfelt thanks to our Council.

Tootsie Roll Drive: – Final Report – Gene BryantBrothers, Family and Friends,

Thank you all for the tremendous time and effort that so many people put into our most successful Tootsie Roll Drive ever!Once again we had all the right stores, a huge turnout of help, and great June weather! All this effort, and all this money, is for the community that supports intellectually disabled kids and adults – All this money stays in New Hampshire, and most goes to groups in the Salem area.

Here are the stats:* More than 110 people worked over 100 shifts at 12 stores to raise $12,943.73, our official gross total.* The Council covered our food expenses and rounded the amount to be sent to the State Council to $13,000!* Many people worked more than one shift, and the amazing Bill Silvestri worked all weekend to raise over $1000 on his own!* We shake our head in amazement at the effort of "Ski" and Kim Loughlin who collected over $1000 in five shifts!* Our friends at Play Among the Stars worked over 30 shifts -- and will benefit with a substantial share of the proceeds.* We want to thank Cub Scout Pack 4442, sponsored by our Council, for their participation -- they looked great in their uniforms!

Here is a list of the groups that share in the distribution of this money:7

    All great and worthy causes!

Thank you so much to the "accounting crew" that gives up their weekend for this event; Jan and Alan Phair, Paul St Amand, and Ken and Peg Akerley.

And a round of applause for the new Tootsie Roll Chairman, Peter Klecan, who dived into this project with a great effort and good humor. I certify he is now well-trained and ready for the challenge of the 2016 Tootsie Roll Drive. For acceptingthat role he has my gratitude and best wishes!

Mark your calendars for the weekend of June 3-4-5, 2016 now, you don't want to miss the fun!

Thanks again to all who helped make this such a good time, and so successful. This is the most visible activity for our Council in this community, and one of the most worthy projects I have ever been associated with. I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had to participate in this effort over all these years.

Notices of Motion:These Motions will be considered at the next regular meeting, on August 12, 2013. Each Motion will be brought from the table and discussion would follow before a vote is called. Brothers with questions are encouraged to contact the proposers of the motions prior to the meeting; doing so will speed the vote process at the meeting.

Larry Belair: For $2,500 to go to the Salem Bike Path – Pedestrian Corridor, a.k.a. “Rail Trail.” This money will be invested in our own town for the benefit of people of all ages in our community. Many organizations in town have already contributed. Also, any money the Knights contribute will be a 300% return because of matching funds by state and federal grants. Brother Belair will speak to this motion at the August meeting. Larry can be contacted for more info by phone or email - 603-898-4009 - [email protected]

Gene Bryant: For several grants and donations totaling $57,530. All members with questions or comments on one or more of these articles are encouraged to contact me by phone or email. Gene Bryant -- 603-475-9103 -- [email protected]

Articles1) $25,000 for support of next new unit of permanent housing for a formerly homeless family, a program of -- Isaiah 58 New Hampshire, C/O Rev David Yasenka, Salem NH. This program rehabilitates used mobile homes, sites them in local mobile home communities, and assists the family in acquiring ownership in this housing unit. The organizations first unit isfinished and occupied, and our donation would begin the process for the next home.

    2) $25,000, committed in our budget at $5000 per year over the next five years, as our Council’s participation in a proposed capital campaign for St Joseph’s Regional Catholic School. This support is a follow up to our $25,000 donation last year towards a “turn around” project that brought in a professional consulting company (Catholic Schools Management) to facilitate a strategic plan for the school.

    3) $5030 for Center for Life Management of Derry, for three needed programs/equipment:a. $1250 for sports equipment and supplies for their InShape program, for the Children’s Clinical Services department.b. $1280 for therapy games and related supplies for the same department.c. $2500 (not to exceed) to replace small open trailer used to help clients with moving of family household belongings.

    4) $2500 donation to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, Amman Office, in honor of our Pastor and Chaplain, Father John Michalowski. This organization is a Papal Agency working with refugees from Syria and Iraq, driven from their homes by Muslim extremists because of their Christian religion. We often talk about religious freedom under threat here in the US, but these people are being martyred, or expelled from villages their families have called home for centuries.

Our program of donations and grants would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the many members and family who work at our Wednesday and Friday Bingo operation in Hudson, and the volunteers who work the many nights of Charity Poker at Rockingham Park.

  • Programs and Chairman – GK Paul St.AmandHere is the list of programs that I know about. Let me know if there are others. If I forgot your Program, my apologies. I ask each existing chairman to think back about the program he and his team conducted this past year. What went well? What could be improved? Is it time for something different? I also ask for volunteers to “fill in” the programs that have no chairman that I know of. Remember, the chairman does NOT do the job by himself; he gets other volunteers to do the work with him! Being a chairman is an excellent way to get to know more of your brothers in the council. And, are there programs we should start that are not listed here??? We can do new things!
